Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law

About RGSOIPL
It is said that, Law is organic. The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL) moves several steps
ahead to say that-Legal education is organic too. As a brainchild of Mr. Vinod Gupta (former CEO of InfoUSA and life fellow of IIT Kharagpur) the school was setup in 2006. It is the only Law school in the country functioning under the IIT system. The school is located within the campus of IIT Kharagpur, 120 km from the city of Kolkata. The School has an academic collaboration with George Washington University Law School, USA. RGSOIPL has the unique feature of imparting traditional legal education along with contemporary law courses suited to match the demands of a global economy. The School presently offers Three Year full time residential LL.B. Program (Honours in Intellectual Property Law), recognized by the Bar Council of India. The school equips the students to inculcate the intricacies of traditional law subjects and thereby capitalize this knowledge to excel in advanced technology law courses including IP subjects. The school has been engineered to embody excellence in techno-legal education. The Law School is functioning from its own state of the art campus from the academic year 2008-09. The LL.B. course curriculum includes a study of 35 courses over a period of three years (including elective courses). In addition, moot courts, projects and seminars in each semester provide hands-on research experience thereby developing and enhancing pleading skills. Every student has to appear for a comprehensive Viva Voce at the end of second and third year. A compulsory dissertation in the final semester is a must to graduate. Thus, the young scholars acquire knowledge that prepares them astutely to enter the legal world. The school has been a host to several legal luminaries including Honble Mr. Justice U.C. Banerjee, Honble Mr. Justice A.K.Ganguli, and Honble Mr. Justice P.K.Ray who have delivered lectures to the students on various occasions. Guest lectures by legal experts, partners of reputed law firms, IP experts and erudite lawyers ensure that the students are exposed to the technicalities of legal practice. Prof.N.L.Mitra, Advisor to the Law School brings with him four decades of legal education experience to design the curriculum and to impart hands on education.

Moot Court
Simulations of appellate court proceedings, also known as "moot court" and "mock Supreme Court," are widely utilized around the world as an educational tool. The aim of a Moot Court is to improve the oral advocacy skills of students. Moot court is a concept to bridge that gap of class room and court room and in that it has to reinvent itself with the changing environment of real life to infuse the necessary skills to make theory relevant to practice and to gain insight from practice to strengthen the theoretical frame work. Moot Court activities is a prominent thrust area of the Law Programme of RGSOIPL. The School is equipped with a state of the art Moot Court Hall dedicated for Moot activities. RGSOIPL conducted the first Technology Law Moot Court in 2008 where teams from all over India participated. The event was rated as a frontline moot court competition. The students of the School participated in various moot court activities including international competitions like the Jessup Moot Court Competition of USA. The Law School has its own Moot Court Hall equipped designed to accommodate 180 students, retiring rooms and recording facilities. Law Library
Law Library is the central nervous system of any Law School. A law library is a library designed to assist law students, attorneys, judges, and their law clerks in finding the legal resources necessary to correctly determine the state of the law. Most law schools around the world will also have a law library, or in some universities, at least a section of the university library devoted to law. The RGSOIPL Law School has its own law library in its premise which is spacious and functional. The current Law Library has a collection of books and journals in every branch of law and is adding constantly to its content. The Library is well equipped with a documentation centre and study cubicles. The Library is part of the Schools Wi fi system and is headed by an Assistant Librarian and staff. The Library is open during the school hours and also extends to additional hours in the evening. The library also has digital resources like Westlaw, LexisNexis, Hein Online, Justor, Cambridge Law Journal, Manupatra, Ebrary, Springer e-books, Elsevier, Wiley and various IP online resources. The Law library subscribes to various legal databases and gearing to host free access to legal materials through a project from AustLII in the coming months.

Microsoft Centre of Excellence of Intellectual Property Research and Technology Policy
With the phenomenal growth in the Information Technology sector there is a need for the protection of the intangible value that is created. Intellectual property rights act as both a safeguard and an incentive for the various entities that contribute to this growing pool of innovation. It is essential to provide this sector with the assurance that their intellectual products are adequately secured and protected from threats of misuse. To this end, India needs judges and lawyers who have requisite expertise in both law and technology so that they are able to address the multifarious issues that arise with respect to IP protection in this sector. One important method of achieving this is through the provision of specialized training in the area of science and its interface with the law, especially intellectual property rights law. In pursuance of the aforesaid objective the Microsoft Intellectual Property Rights Scholarship Program was launched at the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IIT Kharagpur in 2009. The Program aims to recognize academic excellence and establish a knowledge bank in the area of intellectual property. It is envisaged that such scholarships would create a ripple effect, not only among the students in law schools but in the wider legal fraternity and society and create a talent pool of lawyers in this fast evolving area of law. To this end, Microsoft awarded scholarships to five students from the school and also started a Young Faculty Fellowship Program in 2009. A Microsoft Centre of Excellence was set-up to facilitate the program. Currently the centre administers the Young Faculty Fellowship to four faculty members and one award for Continuing legal Education programme aimed for conducting Legal Development Programme in emerging areas of Intellectual Property rights in the field of technology. The centre organized a one day intensive workshop on Emerging Intellectual Property Trends in Information Technology on October 22, 2009. The workshop deliberated on the themes of Patenting of Software, Online Copyright Issues and Legal Issues in Domain Names.

Recruitments @ RGSOIPL
Training & Placement Cell (TPC)
TPC acts as a transparent and credible interface between the prospective employer and the student. TPC 2010 has nine student members and three supervising faculty members. Generally the formal placement week is held in December every year, however, TPC may also follow placements on rolling basis. This helps the firms to recruit students without the constraints of time and market conditions. Last year, TPC successfully placed the pioneer batch of the law graduates of the School. This year it hopes to strengthen its relationship with former employers and seeks to forge new relationships with potential employers. The employers are encouraged to communicate their interest by filling up the Job Notification Form and mailing it to TPC. They are encouraged to visit the campus for recruitment. Additionally, the video conferencing facility is also available in the School. TPC also arranges for sending the shortlisted students to the employers address for interviews in case the employer is unable to visit the campus and wishes to interview students in person.

Places to stay
TPC facilitates the stay of employers in the IIT Kharagpur guesthouses that are well equipped with all the modern amenities.

Recruitment Process
The recruitment process followed by the School is as follows:
n

The School invites companies to the campus for placements. The companies express their interest in visiting the campus for recruitment by sending the Job Notification Form within the given deadline. The companies conduct pre-placement presentation or send detailed profile descriptions. The companies are slotted by the students on the basis of the profile offered and salary offered. The resumes of the interested candidates are sent to the firm in advance, on request. The firm sends its shortlist to the Law School. The firm visits the campus on the given slot and conducts the recruitment process. If not, then the firm can ask for a telephonic interview/video conferencing.

The Death of Socrates, by Jacques Louis David (1787) A system of morality which is based on relative emotional values is a mere illusion, a thoroughly vulgar conception which has nothing sound in it and nothing true. Socrates RGSOIPLs Socratic Society is an open forum to extend the scholarship and learning experience beyond the classroom exercise and bookish perception. The Society, a peer group of the faculty and students, endeavours to add pristine dimensions to the open-ended issues of, and about law. The intricate issues are examined from interdisciplinary dimensions of economics, politics, natural science, philosophy and sociology. Following the Socratic tradition, this scholastic group breaks down a given problem into a series of rudimentary questions; the debate gradually distils the answers. The Society invites eminent scholars from various disciplines to reflect on the current issues. This brings for the academic community of RGSOIPL opportunities to broaden their horizon through interaction and exchange of views and experiences with a community of scholars from diversified academic and social orientation.
