Everyone wants to know the local fire department is there if needed. While help will always be on the way, it may not be coming from your local fire department. Wheatland County would like residents, especially those in Carseland and similar areas, to know this. Because most firefighters, especially those in rural areas, are volunteers it can sometimes be difficult to guarantee 24-hour service from your local department. However, all fire departments are scheduled to help each other: a crew will show up, there is just not a guaranteed response time. Gerald Skibinsky, manager of protective services for Wheatland County invited Luis Delgado, President of the Strathmore Rural and Carseland Fire Associations, and Don Shelley, the interim Fire Chief in Carseland to speak to council about fire protection in Carseland. When a call to dispatch the fire department is made in Carseland, both their firefighters and Strathmore Rural Fire Department, SFRD, get the call. Carseland does have 13 dedicated members who are eager to respond, but during the daytime hours it may not always be one of those 13 who are able to, which is why the SFRD are also called. Its no different than any hamlet in the county boundaries, they are all facing the same problem, said Shelley. He continued to say that its unfortunate there are not a lot of people in Carseland who work nights and would be able to respond to a call during the day. All three men kept reiterating the fact that there is fire coverage, but that it may take some time to get there. I think we as a municipality can guarantee that coverage, said Wheatland County Reeve Ben Armstrong, regarding 24/7 response times. He said he cant say an individual fire department can guarantee a 24/7 response time, but as municipality 24/7 coverage is guaranteed. There is also outside mutual support from other counties. For those living in an area like Carseland: if an emergency happens during the day, remember-help is on the way.

Many people may have pantries with cans, or boxes of food collecting dust, but are unwilling to toss them away. The Strathmore Municipal Library is offering a solution for those unwanted cans and boxes with its Food for Fines initiative. We wanted to do something special to celebrate Canadian Library Month, so this month we decided to do a food for fines drive, said Carmen Lefebvre, Assistant Director of Library Services. The way it works is from Oct. 11 to Oct. 31 any of our patrons can come into the library and they can bring any non-perishable items. For every one non-perishable item they bring well waive $2 of their (overdue) fines, Food for Fines is something that other libraries
have done for years, and this year the staff at the Strathmore Library decided it was their turn to try it out. Its a really great way for libraries to support their local community, to support their local food bank. Its our way to give to the community, said Lefebvre. Heres a good way to clear out your kitchen cupboards and this way also pay off your fines as well. Lefebvre said the library would also be collecting donations from anyone who just wishes to donate throughout the month. There will be a bin set up just inside the doors for people to drop the items into. As with any sort of food drive, the library is looking for non-perishable items such as canned and dry goods. If the Food for Fines is successful Lefebvre said the library may consider carrying it over.
Carmen Lefebvre, Assistant Director of Library Services holds up a few of the items placed in the bin at the Strathmore municipal Library as a part of their Food for Fines drive taking place. The drive began on Oct. 11, and is scheduled to end at the end of the month. Lefebvre said if things go well they may extend it.

Though she wasnt crowned, Jessica Williams from Arrowwood was still full of smiles from having had the opportunity to compete for a crown. Williams took part in the 2012 Calgary Stampede queen and princess competition, and had made it as one of the top six finalists. Just being a part of it in general is just amazing. All the things we got to do, and all the people we got to meet. Even just this part was life changing Id say, said Williams, after the royal trio was announced on Oct 2. Williams, 20, always knew she would end up competing some day. Growing up on a farm and always being with horses has just always been a dream. So it wasnt a matter of if I was going to enter, it was when. I always knew I was going to try anyway,
said Williams. I had no idea what to expect. I thought I would just enter and see where that takes me. Williams said one of the most valuable lessons she has learned from taking part in the process was to be herself. The toughest thing of the whole competition was her first speaking competition, which she said was because it was the first time being in front of the judges, and all of the other girls competing were there. She said she found it a little nerve wracking. The girls were kept busy nearly every day with riding competitions, formal dinners, speeches and other royalty preparation events. The competition may be over but Williams already has her sights set on being crowned next year. For now though she is happy to have a bit of a break.

Strathmore has been celebrating its centennial throughout the year, with the final event, the Fall Gala, coming up on Oct. 15. As part of the centennial it is also important to recognize those who may also be celebrating. Jessie Campbell is Strathmores oldest known woman, celebrated her 101st birthday this past April. Members of the centennial committee presented Campbell with a vase and flowers as a way of saying congratulations for reaching 101. The vase was made by Mark Gibeau. Campbell originally hails from Glasgow, Scotland and came to Strathmore 20 years ago. My son and his wife were here and thats why I came out, said Campbell, who wanted to be clear it was to live near them, not with them. I love Strathmore, its the same as the little town in Scotland that we lived. Campbell loves to fill her days walking, and said she can walk for miles, which is one way she has kept herself in good physical shape. She has been a resident of the Wheatland Lodge for a number of years now and said she loves it, and that it is a wonderful place. Councillor and Centennial Committee member Bob Sobol, said the committee would love to have Campbell attend the gala as a special guest of honour, but unfortunately her health will prevent her from being able to attend the event.

The Boob Tour had people laughing until it hurt on Oct. 7, when they were at the Civic Centre. James Uloth is the organizer of the comedy tour, which raises money for all types of cancer. Its a comedy orientated and its not 90 minutes of boob jokes or anything like that, its pretty much regular standup, said Uloth. When I was 16 my best friends mom died. Its (breast cancer) such a long disease, it took her about three years before she finally passed away. He said he always wanted to do something to help raise funds for cancer while incorporating his comedy. He would sell stickers after his shows, which he said didnt amount to much at the end of the year. Uloth decided to take that money
and build a tour because he knew he could raise more money and make a difference that way. In the first year of the tour he was able to raise over $100,000 for cancer research and has just entered into the second year now. The Strathmore event was really great, the ladies there really went the extra mile and decorated so seamlessly. It was two different relay teams who participated in it, and I was just so happy to be working with them and just so happy to see the results they produced, said Uloth. We had such a great time in Strathmore and theyre already asking for next years date and I think were going to move it a bit further into November. The Boob tour has raised nearly $100,000 in less than a year traveling around entertaining crowds with proceeds going to cancer. The Strathmore crowd was in stitches for two straight hours. All of our events we look at as annual, unfortunately cancer doesnt quit and neither do we, so every year the show makes its changes and its a brand new show pretty much every year, said Uloth.
We come to town and grow it and hopefully get a whole bunch of new people out. Tickets are usually available about two months before a show, and the website www.theboobtour.com will have all the info for next year. Uloth said it is important to make sure the word the is included in the website domain name or people may find a whole different kind of boob tour they werent looking for.

Laughter is really the best medicine, but sometimes comedians can offended people by the way they go about getting that laugh. Strathmore resident Cory Johnson is in the running to be Canadas Next Top Comic, and his version of clean comedy will have you busting a gut without wondering if you should be laughing. The thing about my comedy is its a bit more tame than most of the other comedians. Just about every other comedian uses swear words, or talk about sexual innuendo, or racist jokes. I pride myself in having clean comedy that even kids can listen to, said Johnson. Why I want to be more involved in comedy (is) its the opportunity to provide people with something they can laugh at and not be offended, but they also learn at the same time. Thats what makes my routine pretty neat is people actually learn. Johnson is a motivational speaker, a record breaking Olympic athlete, and the Kiwanis club governor-elect for Western Canada to name a few of his roles. He also has cerebral palsy, and his favourite, and famous, line is, Im not drunk, Im disabled. His comedy focuses on some of the encounters he has had, such as people asking his wife if he is allowed to use a fork, or a number of other misconceptions people have when he is out in public. He said a lot of people listening to his comedy may have had the same perception, and by getting a chance to listen to his routine they may learn. Johnsons son Brendon Berry was also an integral part of helping create the perfect routine. So he was doing his routine in the kitchen and he was doing it pretty fast, so it was sort of hard to comprehend, said Berry. After, I thought and I said, hey Cory if you slow down a bit and give the audience a chance to comprehend, then maybe youll get somewhere. It really helped because if I would have done it myself, and not practiced in front of him, then I think it wouldnt have went as well, said Johnson. A few weeks ago Johnson performed in Cal-

gary to try to get a spot in the semi-finals for Canadas Next Top Comic, and now he needs the support of the community to help get him into the finals. By going to the Canadas Next Top Comic website people can listen to his five minute skit, and vote for Johnson. The person with the most votes wins and I think theres also a wildcard spot. Its something where I need as much support as I can get, said Johnson. The comedian with the most votes, and one wildcard, from each city will be picked to take part in the finals in Toronto on November. The prize money is $10,000 and the crown as Canadas Next Top Comic. The winner will also have some of their skits on the radio, and Johnson said he thinks there is the possibility of signing an agent out of it. To be honest if I won it, I would probably use it to maybe get an agent and start looking at the possibilities of doing this more full time, said Johnson. Its something that I really want to do because it will help me with my comic career, but also it will help me with my business. A lot of people when they book me for speeches, they worry that its going to be a really serious speech. They dont necessarily want to book somebody who is not funny. Voting is open until Oct. 31 and people can go to canadasnexttopcomic.com to cast their vote. Cory Johnson can be found under Calgarys heading.
On Sept. 23 the Hilton family had a hot supper to be delivered by the Praeker girls in their canola field. Dane Hilton bid for the dinner during an auction held as part of a fundraiser to raise money for the Limb family. In the summer the Limb family lost their home to a fire in the Crowfoot Community. The community had had a fundraiser for the Limb family. They had it one evening, so it was like a social one evening, a fundraiser at the Crowfoot Community (Centre). We werent able to be there so our son Dane and his wifeon behalf of Hilton Ventures they attended, said Lynne Hilton. One of the things I bid on was for the Praeker family to deliver a hot meal out to the field for supper time, said Dane Hilton. At 5:30p.m. the combines shut down. Everyone was sitting in their lawn chair waiting for dinner to arrive when someone from Dominoes showed up with pizza and pop, saying the Praeker vehicle had broken down it was just going to be pizza for dinner. After that the Praekers arrived and so did a whole bunch of community members and they put out a huge spread and we had a wonderful evening, said Lynne. I guess that is the real special part of it, we took time out of our busy days to gather and spend some time together. That family time is so important to all of us. Harvest season can be stressful and she said everyone was happy to have the time to sit, relax, and enjoy each others company.

Winterizing your home
Its that time of year again when we dig out the snow shovels and get ready for that first snow fall, but there are other things you should do to get your home ready for winter. Clean gutters - Once the leaves fall, remove them and other debris from your homes gutters, by hand with a scraper or spatula. Clogged drains can form ice dams, in which water backs up, freezes and causes water to seep into the house. As youre hosing out your gutters, look for leaks and misaligned pipes. Also, make sure the downspouts are carrying water away from the houses foundation, where it could cause flooding or other water damage. Block leaks - One of the best ways to winterize your home is to simply block obvious leaks around your house, both inside and out. First, find the leaks: On a breezy day, walk around inside holding a lit incense stick to the most common drafty areas: recessed lighting, window and doorframes, electrical outlets. Purchase door sweeps to close spaces under exterior doors, and caulk. Outlet gaskets can easily be installed in electrical outlets that share a homes outer walls, where cold air often enters. Outside, seal leaks with weather-resistant caulk. For brick areas, use masonry sealer, which will better stand up to freezing and thawing. Even if its a small crack, its worth sealing up. Insulate - Another thing that does cost a little money but, you do get the money back quickly by adding insulation to the existing insulation in your attic. The rule of thumb on whether you need to add insulation is if you go into the attic and you can see the ceiling joists you know you dont have enough. Check the furnace - First, turn your furnace on now, to make sure its working, before the coldest weather descends. A strong, odd, short-lasting smell is natural when firing up the furnace in the autumn; simply open windows to dissipate it. But if the smell lasts a long time, shut down the furnace and call a professional. Its a good idea to have furnaces cleaned and tuned annually. Wrap pipes - A burst pipe caused by a winter freeze is a nightmare. Prevent it before Jack Frost sets his grip. Before freezing nights hit, make certain that the water to your hose bibs is shut off inside your house (via a turnoff valve), and that the lines are drained. Next, go looking for other pipes that arent insulated, or that pass through unheated spaces in your home, pipes that run through crawlspaces, basements or garages. Wrap them with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation, available at hardware stores. If youre really worried about a pipe freezing, you can first wrap it with heating tape, which is basically an electrical cord that emits heat.

Standing up to criminals
Kevin SorenSon M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report Many of you are contacting me to express your support for our Conservative governments omnibus anti-crime Bill C-10, the Safe Streets and Communities Act. This Bill presents nine anti-crime measures that Parliament has debated in the past but has yet to pass into law. We are targeting drug traffickers, child sex predators, and the most dangerous and violent young offenders. Bill C-10 will institute mandatory minimum sentences for specific drug and sexual assault offences and curtail the use of conditional sentences; strengthen pre-trial custody and sentencing for repeat and violent young offenders. As your Member of Parliament, over the past ten years I regularly heard from you urging the federal government to make the changes we recommend in Bill C-10. Many of our local Church groups, the Alberta Womens Institute, victims of crime, and outraged citizens have filled my filing cabinets and spoken out at Town Halls and Constituency Satellite Office Meetings demanding protection from the perpetrators of the crimes listed in Bill C-10. In Parliament, the nine bills that are contained in C-10 have been debated on 52 separate days, including 250 speeches. They have also been debated in committee in 58 separate meetings, hearing 295 witnesses. Over the past several years, political foot-dragging and whining about the rights of criminals by all the Opposition parties has delayed or obstructed each of these nine pieces of legislation from becoming law during the minority parliaments and during the last Liberal majority parliament. These parties all talk the talk on the campaign trail but theyre not serious about implementing strong measures to protect communities and prevent further victims of the criminals targeted by Bill C-10. The political frustration of the Opposition explains much of their objection to Bill C-10 they know that our Conservative majority will complete the work called for in Bill C-10. I was an early speaker in the second Reading Debate on C-10 in the House of Commons. My job was to describe the grizzly sexual offences committed against helpless innocent children and the specifics of the increase in sentences for those found guilty of committing these violent and even heinous offences. Bill C-10 includes measures to prevent trafficking, abuse and exploitation of immigrants; helps victims of terrorism sue the perpetrators; ends house arrest or home jail for serious property and other crimes involving violence; and more. While there is strong political support for Bill C-10s measures in our constituency, many other ridings across Canada (particularly in cities besieged by illicit drug-funded organized crime and gang-crime) share our view. It is high time for the Opposition parties to finally take action to protect Canadian citizens by supporting Bill C-10. RCMP Briefs
Fatal motor vehicle collision On Oct. 4, at 10:50 a.m., Strathmore RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 560 and Range Road 282 near Langdon. The investigation revealed that a small car was eastbound on Highway 560 with a tractor-trailer unit following. The car made a right hand turn onto Range Road 282, then turned left back onto the roadway, and into the path of the oncoming tractor trailer. The occupant of the car, a 20-year-old male from Calgary, died at the scene. The driver of the semi truck was uninjured. Alcohol is not suspected as being a factor in the collision and while the investigation remains ongoing, there are no charges pending.

Conversation required
To the Editor For nearly a decade the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) and AltaLink LLP have gone to great lengths to keep the public out of the conversation about the need for new transmission lines in Alberta. AltaLink went so far as to register as a lobbyist for the passage of Bill-50. Bill-50 subsequently passed as the Electric Statues Amendment Act eliminated the publics right to question the need for new transmission lines. Now Alison Redford has been elected as our new Premier and the conversation about transmission lines is back. Will Premier Redford restore the publics right to be part of the conversation? This is a question that has far reaching implications for all Albertans. Since deregulation of the electricity system Albertans have been gouged by ever increasing [extra charges] on their electricity bills. The extra charges have prompted jokes claiming that it would be cheaper to drive a truck to a local generator, and recharge a series of battery to bring back to the farm, rather than suffer the administrative and transmission charges tacked onto our bills by companies like AltaLink. All joking aside, the question remains! What do Albertans really need? If we need to upgrade our transmission system, how do we do it for the maximum benefit of Albertans? If we need more electricity in one particular geographic area of the province, what is the best solution? Transmission lines are not always the best solution. Why? Transmission lines only transferelectricity from one location to another. Electricity transmitted from Edmonton to Calgary means that the electricity transmitted is not available for consumption in Edmonton. The Heartland transmission line project illustrates the problem created by Bill-50. AESO and AltaLink claim a $580 million dollar transmission line is required to increase the amount ofelectricity in the Heartland. However, for less than half the cost of a transmission line, ($263 million dollars to be exact), Capital Power has proven that it can build a new generator in the Heartland that would actually increase the amount of electricity in the Heartland by 43%. From the publics perspective, it is far more prudent to build a generator in the Heartland. For the Premiers benefit this is a $317 million dollar savings she could use to refund education. However, if it is our primary intention to provide AltaLink with an income, then a transmission line at twice the cost would be more appropriate. Premier Redford, what say you? Will you restore the publics right to question the need for new transmission lines? Will you restore the law that requires that we build what is in the best interest for all Albertans? Will you invite the public back into the conversation? After all, the public is paying for these projects. Let us know by your actions: Repeal Bill-50 and void the Heartland hearings. Cancel the scheduled HVDC hearings. Lets have an informed conversation based on facts and evidence to determine what is best for Albertans. Joe Anglin Rimbey, AB

To the Editor I would like to answer to Mayor Steve Grajczyks letter regarding the water and sewer treatment plant. I do not have any suggestions for him on how to solve the current mess that exists due to the decisions made. I do however have suggestions for him on how to avoid repeating this situation in the future. Any good businessman or businesswoman knows that before you go out and pick a solution you need to do thorough and proper business requirements gathering and analysis. Part of that would be ensuring that you appropriately SIZE the solution to meet the current and future needs. I dont understand how sizing a solution that was more than double the current requirements makes sense. Perhaps in the future a more realistic view should be taken and ensure that the proposed solution can grow to meet the ongoing demands as the demands increase rather than buying an oversized solution
that is not required currently and may never be. When doing a business case one of the most IMPORTANT costs to include is operational costs. I dont buy a car without knowing what the ongoing maintenance costs are going to be and what the costs to run the vehicle are. That is definitely a factor in my decision and I would go so far as to bet that most business who are accountable for their costs and profits and want to stay in business would include this in their decisions and business case. Mayor Steve states There were also some unknowns in regards to the plant such as the $4.8 million a year in operational costs for both the water and sewer. How can you not know about a $4.8 million dollar operating cost? Who did the business case and what was included and who approved it? Did this business case include the ongoing maintenance lifecycle for the plant and does the town have the funds and plan for managing that over the next 25 years? There should be accountability for this and if this was the private sector people would have been fired! I suggest that the town council and management need to be accountable for all expenditures and all plans and should be measured the same as a private corporation would measure its employees. Perhaps we should pay a lower base salary and then a percentage of their salaries based on performance and then there would be more accountability. Helen Gilbertson Strathmore, AB

What is the Strathmore Whole Health Expo? The question should be WHO
WHO COmmittee members
The what it is is simple... the principles of the Strathmore Whole Health Expo is to display products/services/information of alternative and holistic health care solutions that are available in our community. This trade fair will be taking place at the Civic Centre on March 31 - April 1, 2012. But the goal is even simpler: We are looking to empower others to improve their health and well-being, through both exposure to and education of the many options available. This is an age where people are ready to take their own health into their hands. Health begins with finding balance in life. The physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects make up what is our whole self ... It is essential to include all of these in our search for understanding of healthy living. And it can be an overwhelming task! The vast number of products, services and ideas that are available can stop your search before you even know where to start. This is where the WHO comes in. Our community has a wealth of people who offer their knowledge and services to help better the health of those that are looking for it. From doctors, to private nurses, Chinese medicine to massage, chiropractics to colon cleansing, healthy water to healthy skin care, intuitive practitioners to healing horses; we have so much that can help us live healthier, happier and more balanced lives. We just need to find it! And so the Strathmore Whole Health Expo is a place to find WHO has what you need. And if you are one of the people who have something to share with the community, this will be the place to do it! The WHO of the Strathmore Whole Health Expo Association is made up of volunteers who have been working tirelessly to bring this fair to Strathmore. The following paragraphs are a small self bio by each member, to introduce themselves and the reason that they are proud to be a part of this effort. We look forward to the many relationships this annual event is sure to generate! Cynthia Barnesky Faith is In Your Hands; CoChair Hi everyone, my name is Cynthia Barnesky; just one of the wonderful Ladies that are volun-
teering her time to bring to you the Strathmore Whole Health Expo that is coming to Strathmore March 31 and April 1, 2012. I am a Registered and Certified Massage Therapist, Certified Reflexology and IonCleanse Foot Bath Practitioner and a Reiki and Intuitive Reader/Healer Holistic Practitioner and I have been practicing here in Strathmore for four years now. But I have lived here for over eight years and have noticed that through the years there has not been very many Holistic Practitioners advertising. As a Holistic Practitioner myself now, I feel very passionate about healing the whole body naturally; mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually and that I have had a hard time getting myself out there. Advertising is very expensive to a small business and I wanted to give the small Holistic Practitioner a place to present their services and products to the community. But the most important thing is to give the community a place that they could find a Holistic Practitioner with natural services, products and information that they might have never known that was out there. I hope to see you and your family at the Expo and maybe you can find a Holistic Practitioner or some natural products that will help your body heal naturally! Thank you all, heal naturally! Nancy Hiller Co-Chair, Treasurer Why did I become a committee member? Because I totally believe there are so many natural ways we can take care of our whole health, (mind, body and soul). Stress is the #1 cause of disease, so learning to relax by meditating, doing yoga, tai chi, having a massage, or finding a new avenue that you may not even know exist makes total sense to me. If I can be a part of helping even one person find a product or service to help them reduce the stress in their life I would consider our expo a success. Connie McDonald Registered Nurse; Volunteer My name is Connie McDonald and I believe The Whole Health Expo is such a great opportunity for all the people of Strathmore to learn what kinds of supportive therapies are available near you to prevent illness, assist with pain control, and promote wellness and healing. I am privileged to help organize this Expo and promote what modalities
are available near you. Please come out and promote your talents, and products or just attend to learn how you can support your families wellness needs. The proceeds will go to Strathmore Growing Families Society. Donna Shortt Dental Hygeinist; Volunteer My name is Donna Shortt. I am a Dental Hygienist with over 20 years of experience in my field. Although dental hygiene is my profession, personal growth/ whole health is my passion. From my own life experience, it has been this journey towards finding that delicate balance between body, mind and soul that has been most fulfilling. It is my hope in being a part of this society to provide the people of Strathmore, access to and information about alternative and complimentary health care options within our own community and to encourage all of you to take your health into your hands. Becky Stone Yoga Teacher - Secretary I am an instructor of Hatha yoga. I feel like I am always learning more every day about the human body, and how it is so closely tied to both the emotional/mental and spiritual bodies. This idea of a trade fair to showcase the options available to a community has been brewing in my mind for a few years now. This is the town that I grew up in, and I am blessed to be back to raise my family. And the community of Strathmore is bursting with fantastic opportunities to improve your health. Just like there is no one right way to practice yoga, there is no one right way to find health and balance in your life. We are all on our own journeys. It is our responsibility to protect our health and that of our familys, and I feel so blessed to be a part of helping others along this journey of discovery! There are so many wonderful and innovative ideas out there, and be they ancient or cutting edge, somewhere are the solutions you are looking for. And maybe, just maybe, you will find it at the 2012 Strathmore Whole Health Expo. Cant wait to meet you! For more information please contact us via email at strathmorewholehealthexpo@gmail.com, or on facebook at http/facebook.com/strathmorewholehealthexpo.

Amanda Bruce, left, and Kathryn Piesas took time out of their Saturday morning schedule to volunteer at the Civic Centre for the PC leadership election on October 1.
When election time comes around, there is a misconception that says there is a disinterest from the younger generation. That was not the case on Oct. 1 when two 17-year-old Strathmore girls offered their time at the PC polling station after casting their own votes. We went in to vote, me and my friends, and they said they needed some help. There was a bunch of openings so we just signed up, said Amanda Bruce. She said she was helping because it seemed so busy and a lot of the volunteers were doing the same thing over and over again throughout the day. Her job was taking care of membership sign-ups for a few hours. Bruce would definitely help out again if she were needed. It was really organized and a lot more fun than I thought it was going
to be actually, said Bruce. All the people were really nice. Everybody was really helpful and accommodating. Kathryn Piesas had gone with Bruce to cast her vote, and also decided to lend a hand. It felt good to be helping out, said Piesas. She had never voted before and had gone because one of the candidates was fighting for something important for one of her friends. My friend Rachel is diabetic and Gary Mar was doing something for the diabetic insulin pump so she doesnt have to go and get her kit all the time, said Piesas. They did a wonderful job and it did appear that they wanted to get involved in the democratic process, said George Pinchbeck, assistant deputy returning officer for Strathmore. The girls said many people seemed surprised to see them helping out, but both were glad to be there and be a part of it.
Holy Cross Collegiate, HCC, teacher Jennifer Yersh and her art class have found a new way to incorporate their passion for art, while helping those in need. The class will be hosting a Style Your Sole party in partnership with TOMS Shoes. The TOMS program, they started something that was basically a one for one. So for every pair of shoes that a consumer bought they would donate a pair of shoes to a child in (need), said HCC art student Braeden Mackan. Anyone in the community can order a pair of white canvas shoes in their size, and upon arrival can design and decorate them. Tricia Thomas, another HCC art student, had brought up the idea of a Style Your Sole party, something she had done with her church. It started as a class project, but as we started talking about it, it became a school-wide movement. Its a really good thing because its combining both our passions in art and our schools faith and fundamentals, said Mackan. It isnt just like a pair of shoes because its a nice thing to have a new pair of shoes, its actually giving them opportunities for things that they couldnt do before. I think our biggest hope for this project is that it does go school-wide, or if were lucky enough people all around the community hear about it, and that they understand that this isnt just a fashion trend, its a really good
cause, and its worth supporting. They took on this project themselves. Its not a very big class, were six in total, but they created a slideshow and went class to class and told the whole school about it, said Yersh. For the last few weeks the six students have also been giving up their lunch break to host a table in the foyer to let the other students know what the project is all about and to hopefully sign them up. Its just really nice from my perspective to see them really get into it and become global citizens. It really opens up a world of opportunity in terms of what you can do as one person, said Yersh. Shae Kivlehan, one of Yershs students, bought five pairs of shoes and is decorating them as Christmas presents. The shoes that actually go to Africa, the kids that get them, they can go to school. Shoes are actually part of the uniform, said HCC student Melissa Hamilton. It is recommended the shoes are ordered a half size smaller than what you would normally wear, and when the order comes in then a date will be set for the Style your Sole party. People can order directly at www.toms.com or can go through HCC by contacting Jennifer Yersh at jyersh@redeemer. ab.ca. The cut-off date to order the shoes through the school is Oct. 19. Yershs students have offered to decorate the shoes for anyone who would like to order them but dont think they are creative enough to decorate the shoes themselves.

Standard resident and avid car builder and driver Ted Allan broke the world record in his class of land speed racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah this August. Allan says, Land speed racing is not a new sport. Cars have been racing in Bonneville for well over 100 years and making it the Mecca for hot rodders and racing enthusiasts. This August, Bonneville saw well over 570 vehicles and owners arrive from all over North America, Australia, Italy, New Zealand and Sweden. After Allans 5-mile test run on Aug. 13, he hit 212 mph. His second run hit 228 mph, breaking the record of 217 mph by a Californian the day before. In order to make a record official racers must do a back-up run. It was some back-up as his vehicle pushed 231 mph, which gave him an average record speed of 230.192 mph, break-

To all our wonderful Sponsors past and present the Community of Sacred Heart Academy would like to acknowledge your continued generosity and Community Spirit! 2011/2012 marks the 10th Anniversary for Sacred Heart Academy. ing his original world record set earlier that day, thereby necessitating another official second run. His fourth run hit 235 mph, which was his personal best but didnt officially count because they had to abort the second back-up run because of a wind situation. For many, racing at Bonneville and El Mirage represents the last area of motorsports where people are encouraged to come up with their own ideas and try them out, without the need for million-dollar sponsorship deals. No matter what people like to build and race, at Bonneville and El Mirage theres bound to be a class to race it in. Dream it, build it, race it. Another aspect of the sport that appeals to a lot of the racers is its lack of commercialism. This is racing thats put on by racers, for racers. You wont find any corporate suites or posh restaurants overlooking the Bonneville Salt Flats. The atmosphere at one of these meets in some ways resembles what one might find at many other motorsports events teams working hard and having a good time. What youll find at Bonneville and El Mirage thats a rare commodity is the tradition involved. Where else could you find people competing in race cars that were originally built in the fifties? A friend of the family, Don Siewart, was the man who precipitated Allans love of cars and racing. Siewart helped prepare Allan for his first build in November 2001 and by 2002 had his
1928 Ford Pickup truck built and race ready. Then in 2009 Allan, after modifications, got his truck racing up to 210 mph, but then his engine blew up. At the time the world record for this class was 214 mph. Allan wasnt discouraged as he decided to build a new car in October of 2010 and had it completed race ready for the August 13, 2011 races in Bonneville. This time Allan had gone from his 1928 truck to building a 1926 Ford Roadster. The vehicles built for these races are unique and have a few rules laid out for them to be able to qualify to race. Allans Roadster had original dimensions from the windshield rearward whereby the width and height was just as an original 1926 Ford. From the windshield forward racers are allowed the freedom to build the body as they want in order to make it as aerodynamic as possible. Looking at the vehicle, one can tell the streamlined front to the wide backend is ideal for speed. Allan was pleased that his car worked beautifully as it was designed and pays tribute to his crew. My most important crew member is my beautiful wife of 30 years Dianne, without her none of it would be possible and I am thankful for her support and encouragement, says Allan. Dianne has raced in the past herself and picked up speeds of 171 mph, but she hasnt decided whether shell drive the Ford Roadster.

Rosebud was selected as one of 2011 Alberta Arts Days main Host Celebration site and received support from the Government of Alberta for its planned events on the weekend of Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. Rosebud kicked off their weekend on Friday at 5 p.m. in style with an Art and Gallery Walk, highlighting five venues that showcased painting, quilting, weaving, homemade jewelry, photography, and costume design by various artists in the community and area. The afternoon also held the official opening of internationally renowned photographer Harry Palmers display of A Portrait of Rosebud featuring Rosebud people and places shot in the early 1980s and in 2010-2011. The evening ended with a well-attended fantastic Family Dance where all ages were encouraged to learn it and do it learning some new folk steps throughout the evening. Guests for the weekend were encouraged to take in the most recent performance from the Rosebud Dinner Theatre, Queen Milli of Galt, a hilariously touching love story, which will soon be coming to a close as they prepare and set up for their Christmas production The Gifts of the Magi set to open on Nov. 4. There were many opportunities for children to participate in the weekend where workshops were provided for everyones tastes. One of the popular workshops was Saber Making, led by young Rosebud artists Donovan Snider and Hadden Eliuk. Kids used old magazines, pvc dowels and pipe insulators and crafted custom toy sabers that could be used for the Stage Combat

workshop. The Combat Workshop introduced kids (and some adults) with professional theatre fighting directed by local stage artists Karl Sine and Nathan Schmidt in an active training session. Official Rosebud Alberta Arts Days Assembly kicked off with a performance by Rosebuds new all-male choir, The Men of the Bud. There were guest greetings from local dignitaries including Kevin Sorensen, representatives from Rosebud Centre of the Arts, Rosebud Historical Society and the Rosebud Church. Sorensen found himself included in all the fun by participating in a Drum Circle as well as the all-male choir. Music and Spoken Word Night happened on Saturday evening with an eclectic range of music and writing in Rosebuds two newest fantastic eateries, the Thorny Rose Cafe and Wild Horse Jacks Bistro and Grill. The following were those who participated in the evening at the Thorny Rose Caf : Natalie Gauthier (poetry), Aaron Krogman (singer/songwriter), Kyrsten Erickson (poetry), special guest Ben Folkman (poetry and song), and headliner blues singer and keyboardist Jennie Thai. At Wildhorse Jacks : the hometown kings, the ever popular Rosebud River Valley Boys. It seems like there is always something happening in Rosebud. For more information of all the action and particularly the newest stage shows check it all out at www.rosebud.ca.

Strathmores history book finally has a name. Michael Ell and Elisa Maxwell, members of the Naming Committee within the Centennial Committee were proud to announce to council that James Bos submitted the winning name for the book. Bevan Daverne, Superintendent of GHSD, far left, at meeting in Central Bow Valley
Golden Hills School Divisions Superintendent Bevan Daverne met with the School Councils of East Wheatlands four schools to open up discussions again in hopes of finding a solution to the school situation in the area. Declining enrollment, aging buildings, and changing demographics has put East Wheatlands schools and communities in the same boat. As no one school is able to do it alone, the communities need to reach a consensus so they can begin paddling in the same direction towards a solution. Gleichens Central Bow Valley, Hussar School, Rockyford School and Standard School each held meetings over the last two weeks with the Superintendent, parents and concerned citizens over the matter. All came to somewhat of a consensus that things needed to change and change rapidly as this could no longer be pushed onto the backburner. At Central Bow Valley on Oct. 5, over 30 people including the present School Council, came together to hear what GHSD is looking for in East Wheatland. Daverne said, We are looking at our process for a solution in the area to restart the discussions and move ahead. We (the Board of GHSD) understand that it has been painful for parents, school staffs, trustees and especially the kids these past few years in particular due to the unrest and misinformation. This is not a new problem and these concerns are widespread all across rural Alberta. What has been a lobby exercise in the past needs to be changed to a solutionfocused cooperation from all four communities. Daverne listened empathetically to the concerns that were brought to the table, which were essentially the same concerns that the communities have had for the last decade or longer. Many
expressed the concern that the lack of a presence of a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school in each community would cause the communities to die off. However, looking at demographics and growth patterns in East Wheatland, there is the question of if there are enough students attending to allow these schools to be viable. In the next couple of months the communities of Hussar, Gleichen, Rockyford and Standard need to come together, leaving the past issues behind and move ahead to what all of them say is the main drive behind their wants and needs and that is What is in the best interest of our children? Daverne said, Parents will always make the best decision for their families and we need to make all the information available and transparent to everyone involved. Sandra Burke of Gleichen has four grandchildren in the community and she stressed that the lack of transparency and scare tactics in the past from the Board of Directors of GHSD will not be tolerated any longer. There has been a lack of cohesion in the communities as one has been pitted against the other for such a long time (some cant even remember when there wasnt any fighting). Daverne said that what he has heard from parents from all the communities is: split grades are o.k., triple grades are questionable, beyond triple grades, from a parental perspective, is not o.k. For high school there are a different set of expectations and parents have mixed feelings as to what the range is. Academically speaking it is important to have live teacher-taught classes, there needs to be a sports program, music and arts programs made available. The students want it all. East Wheatland residents can be on the lookout for more information and meetings in the weeks ahead.

Happy Birthday!
The Legion celebrated its 85th birthday on Oct. 8. members enjoyed going through the many years of photo albums, and there was cake for everyone.
One of the best things about October is Oktoberfest, something Holy Cross Collegiate, HCC, will be hosting for the first time on Oct. 21 at the Civic Centre. Oktoberfest has been a part of Bavarian culture since the early 1800s and is a tradition that has carried on, and been emulated, throughout the years. While the event hosted by HCC wont follow the beer chugging twoday festivals style, it is sure to be a great community event and a lot of fun. Its just something different, it is something new. We wanted something more at the beginning of the year, said Andrea Culshaw, one of the organizers with the Parents Social Club. She said it is a great way for the parents to get to know each other, and
is open to the entire community. It is also a fundraiser for the school and after feeling the last one didnt do as well as it could have, the club decided to try something new. Its always been like a funny money casino, and we thought lets change it up. It wasnt doing well, as well as we would like it, so we thought we would try something a little different. Bring it into a different time of year, make it more of a get-to-know-yourcommunity, said Culshaw. Our funding goes directly back into the school, and it goes directly to the core subjects. We fund anything that is not funded by the government. Its going to be an evening of dinner and dancing. During dinner the entertainment is sure to put the guests into an Oktoberfest kind of mood. During the dinnerone of our students, she plays accordion and shes
part of an ensemble, so her and her mom and their group are coming to play an accordion ensemble. Its kind of neat, so were kind of excited about that, said Culshaw. The group is called the Jarosh Accordion Ensemble and isnt the only entertainment for the night - a few fathers have volunteered to DJ for the dance portion of the night. Its an adult only event but some students will be helping out with cooking the food. Tickets are on sale for $40 each. Anyone wishing to just attend the dance it will be $15 per ticket. Tickets can be purchased at Holy Cross Collegiate, Bangles Hair Studio and Spa, or email Andrea at aculshaw@redeemer. ab.ca.

The Wheatland Braves improved to 5-0-1 on the season after defeating the Airdrie Lightning 6-2 on Oct. 9 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
ing, collecting a pass from Ryan Bell and Malik Kaddoura. We had some really prolonged lapses (with) lack of effort, attention to the task, attention to detail. We were quite fortunate to get the win (Friday), said Klemmensen. This will come to an end if we dont play 60 minutes thats all there is too it. However, the Braves came to play on Sunday and proved that their hot start is no fluke. Riley Romashenko scored the hat-trick and added an assist to lead the way for the Braves, while Kaddoura, Bell and Kaden Hanas each scored once. Ty Tarvyd made 31 saves for the win, while Reinhardt added a pair of helpers in the win. The Braves collected two goals in each period and peppered the Lightning with 43 shots en route to the win. The bottom line, despite how each win was achieved, is that the Braves are the top team in the league and Klemmensen says the team had to be prepared for the bulls-eye on their back. At the end of the day (teams) will be gunning for us, youre exactly right, said the coach. Thats part of the growing up process of becoming a double-A player. Well see how they handle it. (The coaching staff) will do what we can to prepare them for it. The Braves next game is Oct. 16 (4:15 p.m.) when they host the Innisfail Flyers at the Strathmore Family Centre. Warriors remain undefeated The Wheatland Warriors improved to 4-0-1 on the season after
whipping the Red Deer Steel Kings 9-0 on the road Oct. 8 and edging the Airdrie Lighning 4-3 the following day at the Strathmore Family Centre. Will Conley and Markus Lavallee each scored twice and added two assists to lead the way for the Warriors, while Shane Fraser added a pair of goals and an assist in the 9-0 romp. Jayse Wilson scored twice and Kaleb Robinson also tallied for the Warriors. On Sunday, Fraser again notched two goals and an assist to lead the way for the Warriors, while Robinson and Conley each scored once. The local double-A bantam team will play a pair of road games this weekend when they travel to Lacombe and Innisfail. Chiefs improve to 3-0 Just like the peewee and bantam teams, the Wheatland Chiefs double-A midget squad improved to 3-0 on the season with a 10-3 road win over the Taber Golden Suns on Oct. 8. Going into the third period with a 3-3 tie, the Chiefs exploded for seven unanswered goals in the third period. Abe Jensen notched a hat-trick, while Connor McCallum and Brooker Pretty Youngman each scored twice to lead the Cheifs. James Price added a goal and two helpers, while Justin Kostluk added a goal and an assist. Ryan Thomas notched the other goal for the Chiefs. The Chiefs next home game is Oct. 14 (7:30 p.m.) when they host the Airdrie Lightning at the Strathmore Family Centre.
After earning four out of a possible six points to start the season, UFA Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen likes the way his team has progressed since Game 1. After posting a 2-2 draw to open the season versus Lethbridge, the Bisons hit the road this past weekend, defeating the Lloydminster Bobcats 4-3 on Oct. 8, before earning another 2-2 draw versus the J Ennis Kings the following day. Despite not winning all the games, Friesen likes what he sees from his triple-A midget squad. Absolutely there has been a progression in their game said Friesen. Our attention to detail is a lot better. Were staying within the system guys are starting to figure out pretty quick that when they do that, were successful and it works. Now its just an execution piece our timing is just a little bit off when our passes are half a second behind or a half second early. That has resulted in scoring opportunities going by the wayside. Its a work in progress, but so far, I think weve taken steps in the right direction each time out. On Saturday night, the Bisons used four powerplay goals en route to the win. Tyler Haiste scored once and added a pair of assists to lead the way for the Bisons, while Tyler Wong, Austin Masse and Alex Bechtold also tallied for the Herd. Owen Ferguson had two assists and goaltender Grayson Sharpe earned his first AMHL victory. We were effective when we got pucks deep and punished their d-men, said Friesen of the win. In the second period we had a bit of a collapse they started hitting us pretty high and pretty late and they kind of got us off of our game there a little bit. In the third period, we stuck with it and really started attacking them again. Weve got a lot more skill and a lot more speed up front. Despite missing a handful of opportunities, the Bisons still took a point the following day against the Kings. We were shorthanded for 12 to 14 minutes alone in the first period, described Friesen. We came out of that (only) down 1-0. I thought we did a great job on the penalty kill. In the second period, we stayed five-on-five and we really started taking over the game. We really exposed them down low they couldnt handle our forecheck or our speed. We were very good throughout the game, we just had one let down at the end. The Bisons will now travel to Lethbridge on Oct. 15, before returning home to face the Grand Praire Storm on Oct. 16 (2 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

What:
Peewee Spartans are the only team to come home with a win this week
JaMes Giancola Times Jr. Reporter The peewee Spartans football team was in Red Deer Oct. 8 playing against the Hornets. The game went well for the Spartans, who defeated the Hornets with a score of 46-0. The defense is working as a unit with no one player trying to steal the show said head coach Doug Klauck. The running game was working, but the defense was even better, not allowing the Hornets offence to score a single point. The senior Spartans and the bantams Spartans didnt fare as well, both losing their respective games. Though the senior team pulled through in the second half, gaining more touchdowns, it wasnt enough to pull a victory out of the game. The senior Spartans were up against a very good team, a team they will play one more time in the playoffs. The Spartans will lose a few players for the playoff game due to population restrictions. The team has games in two weeks on Friday the 21st in Calgary. The peewee and bantam teams will both be on home turf this Saturday, with the peewees playing against Lacombe and the bantam facing Hunting Hills. If the peewees are able to pull off the win they will be on a four game winning streak, and as most players know a team going into the playoffs hot is a very dangerous team to play.
