TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

FAULTS IN THREE PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR.

DISCIPLINARY/ INTERDISCIPLINARY: Electrical / Mechanical

AIMS:

The aim of our project is to reduce faults of three phase induction motor (7th Semester)

Detailed study of possible solutions for reducing the faults in three phase induction motor (8th Semester)

OBJECTIVES:

Three phase induction motor faults

can be reduced by using following kind of protection.

PRE-PROJECT
PROBLEM: Real time faults when the three phase induction motor is in running
condition.

HOW THIS PROBLEM OCCURS?

Electrically related faults (33%): The faults come under this classification are over/under voltage, over load, phase reversing, unbalanced voltage, single phasing and earth fault. Mechanically related faults (32%): The rotor winding failure, stator winding failure and bearing faults are most occurring mechanical fault in three-phase induction machine. Environmentally related faults (15%): The external moisture, contamination and ambient temperature also affect the induction motor performance. The vibration of machine also affects the performance of induction machine under various operations.

INFLUENCE OF ELECTRICAL FAULTS ON MOTOR PERFORMANCE Unbalanced voltage comprises of two opposing components, a positive sequence component that produces the wanted positive torque and a negative sequence component that produces unwanted negative torque (Saffet and Nwankpa, 2005). As the amount of unbalance in the supply voltage increase, the positive sequence voltage decreases and negative sequence voltage increases. The percentage of unbalance defined by NEMA:

(1)
Causes and Effects of Unbalanced Supply Voltage Causes Open delta transformers, unbalanced loading, unequal tap settings, high resistance connections, shunted single phase load, unbalanced primary voltage and defective transformer.

POSSIBLE FAULTS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS:

1ST problem: MOTOR DOESNT STARTS. Solution: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Fit new fuses Reset circuit breaker Remove clamps, locks etc Sort out control circuit

2nd problem: SUPPLY OR STARTER TRIPS OUT AT START. Solution: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Fix up connections Change motor for correct size Change cable for correct size Correct setting for over voltage and overload

3rd problem: MOTOR OVERHEATING. Solution: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Fix problem with load or fit larger motor Clean motor Sort out cooling of air temperature and flow Correct voltage or frequency Balance supply

4th problem: NO LOAD AMPERES IN EXCESS OR FULL LOAD AMPERES. Solution: 1. Sort out and correct common at motor terminals 2. Correct supply voltage 3. Change motor for correct voltage and frequency

OVERVIEW OF 8th SEMESTER

Detailed study of possible solution to reduce the real time faults of three phase induction motor.

Outcome:
By applying the above mentioned possible solution we can reduce the faults of three phase induction motor and increase performance of three phase induction motor.
