First Reading -- The LORD said to Cyrus, his anointed, "I am the LORD, there is no other" (Isaiah 45:1, 4-6). Psalm -- Give the Lord glory and honor (Psalm 96). Second Reading -- Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians: We thank God always for all of you (1 Thessalonians 1:15b). Gospel -- Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's (Matthew 22:15-21). QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK Adults: What can I do this week to bring Christ to everyone that I meet? Children: What is one thing I can do to show my friends that God loves them? 42 days before implementation on November 27, 2011 WORKSHOP: SESSION 4 Our fourth session on the Mass focuses on the Profession of Faith, our shared statement of what we all hold dear. We begin with the change from We believe to I believe. Well briefly survey the history of the Nicene Creed, and the difficulty of compiling many beliefs into one statement. We come together from a variety of different backgrounds, yet we profess a unified belief with others. Our shared identity transcends the forces that divide us. Think of it as many pieces in a large mosaic or distinct trees that form a forest. Well review the revised translation of the Creed. If words like consubstantial and incarnate seem strange, the session will help you learn and understand the meaning of these words, and to say them with other people. The words are unusualwe dont use them any other way. But they describe Jesus Christ, unique and unusual. Well

29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 16, 2011 IN GOD ALONE Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that "I am the LORD," and that "there is none besides me" (Isaiah 45:6). Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion--that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. 29o DOMINGO EN EL TIEMPO ORDINARIO - 16 de octubre, 2011 SLO EN DIOS Isaas nos habla hoy de Ciro, el rey de Persia, ungido del Seor. STEWARDSHIP: THE ROAD TAKEN Week after week, we are offered a choice to declare to others and to our God whom we belong to--the small god of money and possessions, or the great God whom Jesus called Abba (Daddy or Papa in Aramaic). Some of us drop into the basket what we think is good enough, or what we will never miss, or whatever is in our pocket. How about a different approach? For every financial blessing first give thanks, whether for a paycheck, an allowance, investment interest, bonus, or even a lottery win. Choose a portion and share it with others: half to the Church, and half to good cause you favor. In gratitude for God's over-

whelming love, we give these "first fruits" rather than what's left over after we've done what we want. Modern research shows that people who give generously tend to live happier and longer lives. So become a grateful giver and a true steward of God's constant blessings. LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW Did you know that the Vatican has a yearly operating budget less than half the budget of a major university? God's work--in the parish, the diocese, and around the world-depends on us. Is your giving generous, or the least you can spare? CO-RESPONSABILIDAD: EL CAMINO QUE TOMEMOS Semana tras semana se nos brinda la oportunidad de declarar a quin pertenecemos, al dios minsculo del dinero y las posesiones o al gran Dios a quien Jess llam Abba, que en arameo (el idioma de Jess) quiere decir pap o papato. Adems, dar con gratitud cambia nuestra manera de pensar sobre la vida y nos hace verdaderamente responsables por las constantes bendiciones que recibimos de Dios. LA CO-RESPONSABILIDAD VIVIDA AHORA Sabas que el Vaticano tiene un presupuesto anual para sus operaciones que es menos de la mitad del de una universidad grande? Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign, to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the young hearts of our sons and daughters the fire of zeal of souls. Make them eager to spread your kingdom upon earth. Keep our present religious and seminarians healthy, both physically and spiritually. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. Page 4

Hannibal House Board: Thanks to the Caballeros de Coln, the Knights of Columbus, the donors of money and items for the silent auction, the four local wineries and Mr. & Mrs. Jose Villarreal for offering their lovely home for the Fr. YOUTH DAY October 16, Sunday Youth Day is our largest gathering of High School Youth in the Diocese of Fresno. Sponsored by the Office of Ministries Youth and Young Adult Office, we seek to foster in our young people what an amazing and privileged place they occupy in the life of the Catholic Church. Last Year nearly 1,400 youth and their chaperones participated in Youth Day. The event offers great speakers and opportunities for prayer and worship. This is a required off-site diocesan event for 3rd Year Confirmation candidates.
