Preliminary

The interview is a method used to obtain any information, explanation, or materials for a research study. With this method, a researcher will be able to review the information by interviewing the parties who have information. In addition, by running the interview, indirectly we will be able to recognize the personality of the interviewees. This is because, during interviews conducted many questions that need to be answered by whether they answered honestly, in denial or lying.

Introduction

Joint appointment with Dr. Sahril was made one month from the date of the interview was conducted. I also have to provide 20 different questions for this interview which involves questions of personal, career, opinion and current issues. This interview was held in his mother's house in Taman Melaka Baru, Batu Berendam Melaka. It was conducted on May 1, 2011 at 9.00pm, and it lasted for an hour. He is a friendly and cooperative. He is the second of six siblings. Meanwhile, he lived in Kuala Lumpur recently graduated as Master in Psychological Medicine at the University Medical Center in Kuala Lumpur. He also stated that it is very happy and proud to be in this profession now. Furthermore, the ambition to be a doctor is a result of the encouragement, promotion and dreams of his mother who wanted to see one of his son becoming a doctor. Although initially, his real dream was to become a pilot. But he is thankful that his career has made him a man of perseverance and courage to face life now is full of trials and challenges. It is expected that the interviews will be conducted to provide information and explain some of the issues based on the opinion of a medical officer at a University Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

Me

In Malaysia, a job as a doctor looked great and noble in our society. How do doctors look at these allegations?

Doctor :

Personally, I am agreed with your statement to say that profession as a doctor is a noble job. But we need to aware the responsibility behind it of when you become a doctor. You are dealing with the life of your patients and in fact you will be responsible on what will happen to your patient.

Me

Doctoral profession is a profession that is challenging and integrity. How does a doctor look at the profession was always the highest, in applications to higher education by students who are smart?

Doctor :

This is profession as in my opinion is really challenging as we need to deal with human beings' life and not other thing else. It is good to say if you are mentally prepared let join us to become a doctor. If not, please join other profession. However, to further study in medicine nowadays is not that easy and competitive as we got a lot of brilliant students at the same time compete among themselves as to get place to study in this area.

Is it proper if parents encourage all their children to choose the profession of doctor, while the government now welcomes students to participate in vocational and technical fields?

Doctor :

The first and most important is your "Niat" or "Nawaitu". If you choose to become a doctor as to earn more money, to become famous, just forget it. As far as we concern, the profession as a doctor is not the shortcut for you to earn more money, as nowadays got other profession that can make more money such as engineer, business etc. Nevertheless, it is good for to become a doctor if you are sincere and your "nawaitu" as to help people.

Can a doctor tell me a bit how you can get involved in a specialist field psychiatrist that is less popular than the area of medical doctors?

Doctor :

To be honest, I choose psychiatrist as my profession rather than to became physician, surgeon or gynecologist, as because personally I love to talk, to counsel, as well as to help patients especially for those who are having psychological problem, emotional disturbances and vice versa. I'm not agreed to say the profession as psychiatrist is not as popular as to compare with other discipline in medicine. As our Malaysia will became develop country in the year 2020, our Malaysian people cannot run away from having a lot of stressor that can contributed them to suffer depression.

As an experienced doctor who specializes in psychiatrist, how doctors look about the public opinion on this psychiatric patients?

Doctor :

Our Malaysian peoples' perception about psychiatry a.k.a mental health, toward our mental/ psychiatric patients are still far behind if we want to compare to those from western. We got this stigmatization or labeling toward our psychiatric patient and even they are not dare to seek treatment from us if having any difficulties as afraid of this stigma. So what to do? Need a lot of awareness campaign as to reduce those stigma or in other word bridging the gap.

I am a teacher who taught special education and taught many students who have various defects. My question, how far is it true that if a patient claims autism not getting proper treatment will be psychiatric patients?

Doctor :

Don't be mistaken to say that autism can lead to psychiatric illness as it is itself one part of our subspecialty psychiatric disorder. It is common to see them in child and adolescent psychiatric clinic. Autism is a neurological disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. Though there is no medication cure, there is a reason for therapy for autistic children. This is a lifelong disability, and depending on severity if left untreated, a youngster's social and speech skills

may not develop properly. In short, the lack of treatment will affect the autistic child and the people around him for his entire life. Me : In the classroom for special education programs, particularly in terms of problems faced by many due to grade control students suffering from ADHD and hyper active. In the psychiatry field, whether it can help students like this? Doctor : Again those kids who have ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder also need treatment and special attention from our Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit. Our layman always labeling those ADHD kids as naughty or problematic kids and this is totally wrong at all as we here as psychiatrist has medication as to treat this condition. Of course, not only parents to detect it early but also teacher also got their important role as to detect this ADHD kids and to bring them to see us for further treatment. Untreated those kids with ADHD will affect their future and entire life.

Although doctors is a very challenging task, how the doctor sees the role of doctors in developing human capital as a mechanism for the formation of personal identity?

Doctor :

It is difficult to comment about this statement, as the role of doctor in development of human capital as a mechanism to built up the personal identity, well in my opinion not even doctors but all us may play an important role for the formation of personal identity.

How do doctors see a 1 Malaysian Clinic services to benefit people less fortunate? Basically as we know, the main purpose of our government to introduce the 1 Malaysian Clinics is to ease the burden of government hospitals as there would be more patients seeking treatments for minor illnesses in these clinics. I agreed to say that it would help to reduce the cost especially to those who cannot afford to seek treatment at private clinic.

Me

Is 1 Malaysian Clinics should be expanded in each Dun because there is a remote area in Sarawak needs of mobile clinics to meet the needs of the community care?

Doctor :

Yes, absolutely our government should build more of these Klinik 1 Malaysia in the urban and remote areas to provide fast and cheap treatment for the poor citizen.

In view of the doctor, does it help the people in the current economic situation in which rising oil prices?

Doctor :

As far as we concern, the 1Malaysia Clinic is aiming of providing quality healthcare to public. We all know that the healthcare expenses are very expensive nowadays and our Government initiatives is timely to meet the urgent needs of people. Therefore, this is a good news to all Malaysian.

Me

In the opinion of doctors, how the cooperation between the community and clinic or hospital in addressing the problem of abandoned babies?

Doctor :

Mainly, we may organized public awareness campaign and teach the parents on parenting skills to better equip themselves to bring up their children and make every possible effort to spend quality time with their children.

Me

What about the doctor's own role in jointly combating symptoms of abandoned babies in our society today?

Doctor :

As a doctor, we need to prepare ourselves as well as to play a role in any public awareness campaigns, as to curb this social illness. This dumping of new-born babies is a very serious social ills in our society nowadays.

Me

In addition, whether the clinic or hospital makes a cooperation between the school in distributing information to students about the negative effects of this illicit relationship?

Doctor :

As what I had mentioned earlier, we knew that this is very serious social ills in our society and involving promiscuous youths and teenagers. So with the continuous awareness campaign hopefully could instill positive values in this children from young to ensure they become responsible citizens.

Malaysia is one country that has the highest diabetes patients in the world. How does the doctor look at the health ministry's role in distributing information to the public on the dangers of this disease?

Doctor :

We understood that our Malaysia nowadays had increasing the cases of newly diagnosed of diabetes mellitus. According to Malaysian Diabetic Association, there are nearly 1.2 million people in Malaysia who have diabetes. But I am in my opinion to say that our Ministry of Health had played an important role to promote wellness in diabetes mellitus illness and to ensure the quality of life among diabetic patients as well as to improve their skills in self care on diabetes mellitus.

How does a doctor look at the role of government in order to address the problem of diabetes in the community by reducing the price of sugar subsidies? Is it effective or just a gimmick only?

Doctor :

For me, I would rather look it at a positive perspective. I think even before the rise of sugar prices itself, our Health Ministry already launched "Less Sugar Intake" campaign to get Malaysians to consume less sugar, and change their eating habits and lifestyle. In one of the speech by our Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Malaysians were still consuming too much sugar through food and drinks despite a ministry warning to cut back. Anyway, by increasing the sugar price, hope we could reduce sugar intake in our Malaysian consumer...Insya Allah....

Apart from the responsibility of being a doctor at the University Hospital, the role of doctors in the community which can be used as an example to the younger generation?

Doctor :

Every of us agree that as a doctor, we need to become a good example for them or in other word as a role model for young generation. For examples, in the scenario where by we as a doctor need to control our bodyweight. If we can commit to these goals, both as individuals and as a medical profession, imagine the example we would set! As individuals we will feel better and stronger, and

as a medical profession well serve as better role models for our patients. To succeed in healing others, we must also heal ourselves.

What is the impetus for doctors to become a successful physician psychiatrist? Off course my parents and my family who gave me support and encouraged me to become a psychiatrist.

Doctor :

Me

In addition, whether the doctor has an idol in the continuing challenges in this doctoral profession?

Doctor :

It is enough to say that my family especially my lovely wife and my children.

The last question for doctor, the advice to prospective doctors to be successful in this world and hereafter?

Doctor :

Always remember that "Rome was not built in a day"... So if your ambition is to become a doctor, you need to work harder and I would like to say that it is very long journey... And again your "nawaitu".... Insya Allah you will be success..

Close After the interviews conducted, a lot of useful information can be shared in this

course work. Hope that it will be much help a particular party in writing journals or reflections related to medicine. In addition, it also increases the level of communication in English and also adds my vocabulary. Hopefully in the near future, this interview will help me in development of social relationships and to increase confidence when be in this situation. I also hope that my work is achieving the desired standard by UPSI and score me in answering the tasks given by the lecturer.
