DESCRIPTION:
Landscapers plan and maintain grounds and landscape jobsites. Prepare and grade terrain, applying fertilizers, seeding and sod lawns, and transplanting shrubs and plants, using manual or power-operated equipment. May dig trenches and install drain tiles or repair concrete and asphalt walks and driveways.
SKILLs:
Strong communication skills decision-making and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently as well as with a team Adapt new technologies often interpreting detailed plans and instructions Good written and oral skills are required Ability to read and understand blueprints
EDUCATION:
Experience as a landscape and grounds maintenance labourer may be required An apprenticeship program is available for horticulturists, arboriculturists and landscape gardeners Provincial licence to apply chemical fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
You will acquire a wide range of landscape and horticultural skills through a combination of in-class studies and approved industry experience. Students grain comprehensive knowledge of landscape design and development, site construction, general horticulture, grounds maintenance, and related technologies. Take part in a paid four-month co-op position in a landscape or horticulture business following semester two. Students must successfully complete a career management course to help them develop effective job search skills, prior to the work term. The school provides a range of services to support students, including working with business, industry and government to identify co-op employment opportunities.

GETTING STARTED

THE FOLLOWING ARE 3 SIMPLE WAYS OF GETTING STARTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Company or Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training. You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in Civil Construction. All of this information may be found through our website. You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gaining experience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
