Making
your Home
more
Energy
Efficient
Compliments of Ed
Wohlfiel
As a whole, your home has
a great impact on nature. You
can make your home more
energy-efficient to save
money and boost its per-
formance. Although the
most energy-efficient meas-
ures could require a large ini-
tial outlay, the investment is
worth it since it will provide
you great savings on your
yearly utility bills in the years
to come.
Below are a few tips on
making your home more
energy-efficient:
Proper insulation on the
attic and walls make it more
energy-efficient. Proper
insulation slows down the
heat that flows out of your
home in winter or summer,
thus less energy is needed to
cool or heat your home.
Foam insulation materials,
cellulose and fiberglass
reduce the heat conducted
on the wall system when
they are properly installed.
Use energy-efficient mod-
els to replace your leaky and
old windows to boost the
efficiency of your windows.
Consider putting up storm
windows or weather strip-
ping. You will be able to save
from 7 to 24 percent of your
air-conditioning and heating
costs when you replace old
windows.
Planting shrubs and shade
trees help you save more
energy. The tress could block
the heat of the sun in sum-
mer and the bare branches
of the trees allow heat radia-
tion to your home during
winter.
Use more energy-efficient
bulbs like the compact fluo-
rescent lights instead of your
old incandescent light bulbs.
While compact lights are
more expensive, they last
much longer and provide

Contact-Dorothy Francis, Lakes of the North Real Estate (231) 585-6200
By Jim Akans
Theres something very special about a ranch home design.
Perhaps its the sense of spaciousness, the ease of single level liv-
ing, or maybe the subtle, low profile architecture of a ranch that
melds seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
This wonderful ranch home is even more special in that is it
located in the fabulous Lakes of the North community, offering
year-round resort style amenities, situated southwest of Gaylord.
The home features nearly 1,700 square feet of living space, includ-
ing three good-size bedrooms, two full baths, large open kitchen,
beautiful corner fireplace, a huge 33 x 13 family room area, large
sunroom/breezeway, and much, much more.
The large property surrounding the home has been very nicely
landscaped, and there is a commons area behind the property
and treed golf course in front, resulting in fantastic views that
make this a very scenic spot indeed. A 20 x 12 foot Toy Garage
offers extra space for lawn and recreational gear, and the attached
two-car garage and enormous (and partially finished) basement
provides even more storage space.
An extra bonus is that this outstanding home is located in the
amazing Lakes of the North community, and homeowners will
enjoy year-round resort style amenities. Those include club-
houses, swimming pool, two lakes, a golf course, horse stables, a
restaurant, an airstrip, and the DNR snowmobile trails and cross-
country skiingall located just a short distance from the doorstep
of this home.
The listing price for this Lakes of the North ranch home is just
$129,900. For more information or to arrange a tour of this home,

By Jim Akans
It is one of the oldest family-operated restau-
rants in Michigan, and one of the most desirable
of dining destinations.
Founded in 1919 by George Dumas, the Sugar
Bowl in Gaylord was launched as a homemade
candy and ice cream shop, employing what was
a common name at that time for candy empori-
ums across the United States. Soon after open-
ing, Georges brother Harry joined the operation
and within a few years the Sugar Bowl began
offering sandwiches to their customers, and the
nearly 100 year-old legacy of this downtown
Gaylord landmark began.
Today, the Sugar Bowl Restaurant is operated
by George Dumas son, Bob, managed by Tony
Kaly, and offers a full traditional American style
menu featuring a variety of specialties such as
delectably tender prime rib, fresh whitefish,
gourmet salads, and tantalizing homemade
desserts highlighted by red raspberry pie,
cheese cakes, and Greek rice pudding and
baklava. During the weekends, a Sugar Bowl
specialty is steaks grilled over charcoal and
sauts created right before the eyes of the din-
ers. Expertly prepared by head chef, Bob
Kidder, who has overseen the kitchen at the
establishment for more than 35 years, the entic-
ing menu at Sugar Bowl Restaurant draws area
residents and visitors to northern Lower
Michigan back time and time again.
The quality our food, states Bob Dumas,
and the consistency of our meals and our serv-
ice bring our guests back often. We are known
across the United States as a restaurant destina-
tion here in Northern Michigan.
The ambience inside the Sugar Bowl
Restaurant beautifully reflects the establish-
ments 93-year heritage. It is elegant yet family-
friendly, with a large family dining area serving
breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a formal dining
room featuring tablecloth service during
evenings after 5:30 pm. Vintage photos line the
walls, providing a fascinating glimpse of early
Gaylord and Otsego County.
The care and attentiveness of the chefs and
servers in providing customers with the ultimate
up-north dining experience is an ongoing hall-
mark of the Sugar Bowls legacy. The entire staff
is dedicated to ensuring each customers visit is
an enjoyable and satisfying one.
The Sugar Bowl Restaurant is located at 216
West Main Street (M-32) in downtown Gaylord,
the same place the establish-
ment has been since it was
founded back in 1919. Hours
of operation are Monday thru
Thursday, and Sunday from 7
am until 9 pm, and Friday and
Saturday from 7 am until 10
pm.
During that next visit to
Gaylord, be sure to check out
this legendary restaurant.

The Crooked Tree Arts Center was founded
in 1971 by Sally Clark, Edith Gilbert, Grace
Jessop, Judy Koza, Eddi Offield, Jack Perry,
and Carolyn Rader. The arts center moved
into the downtown Petoskey former United
Methodist Church in 1980. In 2002 a full ren-
ovation of the facility was completed and
annually over 30,000 people enjoy their pro-
grams and events.
For more information, contact the arts cen-
ter, 231-347-4337 or www.crookedtree.org.
great savings because they less use energy.
If the furnace you have was built before
1992, it is likely to waste about 35 percent of
fuel and most probably at the end of its serv-
ice. Replace your old furnace with a new
highly effective system such as the condens-
ing furnace. It provides up to ninety percent
yearly efficiency. This type of furnace wastes
not more than 10 percent of natural gas and
lets you save 27 percent on your heating
costs.
Turn your hot water system to the warm
setting to improve efficiency. Insulate the
hot water lines so they will not cool off easi-
ly. Use low-flow showers in your baths.
It would be preferable to schedule an
energy audit on your home so you can get
expert advice from energy auditors and
raters. They use special tools and skills to
evaluate your home and recommend the
most cost-effective measure to enhance the
efficiency and comfort of your home.
Release trapped air by bleeding radiators.
Shut down heating and loosen the bleed
valve located at the top of the radiator care-
fully. Do not forget to use rags in catching
drips.
Double glazing helps in cutting heat less
on your windows by half. The costs of dou-
ble-glazing vary but you can enjoy great sav-
ings on your utility costs
every year.
A more energy-efficient
home means you can get big
savings on your utility bills
and is a good way to do your
share in protecting the environment and
preserve nature. Remember that the lesser
carbon footprint your home leaves, the bet-
ter it will be for everyone.

Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or
friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you
cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A
Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a pro-
gram for you. Fear of Falling can be just as dangerous as
falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their
activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, mak-
ing the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also
experience increased isolation and depression when they
limit their interactions with family and friends.
A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality
of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is
designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity lev-
els among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals
to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall
risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength
and balance.
The Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior
Center is offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns
About Falls starting Monday, November 7th through
November 30th from 9:00-11:00am at the Crawford County
Commission on Aging & Senior Center. Classes are held twice
a week, Monday and Wednesdays for 4 weeks. Please call the
Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center at
989-348-7123 to register or for more information.

40 Points about Wheat
grass & its Nutritional
Values
1. Wheatgrass Juice is one of the best
sources of living chlorophyll available.
2. Chlorophyll is the first product of light
and, therefore, contains more light energy
than any other element.
3. Wheatgrass juice is a crude chlorophyll
and can be taken orally and as a colon
implant without toxic side effects.
4. Chlorophyll is the basis of all plant life.
5. Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all
green plants that contain chlorophyll. The
brain and all body tissues function at an opti-
mal level in a highly-oxygenated environ-
ment.
6. Chlorophyll is anti-bacterial and can be
used inside and outside the body as a healer.
7. Dr. Bernard Jensen says that it only takes
minutes to digest wheatgrass juice and uses
up very little body energy.
8. Science has proven that chlorophyll
arrests growth and development of unfriend-
ly bacteria.
9. Chlorophyll (wheatgrass) rebuilds the
bloodstream. Studies of various animals have
shown chlorophyll to be free of any toxic
reaction. The red cell count was returned to
normal within 4 to 5 days of the administra-
tion of chlorophyll, even in those animals
which were known to be extremely anemic or
low in red cell count.
10. Farmers in the Midwest who have ster-
ile cows and bulls put them on wheatgrass to
restore fertility. (The high magnesium con-
tent in chlorophyll builds enzymes that
restore the sex hormones.)
11. Chlorophyll can be extracted from
many plants, but wheatgrass is superior
because it has been found to have over 100
elements needed by man. If grown in organic
soil, it absorbs 92 of the known 102 minerals
from the soil.
12. Wheatgrass has what is called the grass-
juice factor, which has been shown to keep
herbivorous animals alive indefinitely.
13. Dr. Ann Wigmore and institutes based
on her teachings has been helping people get
well from chronic disorders for 30 years using
wheatgrass.
14. Liquid chlorophyll gets into the tissues,
refines them and makes them over.
15. Wheatgrass Juice is a superior detoxifi-
cation agent compared to carrot juice and
other fruits and vegetables. Dr Earp-Thomas,
associate of Ann Wigmore, says that 15
pounds of Wheatgrass is the equivalent of 350
pounds of carrot, lettuce, celery, and so forth.
16. Liquid chlorophyll washes drug
deposits from the body.
17. Chlorophyll neutralizes toxins in the
body.
18. Chlorophyll helps purify the liver.
19. Chlorophyll improves blood sugar
problems.
20. In the American Journal of Surgery
(1940), Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends
chlorophyll for its antiseptic benefits. The
article suggests the following clinical uses for
chlorophyll: to clear up foul smelling odors,
neutralize Strep infections, heal wounds, has-
ten skin grafting, cure chronic sinusitis, over-
come chronic inner-ear inflammation and
infection, reduce varicose veins and heal leg
ulcers, eliminate impetigo and other scabby
eruptions, heal rectal sores, successfully treat
inflammation of the uterine cervix, get rid of
parasitic vaginal infections, reduce typhoid
fever, and cure advanced pyorrhea in many
cases.
21. Wheatgrass Juice cures acne and even
help to remove scars after it has been ingest-
ed for seven to eight months. The diet must
be improved at the same time.
22. Wheatgrass juice acts as a detergent in
the body and is used as a body deodorant.
23. A small amount of wheatgrass juice in
the human diet helps prevents tooth decay.
24. Wheatgrass juice held in the mouth for
5 minutes will help eliminate toothaches. It
pulls poisons from the gums.
25. Gargle Wheat grass Juice for a sore
throat.
26. Drink Wheatgrass Juice for skin prob-
lems such as eczema or psoriasis.
27. Wheat grass Juice keeps the hair from
graying.
28. Pyorrhea of the mouth: lay pulp of
wheatgrass soaked in juice on diseased area
in mouth or chew wheat grass, spitting out
the pulp.
29. By taking Wheat grass Juice, one may
feel a difference in strength, endurance,
health, and spirituality, and experience a
sense of well-being.
30. Wheatgrass juice improves the diges-
tion.
31. Wheat grass juice is high in enzymes.
32. Wheatgrass juice is an excellent skin
cleanser and can be absorbed through the
skin for nutrition. Pour green juice over your
body in a tub of warm water and soak for 15
to 20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water.
33. Wheatgrass implants (enemas) are great
for healing and detoxifying the colon walls.
The implants also heal and cleanse the inter-
nal organs. After an enema,
wait 20 minutes, then
implant 4 ounces of wheat-
grass juice. Retain for 20
minutes.
34. Wheatgrass juice is
great for constipation and
keeping the bowels open. It
is high in magnesium.
35. Dr. Birscher, a research
scientist, called chlorophyll
"concentrated sun power."
He said, "Chlorophyll
increases the function of the
heart, affects the vascular system, the intes-
tines, the uterus, and the lungs."
36. According to Dr. Birscher, nature uses
chlorophyll (wheatgrass) as a body cleanser,
rebuilder, and neutralizer of toxins.
37. Wheat grass juice can dissolve the scars
that are formed in the lungs from breathing
acid gasses. The effect of carbon monoxide is
minimized since chlorophyll increases
hemoglobin production.
38. Wheatgrass Juice reduces high blood
pressure and enhances the capillaries.
39. Wheat grass Juice can remove heavy
metals from the body.
40. Wheatgrass juice is great for blood dis-
orders of all kinds
(To get the full benefit of chlorophyll it
must be from a living plant)

October is National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. Although one in eight
women living in the United States will devel-
op invasive breast cancer, early detection
and medical advances have saved the lives of
millions of women.
The public is invited to Be Enlightened, A
Breast Cancer Awareness Event. Guest
speakers include Dr. Mary Seger NP, PhD,
Author and Kimberly Smith a local breast
cancer survivor and an accountant at St.
Mary Cathedral Parish. The Zonta Club of
Gaylord Area will host the event from 5:30-
6:30pm at Saturn Booksellers on Thursday,
October 27th.
This is a free event, however, guests are
asked to RSVP through
info@GaylordZonta.org or by calling Cherie
Nutter at 989-731-5372.
Zonta International is a
world wide service organi-
zation. The Zonta Club of
Gaylord Area has been serv-
ing the local and global
communities for thirty-five
years. For more information
visit www.Zonta.org and

To encourage home radon testing, the
Health Department of Northwest Michigan is
waiving its $15 charge for radon kits during
National Radon Action Week. Free test kits
can be picked up during regular business
hours October 17-21 at Health Department
offices in Bellaire, Charlevoix,
Petoskey/Harbor Springs, and Gaylord.
Please bring your Property Tax Identification
Number with you; it is needed to map radon
levels in the four-county Health District.
The World Health Organization and U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency predict
radon gas will be the leading cause of lung
cancer for non-smokers in 2011. One in 15
American homes contains high levels of
radon. Millions of Americans are unknow-
i n g l y
exposed to
this danger-
ous gas. In
fact, a recent
study by
H a r v a r d
Uni v e r s i t y
ranks radon
as Americas
#1 in-home
hazard.
Scott Kendzierski, Director of
Environmental Health Services, said the only
way to know if you are exposed to elevated
radon levels is to test your home.
Fortunately, testing for radon is easy and
inexpensive. And if you discover that you
have a problem, the Health Department can
provide free consultation and if needed, help
you find a contractor to correct the prob-
lem.
Radon is a naturally-occurring, invisible
and odorless radioactive gas. It is dispersed
in outdoor air, but can reach harmful levels
when trapped in buildings. By taking simple
steps to test your home for radon and fix if
necessary, this health hazard can be avoided.
The Health Department of Northwest
Michigan is mandated by the Michigan
Public Health Code to promote wellness, pre-
vent disease, provide quality healthcare,
address health problems of vulnerable popu-
lations, and protect the environment for the
residents and visitors of Antrim, Charlevoix,
Emmet, and Otsego counties.
For additional information about radon or
radon testing, telephone Scott Johnston,
Environmental Health Sanitarian, at 989-
732-1794 or visit www.nwhealth.org

Department will now offer extended hours on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., as well as
office hours on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesday and
Friday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
OMH Medical Group Pediatrics is located at 829 N. Center
Avenue, Suite 130, in Gaylord. Appointments with Luis
Collazo, MD; Steve Kaufmann, MD; or Siriwan Dr. Ming
Mingbunjerdsuk, MD, may be made by calling (989) 731-7930.
Established patients may also use the OMH Medical Group
Patient Portal via Otsego Memorial Hospitals website,
MyOMH.org, to schedule appointments.
Gaylord The Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH) Medical
Group is offering Pediatric Flu Clinics from Monday, October
10, through Friday, October 14. The cost of the vaccination is
$29 and may be covered by your insurance plan. The clinics
will be held in the OMH Medical Group Pediatrics
Department, located at 829 N. Center Avenue, Suite 130, in
Gaylord, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Established patients with OMH Medical Group Family
Practice or Pediatrics should call (989) 731-7930 to set up an
appointment on the day of a clinic to receive their injection.
All age groups are at risk for contracting the flu, especially
high risk groups such as the elderly, very young children,
pregnant women, and people with pre-existing health condi-
tions. The seasonal flu shot is approved for all people age 6
months and older, and the OMH Medical Group encourages
parents to take their children to their primary care providers
office for their flu injections.
The flu is highly contagious, and spread through coughing,
sneezing, and nasal secretions, said Lisa Stier, OMH Infection
Prevention Coordinator. Flu germs can live on surfaces for a
long time. Getting the vaccine early can help protect you
throughout the whole season.

Three Great Reasons to visit East Jordan this Saturday, October 15th
By Jim Akans
Dr. Meghan Costello has joined the professional staff at
Saks Wellness Center as of October 17th. Dr. Costello is a
recent graduate from the Northwestern College of
Chiropractic in Minnesota, and looks forward to applying her
education, expertise and experience in assisting her patients
at Saks Wellness Center.
Dr. Costello relates, I think this is a very good fit. I am
excited about helping patients to relieve chronic conditions,
and in learning how to live healthier, happier lives.
Offering chiropractic care, nutritional counseling, massage
therapy, laser therapy and a just introduced revolutionary
vibration exercise therapy process, the team at Saks Wellness
Center in Gaylord has been devoted to assisting their clients
in achieving a lifestyle of health and well being for over 35
years.
Dr. Costello is originally from the Roscommon area, and a
worked in the chiropractic field in California after completing
here studies and internships in Minnesota. Inspired by Saks
Wellness Centers holistic treatment approach, she looks
forward to pursuing her career back in the Michigan area.
The philosophy at Saks Wellness Center is to not just treat
the symptoms, but to look at the body, lifestyle and nutrition-
al aspects as a whole, she notes. I particularly enjoy treating
womens hormonal concerns and addressing general nutri-
tion. That ties into chiropractic treatments in that by getting
the body to function better as a whole, chiropractic treat-
ments are more effective.
She points out that improving diet does not necessarily
equate to a more expensive way to eat.
We work within each persons budget requirements, Dr.
Costello explains, and identify items that can make the
biggest difference to their health and well being. A simple tip
I often give to patients is that when shopping; try to stay along
the perimeter of the grocery store. Typically, that is where the
healthier food items are placed, and often there isnt a need to
go into the center of the store where processed, and less
healthy foods are usually located.
Dr. Costello and the entire staff at Saks Wellness are dedi-
cated to assisting Northern Michigan residents in relieving
chronic conditions, learn about the benefits of healthy eating,
and how to pursue a healthier, happier lifestyle. For further
information, visit www.sakswellnesscneter.com or call (989)
732-7000.
