Belgian market : After 2 years crisis, the recovery was slightly perceptible, but only from November 2010 onwards. This recovery concerned small machines so the expected turnover should increase by 4% in 2010. What concerns 2011, this trend is expected to be maintained. Turnover should rise by only 6%. Belgian production : The increase in 2010 (+10%) is only due to a recovery outside Europe. For 2011, we do expect a further increase (+15%) because of a stronger growth in some European countries and also in Africa, the Middle East and CIS.

The constant prices time series for imports and exports have been calculated seperately by using separate exports and imports price indices. Therefore they do not add up at the total level. There might be some consistency problems conserning the home market data since it has been calculated as a residual from the export and gross production series. Notice that at this point of the year there is data available only for trade and prices. Therefore the estimates are subjected to substantial revisions every year. What it comes to the amount of companies (the first question: number of companies in 2010) the figure is just an estimate each year and therefore always incorrect. No time series can be constructed of the entries of subsequent years. There would be hard data available concerning the year 2009.

Compared with a market which had collapsed in 2009, year 2010 appears as an resumption year. Globally, the turnover increased of 6% with regard to year 2009. In details, the French market of the earthmoving equipment globally increased over the year 2010, with a total of 22.650 machines (4.250 more than in 2009), representing an increase of 23 % in terms of units sales (+17% turnover). The market of wheelexcavators and wheelloaders has respectively increased by 43 % and 63 %. Concerning backoes, the increase was from 11% with a historically lowest market. the market of skidsteers remains at 2009s level, with 3% of growth. In contrast, the market of Tower cranes continued to decrease in France (-25% in terms of turnover and -16% in terms of units sales).
The investment in France didnt really pick up again, most of customers (the construction industry) used their machines without additional new investment. Finally, in 2011, the trend should continue to improve. The construction industry (building and civil engineering) is expecting a slow increase. Few construction works are planned for the coming years and a resumption of the investment in new machines is also expected after a long break. Naturally, year 2011 should be higher than 2010, but the increase per units should remain at a low level. In this context, our forecast is an increase of 10 to 15 % in terms of turnovers compared to 2010, due to a better order book at the end of 2010. Source : CISMA

2010 turned out to be a better year for German manufacturers than they had expected. Total sales exhibited double-digit growth, with road and earthmoving equipment developing extraordinarily well. However, the strong year-on-year growth of 2010 cannot hide the fact that the industry is still below the long-term average of previous years. Currently, we see the industry output at 2005 levels. Due to remarkable order backlog, 2011 is expected to start positive. Our forecast for the industry is another 10 percent growth compared to 2010. As of today, influence of the new emission regulations on machinery sales remain unclear. We might see some short-term effects (accelerated investments
into 'old-configuration machines' as long as they are available). Mid-term prospects for the construction industry are positive with exceptionally high growth rates in Asia's and Latin America's emerging markets. This trend inevitably leads to a shift of equipment demand which, in turn, will result in even stronger production base in these markets. Hence, German manufacturers will enhance their overseas productions significantly whereas equipment export growth will be limited in the next years.

In 2010 the situation of the Italian construction equipment industry didn't improve. The turnover decreased by approx. 8,5% compared to 2009. The domestic market remained at a standstill and export recorded again a decrease, not so dramatic as the one recorded in 2009. As for 2011, the signals of recovery are not yet clear, nevertheless the situation is expected to slightly improve mainly thanks to the increase of sales on foreign markets. Unfortunately, we do not foresee a real recovery before 2012. (ucomesa) The deficit in 2010 was less than the collapse we saw in the two previous years, even if the revision of our calculations here shows a
decrease, and this leads us to hope that it may be a signal for a progressive reversal of the trend, in small part also encouraged by scrappage incentives which saw earth moving receive 7% of the almost 80 million assigned to our machine makers in all. But the earth-moving sector remains linked to the trend in the construction industry, which is not expected to show an effective recovery before 2012. (comamoter) Source: COMAMOTER/UCOMESA/UNACEA

Turkey
The first half of 2011 was a period in which the domestic demand for construction equipment remained strong. The government expenditures peaked before the general national election held in June 2011 definitely was one of major stimulus for this strong demand. Especially local authorities and municipalities enjoyed generous loans extended by state owned finance organizations and they used these funds for strengthening their equipment and machinery fleets. The double digit growth rate of Turkish economy in the 1Q of the year is a clear indication of this rather unusual strong demand. In the second half of the year domestic demand for the construction equipment may stay strong due to some mega infrastructure projects such as Istanbul-Izmir motorway and high speed train railways. The inability of equipment and machinery suppliers to meet the demand fully due to Japanese earthquake tragedy and global raw material and component shortages will be promoting stronger demand The election victory of the ruling party and their foundation of single party government as the third one in a straight raw will improve the confidence of investors and increase their appetite for new investments. On the other hand the major threat against the continuation of the expansion of the economy and domestic demand seems to be expected cooling down actions from the new government in order to decrease the negative trade balance reaching record levels. The sanctions applied to the banks to increase the interest rate of consumer and vehicle credits and mortgages already showed its effects. If the trade balance negative gap continues in the rest of the year new taxes may appear on the agenda of new government. These measures will definitely put a brake on the growth of the economy and hence the domestic demand may become weaker towards the end of the year. The construction machinery exports too are increasing. Especially the exports to Africa and Middle Asia are very promising. Chine and India are two very important potential export areas to which Turkish exporters are still to find better ways and methods to become more successful. Russia is another enormous potential for the construction machinery export of Turkey. Generally speaking 2011 seems to be a year that Turkish construction equipment and machinery sector healed the wounds of terrible 2008 and 2009 after global finance crisis. However the question of how long this spring time will continue remains to be answered for all of the concerned players.

In real terms the UK market improved by nearly 40% in 2010 (based on manufacturers invoiced sales, wholesales), but the market is still well below the pre recession levels. Even after an expected 16% increase this year (2011) the market will still be below the levels seen the latter half of the last decade.
The increased markets are based on replacement demand on machines becoming either too old or less fuel effecient than desired. Even with the large percentage increase in the market 2010 v 2009, the number of active machines in the machine park is still declining. The likely cut backs in public investment, which accounts for 30% of Construction Output, is likely to keep the market below the levels seen a few years ago for another four or five years.
