Shannon Pluhowlky Has Historic Masters Win at World Womens Championships

By Lucas Wiseman - USBC HONG KONG - Team USA's Shannon Pluhowsky of Kettering, Ohio, became the first woman in the history of the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Women's Championships to earn four gold medals in one tournament as she claimed the Masters match play title. Powered by a 300 game and a 299 game, Pluhowsky defeated Singapore's Daphne Tan, 3-1, in the best-of-five championship match at Hong Kong Bowling City. Pluhowsky, who also won gold medals in doubles, trios and team event, took the opening game of the match 300-226 on the Paris lane condition before losing 238-219 in Game 2 on the Seoul lane condition. When she returned to the Paris pattern, she started with another string of strikes - this time getting 11 in a row before leaving a 10 pin on the final shot for a 299-234 victory. She then took the title with a 223191 victory in Game 4. "I didn't realize I was going to strike for days on the Paris pattern," Pluhowsky said. "I just broke that lane down the same way I had been and got really lucky that the carry was good on that lane. The coaches kept the mood light and that really helped, too." The victory capped off a stellar week by Team USA as it brought home four gold medals and three bronze medals. The victories in the doubles, trios and team events were the first since the 1987 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. "It has been a really long week and a lot of games, but I'm excited about what we've been able to accomplish," Pluhowsky said. "It's been a long time since the United States has been dominating at this event, and we wanted to get that feeling back." Two other U.S. players took part in the Masters competition, which featured the top 16 players in the all-events standings. J o a n Ta y l o r s Te n P i n R a p . . . .
Once a year I like to create awareness of collegiate bowling programs and the many scholarships available for our young bowlers. I discovered a new site: collegescholarships.org, which lists many collegiate sports and their available funds, in addition to academic and other types of rewards. Starting with bowling scholarships mainly for young women, The NCAA is the largest athletic association in the U.S. If you are good enough to bowl for a Division I or Division II school you may be able to squeeze some scholarship dollars out of the programs. There are 43 member schools that offer Div 1 or Div 2 Womens Bowling and only 2 schools that offer scholarship bowling for Men, but there are plenty of mens college bowling teams. It also refers to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), which has many bowling programs. Another association is the NAIA. A number of very good bowling programs exist, including favorites Pikeville College, Lindenwood University, and Lindsey Wilson College. You will see these otherwise unknown colleges delivering enviable showings in competition. A good place to start research would be at the top schools with bowling programs: Wichita State, University of Nebraska, New Jersey City, Vanderbilt, and University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. The USBC lists many national scholarships such as: Pepsi USBC Youth Championships is an annual United States Bowling Congress-Pepsi Sponsored international youth bowling competition at which over 300,000 scholarship dollars are offered at the state/zone level. The USBC Junior Gold Championships compete for more than $70,000 in college scholarships. Enrollment in an undergraduate program at an accredited college/university is required. High School students are not eligible. You may also contact the youth director at your local bowling center to get current information regarding how to enter the Pepsi USBC Youth Championships. Gift for Life Scholarships honor the heroes of September 11, 2001 and all who regularly risk danger to save the lives of others. Scholarship amount is $1,000 and applicants must be USBC high school students with a GPA of at least 2.0. Two of the twelve awards are set aside each year for a son and a daughter of police, fire and emergency rescue personnel. Selection is also based on financial need. Who's Who Sports Edition All Academic Bowling Team is an honorary team comprised of USBC youth selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship award based on community service and academic achievement. USBC members published in the Who's Who Among American High School Students - Sports Edition are eligible to compete. The Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarships recognize 5 USBC youth members based on academic achievement, community service and financial need. This award is for $5,000. Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow Scholarship is annually presented to a male high school senior or undergraduate student who competes in the sport of bowling. Selection criteria include academic achievement, community involvement and distinguished bowling performances on the local, state and national levels. Award is for $1500 renewable for up to 3 years. Applicant must be a USBC member in good standing and have a GPA of 2.5. Local associations also offer scholarships and its never too early to think about applying. Go to their websites: mcba-njbowling.com/applications/ScholApplic.pdf for the MCUSBC BA and the womens association has: www.morriscountywba.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/scholarship_application.pdf Some of the leading colleges offering bowling scholarships are: Wichita State, Texas Southern, University of Florida and Vincennes University. A little research goes a long way and can return a host of scholarship dollars to you. Start now! *********************** Here we have two ends of the spectrum: one bowler had his first 800 series but has yet to bowl a 300 game. The other saw his twenty-first 300 game. James Westergaard saw his first 800 series, an 820, this after 25 years of bowling. It was in the Monday Night Early Birds at Rockaway Lanes. He rolled 242, 279-299 (that darned 7-pin) with a Storm Prodigy fitted by Ken Yokobosky of Pro Image Pro Shop. His previous high sanctioned series was a 790 and that was 20 years ago. His twin sons, Nicholas and Jimmy were on hand. While they marveled at the big series, they both gagged when Dad missed a perfect game. Nicholas already has a 300 game, posted at age 16. Jimmy won his division in the recent Elite Invitational county tournament at Hanover Lanes. James had done the math and knew he had a chance at an 800. I knew I needed the first (strike) in the tenth frame. Once I got that I was relieved, thinking of an 800 more than a 300, so I rushed the last shot in the third game. He has chosen to receive a ring from the US Bowling Congress. He enjoys two leagues, both at Rockaway Lanes. Bob Doc Russano rolled his twenty-first perfect game. The greatest thing, Russano said, is that I turned 70 in August. So this is a great accomplishment. Ive been bowling some PBA Senior tournaments as a Super Super Senior and I joke that Im Editor/Publisher - Dan McDonough the only one in my age category who Pat McDonough - 1967-1996 has his own teeth! That stands to reaCirculation Manager Editorial Assistant son, as Doc is a retired dentist. Henry Allen Immaculatta D'Elia It was a fluke that Bob got into Contributing Writers bowling in the first place. In his Chuck Pezzano George Faytok Joan Taylor freshman year at NY University he Al Smetana Larry Diebner John Jowdy needed to take a required six months Pat McDonough Vince Albrech Joe Rizzi of physical education. He chose For information regarding advertising, bowling because he thought it would subscriptions, or editorial content call: be easy, and shot a 165 his very first game. He bowled in leagues with a guy named Mark Roth. His neighbor Fax: (201) 865-6246 was another guy, named Joe Torre. E-mail - Sportsreporter@mail.com Bob works at fundraising for the Sports Reporter Coccia Foundation at Montclair P.O. Box 1491, Secaucus, NJ 07094 State University and bowls two nights a week.

Idle bowling thoughts. A team's lineup positions can be very important. All-time great Parker Bohn III feels that your leadoff individual should be a deadly spare shooter, one that can mark when it counts most and one that can spark the spirit of a team. The anchor or final bowler in the lineup should be your best all-around bowler, but not necessarily the one with the highest average. A top anchor can hit the pocket when the pressure is on, is a good solid spare bowler, but one better known for coming up with that strike or two when needed in a tight game. There is no such thing as an easy spare, unless it's the one you don't have to face because you got a strike. Did you know that up until 1994, from 1958, pro bowlers had to follow strict limits on the length of hair, pony tails, braids and beards. In the more than 50 years that pro bowling has been on TV, the happening causing the most comment was not a big win, not a particular match, not a perfect game, but Mark Roth's first ever TV conversion of the 7-10 split. You hear about the 300 games rolled in bowling. But a real rarity in bowling is a 291 game, and the rarest of them all in the upper category is a 292 game. Bowling does have some power to make people much more attentive to dates. The same people who make medical and business matter appointments mere days in advance often enter bowling tournaments two years prior to the competition.

The move to Texas by most integers in bowling will take time, particularly such attractions as the International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum, but it has to be one of the most forward thinking bowling ideas in the history of the sport. The more you study bowling history the more you realize that the negative of bowling has been expanded and repeated much more than the more prevalent positives of the sport---at every level. Many long years ago John Petraglia was asked who he saw as the future stars. His selections were Parker Bohn III, Dave Ozio, Amleto Monacelli, Pete Weber, Brian Voss and Del Ballard. That's what you call a super crystal ball. All became top stars and all have been elected to the PBA Hall of Fame. The good old days were when you were pretty sure you could bowl your weight. When you discuss smooth bowlers, the name of the late Joe Joseph comes to mind most often. For a fairly big man, he moved to the line with all the grace and balance of dancing legend Fred Astaire. One big difference, Joseph carried a heavy bowling ball, not a light hat or cane. The head pin of a bowling setup probably has more strange remarks directed to it than any other inanimate object in the world. Any league secretary or tournament director will tell you that the people who know all the bowling rules and let you know they do are not nearly as bad as the bowlers who think they know all the rules.
