Element 1 1 Fire Prevention Performance Criteria 1.1 Demonstrate an understanding of the need for good house keeping. 1.2 Show an awareness of the causes of spontaneous combustion, and the dangers of welding, gas cutting, grinding, handling of fuels and lubricating oils and dangers of smoking. 1.3 Describe the care required with electrical equipment and appliances. Element 2 2 Fire Detection Performance Criteria 2.1 Demonstrate a basic knowledge of common types of fire detection equipment, and the appropriate response to an alarm. Element 3 3 Portable and Fixed Fire Extinguishing Systems Performance Criteria 3.1 Show an understanding of: (a) the operation and usage of the correct appliance for a given set of circumstances

Element 4 4 Fire Prevention Safety Devices Performance Criteria 4.1 Describe the construction and state the importance of vent pipe gauzes, overflow tank and alarm, quick closing valves, sounding pipe cocks and remote trips. Element 5 5 Dangers of Oil and Gas Leakage

Performance Criteria 5.1 Show an awareness of the dangers of oil leaking under pressure. 5.2 Show an awareness of the dangers of petroleum, welding, refrigerant and extinguishing gases and their effects on the human body. Element 6 1 Dangers of Confined Spaces Performance Criteria 5.3 Show an awareness of the possibility of oxygen depletion and/or toxic or flammable gases in duct keels, cofferdams, fuel tanks and water ballast tanks. Element 7 2 Procedures to be adopted when entering confined spaces. Performance Criteria

5.4 Describe the preparation of void spaces and tanks for entry. State the precautions that must be exercised when entering void spaces and tanks. 5.14 Show an appreciation of the possible consequences of dissimilar metals in contact in a marine environment with particular reference to corrosion. 5.15 Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the correct joining material for use with steam, air, oils and water and a knowledge of the different jointing methods : welding and brazing, flanging and compression unions. Performance Criteria 5.16 Show an appreciation of the physical effects of these products on the human being (scalding, burns, skin diseases and toxicity). 5.17 Show an appreciation that many products have an adverse effect on the environment and a basic understanding of methods used to prevent pollution of the sea and air. Element 11 6 Auxiliary Machinery Performance Criteria 5.18 Demonstrate the ability to describe: the basic principles of construction and operation of pumps, filters, heat exchangers, condensers, compressors, purifiers, oily water separators, refrigeration systems and other auxiliary machinery used aboard ship. Element 12 7 Ship Systems Performance Criteria 5.19 Sketch typical line diagrams of the basic systems including bilge, ballast, cooling water and domestic freshwater. 5.20 Sketch the complete fuel system from storage to engine.

5.21 Show an appreciation that line diagram symbols and colour codes vary internationally. Element 13 8 Combustion Performance Criteria 5.22 Demonstrate an ability to recognise the common faults in combustion in diesel engines and boilers and rectify them.

Element 14 9 Ship Construction Performance Criteria 5.23 Demonstrate: - the ability to produce sketches of transverse and longitudinal sections of a ship and identify the principal parts. - the ability to sketch simple weathertight closures and watertight doors. Correctly use common ship construction terminology. Explain the operation of common watertight closures. Show an appreciation of the importance of internal compartmentalisation and watertight closures, and an understanding of the need for watertight integrity.

Element 16 11 Principles of Operation and Safety Features of Steering Gears, Stern Tubes, Thrust Blocks, Shafting and Ships Side Valves. Performance Criteria 5.31 Demonstrate: - the ability to sketch and describe the operation and testing of hydraulic ram or rotary vane steering gears. (sketches to include relief valves and isolation valves). - the ability to sketch and describe an oil filled stern tube and associated equipment. - the ability to sketch and describe a Michel type thrust block. - the ability to sketch and describe the construction of typical ship side valves and their attachment to the hull. 5.32 Show an appreciation of the effects on shaft alignment due to hull movement.
