OCTOBER 16, 2011 TWE TY I TH SU DAY I ORDI ARY TIME

While anyone with a paycheck ends up paying taxes regularly, there are many others who pay their taxes as a quarterly estimate. Many states or provinces have a sales tax that applies to certain goods and services. Even some local municipalities add their own fraction of a percent on top of that. And anytime we put gasoline in our car we are paying taxes. Benjamin Franklin's adage, "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes," is certainly true for any of us in this country. It could be said that we are rendering to Caesar by way of the taxes we pay as part and parcel of our everyday life. In the Gospel today Jesus points out that there is nothing wrong with paying taxes. In fact, in the examination of conscience in the Rite of Penance, the questions that are asked include, "Have I done my duty as a citizen? Have I paid my taxes?" From the perspective of a Christian, paying taxes is part of promoting the common good, since government exists to foster and protect society. Encouraging development and promoting the common good are causes that the popes from the time of Leo XIII to the present have particularly supported in their encyclicals and reflections. And it is an idea that is occasionally lost in the heated political rhetoric of North American culture. As the popes have highlighted, the "common good" is an especially Christian ideal, since it means that we are attentive to the needs of all in society, an inclusive and wide-reaching perspective on who the community truly is. If paying taxes-and in that way promoting the common good-is already a part of our everyday life, we might want to ask ourselves in what ways repaying to God what belongs to God is taking place in our lives every day. How taxing is our spiritual life? Or is our spiritual tax rate too low?

EW PRAYERS, SAME MASS Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent in 2011, Catholics around the US will worship using the new English translation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition. The most noticeable changes are in the Order of Mass and the priests prayers. And also with you becomes And with your spirit. We believe becomes I believe, and one in being becomes consubstantial. Though some words are new, the Mass itself is not changing. As the US bishops remind us, this is an opportunity for liturgical and spiritual renewal. Learning to pray with new words, we enter into the mystery of the Eucharist with greater awareness and appreciation EW MUSIC, SAME MASS"
Do you like to sing in the shower? If so, St. Mary Music Ministry is looking for you! Whether you are a solo singer, a back-up singer, or just enjoy singing in an informal group, your help at any Mass any time will be appreciated! You do not need to read music, or to commit to singing every week; brief rehearsals are held weekly right before each Mass, and right after Mass for the following week's music; just meet in the Choir Loft! There will also be general rehearsals once a month on Saturdays from 11:30 - 1:00. Please consider volunteering your time as available to this important ministry, and especially as we transition to the new and challenging Roman Missal 3 liturgical music settings - ALL are welcome!
