As expected at the beginning of the

However, a last game defeat against

Chelsea were unable to grab the final

Liverpool continued their slow slide

Blackburn, Wigan and Birmingham,

Tottenham in mid-table finish shocker!

Analysis
The All-England Premiership brought up
many surprises. The demise of Liverpool
and Arsenal was perhaps expected –
neither are famed for bringing through
young English talent. The English
interest in Europe was ended pretty
fast, showing that perhaps English
players are just not up to scratch,
or that they are not over-rated in
the game.

Man Utd won the league, showing that

their academy policy should work very
well for them in the future, having
produced plenty of decent first team
and squad players in the past. Martin
O’Neill has built a team around English
talent and that stood them in very good
stead. Tottenham failed to perform as
expected – perhaps they are doomed
to be a mid-table team no matter what.

The Team of the Year have all been

er, the English ‘team’. Oh dear. in real life. But, surprisingly, the first
England game since the end of the
season, contained only 5 of the 11
players who made the team of the year.
There is no surprise that those 5 players
have been perhaps the most influential
players in England's recent history. Those
players were John Terry, Rio Ferdinand,
Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and
Wayne Rooney.

for the first three years (though we’ll

For three years Meon Valley had

Tournament Group C:
Real Madrid 3 v 1 Nottingham Forest

Brian Clough’s Forest started brightest in

the opening game of Group C. Their high
tempo direct approach put Real
immediately under pressure and they
struggled to impose themselves on the
game in the initial stages. Forest’s hard
work was rewarded when, after 17
minutes, Trevor Francis set up Tony
Woodcock for the opening goal of the
game. However, their lead didn’t last
too long as in the 32nd minute, an
unmarked Ferenc Puskas headed past
Shilton from seven yards out. Three

to complete Forest’s misery. The game
finished 3-1 to Real.

The all Italian encounter was dominated

strangely subdued Juventus side, whose
only real effort in the first half was
squandered by an out of sorts Paolo
Rossi. It wasn’t really until Trappatoni

minutes that Juve began to take the
game to Milan. Zbignew Boniek pulled

Van Basten almost scored again, however
Dino Zoff pulled of a fantastic save to

Pele’s prediction dates back to 1977,

The Premier Soccer League (PSL)

is the current incarnation of the
National Soccer League in South Africa.
Founded in 1996, the PSL has helped
raise the standard of football at club
level, providing the game with
better media coverage and much-
improved revenue through strong
sponsorship deals.

There are sixteen clubs in the Premier

Soccer League. The season begins in
August and finishes in May. Teams play
each other twice (home and away),
receiving three points for a win and one
point for a draw. Each team is allowed
to register a maximum of 99 players for
the season and during a match, may use
3 substitutes from 7 named.

The champions of the Premier League

the African Champions League, while the
third placed team and the South African
