Project Charter The Kings 2011 Summer Vacation project will allow for the family and joining family to design and implement an enjoyable vacation. When a family plans to go on vacation the first questions are where, how much will the vacation cost, and how will the family get to the vacation destination. A project charter and project plan with defined scope and objectives will ensure the Kings 2011 Summer Vacation will be a success. It is the Project Managers job to make sure the objectives are met to enable success. The role of the project manager is to manage the project. Project management is the planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of company resources for a relatively short-term objective that has been established to complete specific goals and objectives. (Kerzmer, 2009 p. 4) Although the project manager will manage the Kings family summer vacation project the project manager is also a stakeholder in the project along with the project sponsor and team members. The project manager develops the project plan with the project team members, will assign duties to the team member, and ensure the project is completed. The project manager is responsible for risk management, communication, escalating issues, and ensuring the project is on budget, within scope, and on schedule. The team members are responsible for performing task and as directed by the Project Manager to produce deliverables as specified in the project plan. The team members for the project were assigned to research vacation locations that will accommodate a large group, have amusement parks with rides and water activities close by, and transportation options. The team was also given the budget requirements that will need to be met for the familys vacation. Any risk in the project must be managed by the project team, stakeholders, risk management team, or subject matter expert. The project charter will need to identify any risk.

The characteristics of any potential risk to the project must be documented. The first step to risk management is risk management planning. How to approach and plan the activities for risk management is part of the risk management planning process. The success of the project will be measured by the project objectives are met; the project is delivered on schedule, and delivered on budget. Successful project management can then be defined as having achieved the project objectives: within time, within cost, at the desired performance/technology level, while utilizing the assigned resources effectively and efficiently, accepted by the customer. (Kerzmer, 2009) With the Kings family vacation the objective was to determine the vacation location, the activities during the vacation, transportation to the vacation location and the accommodations during the vacation. The use of the five process steps as described in the PMBOK guide which are project initiating, project planning, project execution, project monitoring and control, and project closure. (Kerzmer, 2009) By utilizing the five process steps the objectives were realized. At project closure the location for the Kings family 2011 summer was determined. The vacation will include the King family and an extension of family members which includes cousins, siblings, and friends of the King immediate family. The team had researched and determines the best location for the Kings family and extended family vacation is Cedar Point located in Sandusky, Ohio. This location was selected on the facts that Cedar Points packages include hotel accommodations with family suites, at the same location as the outdoor water park and amusement park, and has reasonable group rates that will fit within the budget requirements. The vacation date was also set for August 12th through August 14th. This was the best time for all vacationers. Only one business day would need to be taken off for those who worked and the children in the family would still be on summer break from school. The other objective of

transportation was also met. The Cedar Point Resort and Amusement Park is approximately 4 hours away from the city in which the King family resides it was determined that driving would be the means of transportation, either by family vehicle or rental vehicle. In conclusion, the project is complete and the results will be initiated in August 2011 when the vacation takes place. The project was determined to be a success based on all objectives was met and no visible risks were shown. The Families are anticipating on the upcoming vacation to having a fun, no issues, and well deserved vacation. Following the five process steps of process management ensured the planning of the vacation a success. The developed charter was important in making the planning process easy and manageable. Finally, the project manager was able to manage the project successfully while meeting the objectives, staying on budget and completing the project on time.
