Process Improvement Services

Jacobs Australia (JA) has teamed with The Process Company

(headquartered in Springfield, USA and delivering services worldwide) to
create a formidable process improvement service for the Australian
market. The Process Company is an SEI Transition Partner that is
authorised to deliver CMMI training, CMMI SCAMPI Assessments, CMM
training and CBA IPI assessments and their Authorised Lead Appraisers
have conducted over 235 appraisals. JA can help organisations gain insight into their
process capability or organisational maturity by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of
current processes relative to the selected reference model (CMMI®). JA can provide the full
range of CMMI appraisal services using our experienced Appraisal Team Members who
currently provide appraisal services to the Australian Department of Defence and other
Clients.
Any of our services can be combined together for a customised programme to meet your
organisation's needs. Any organisation can benefit by having a very experienced team
analyse and baseline the organisation's processes and recommend expedient and efficient
methods to improve their capabilities.
CMMI Consulting Approach
The JA Team has a well-developed and proven strategy for delivering process improvements
and conducting CMMI® appraisals. The strategy is to:
• Obtain a clear understanding of the business goals and needs that motivate the
organisation toward process improvement.
• Provide training to set a base understanding of the improvement framework, the
CMMI® or understanding of how to manage improvement efforts.
• Determine the current state of the organisation's processes relative to the
improvement framework through the use of either CMMI® profile, appraisals, or
benchmarking.
• Provide action-planning workshops to help the organisation develop a plan for acting
on the findings of a benchmark or appraisal.
• Provide any necessary training, workshops, and expertise needed to help the
organisation implement the action plan.

Services Offered
• Training. Practical training in the implementation of the model (1-3 day training
sessions, based on the needs of the organisation using training modules designed to
educate an organisation on the very detailed practices associated with a particular
process area). SEI approved Introduction to CMMI® course (3 days). Click here for
detailed course information and online enrolment forms.
• Executive Briefings. These briefings are useful to managers and executives to
explain the benefit of an improvement program and to help set goals and
expectations for their upcoming improvement initiative (4 hours).
• CMMI® Profiles. Mini appraisals to benchmark the organisation and gauge
readiness for a formal appraisal. This method is less expensive and intrusive to the
organisation being assessed (1-2 Days).
• Appraisals. Conduct SEI Appraisal Requirements for CMMI® (ARC) compliant
Class C, B and SCAMPISM (Class A) benchmarking appraisals with our experienced
Appraisal Team Members.
Process Improvement Services

• Action Planning Workshops. Workshops that will take the results of an appraisal or
profile and help the organisation build a plan to address the gaps associated with the
CMMI® and to establish when, who and how long it will take to implement the actions
in order for the organisation to further mature its capabilities (1-2 days).
• Measurement Workshop. JA can provide a workshop and artefacts to establish an
effective measurement program that will integrate business goals with the
organisation's and project's goals. The program will help identify the data to be
collected, how to analyse and interpret the data and how to understand whether the
goals are being achieved.

CMMI® Model Overview

Capability Maturity Models® provide an approach for an
organisation to assess and improve the processes
employed in delivering their required outcomes. In
particular, the models provide an approach for judging the
maturity of the processes of an organisation and for
identifying the key practices that are required to increase
the maturity of these processes.
CMMI® facilitates enterprise-wide process improvement,
unlike single-discipline models that can result in confusion
and higher costs. CMMI® models are available in two
representations, continuous or staged.
The continuous representation provides a recommended
order for approaching process improvements for specified
process areas (PAs). This representation is most suited to
organisations that desire to improve specific process areas.
Under this representation, the organisation's process
capability level is assessed.
The staged representation is used when an organisation
desires to bring all the organisation's processes up to the
same level of maturity. Under the representation, the
organisation's maturity level (ML) is assessed.
To access more information on the capability maturity models
or for more information on the process improvement services JA provides, refer to the flyers
at the end of this document.
Training
JA currently offers two CMMI training courses. Each is described below, followed by a flyer
that describes the particular course in greater detail.

Capability Maturity Model and CMMI are registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. SCAMPI is a service mark of Carnegie Mellon
University.

CMMI for Small Projects and Small to Medium Enterprises

Course Name: Implementing CMMI® on Small Projects and Small to Medium Enterprises
Duration: 1/2 Day
Overview: Interpretation and tailoring are required to successfully apply the Software
Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) to any organisation.
Special considerations need to be considered for small organisations. The CMMI® model
was developed with a bias toward large, government contracting organisations. However,
there are many challenges with a small organisation’s ability to dedicating people to process
improvement tasks. The application domain and environment must be considered in
determining the degree of formality needed in a particular context.
Presenter: Mr Andy Felschow is an internationally recognised expert in software process
improvement and is authorised through the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) to lead CBA
IPIs, to teach the introduction to the CMMI and Lead SCAMPI appraisals. He is the President

(SPIN) where he has presented on several software process improvement topics. He is a
regular speaker at several conferences including the SEPG conference and the International

This seminar will provide insight into many of these considerations and answer your
organisation’s questions related to how a small organisation or project can successfully
comply with the intent of the CMMI®.
