As all of you know our LIGHTNING system has been coming under attack
from CHARM and its distributors. In order to help counter some of the false
statements and misinformation being circulated about LIGHTNING, and the
CHARM system I have put together positioning and talk points for the most
common statements made against the LIGHTNING system. This will
hopefully help each of you "talk story" particularly when selling against
CHARM.
The Facts-
Since the mid 90's and still today CHARM is playing "catch-up" to the
LIGHTNING system. The technology used in the CHARM LUM-T has, to our
knowledge, not changed since its introduction in 97/98. The few changes
they have made to their software and peripherals have been to add features
that the LIGHTNING system already had.
Charm History
<1998 Luminometer K
- Billed as portable, but it weighed 3.9 lbs
- measured 4.5 x 9 .5 x 8
- Data tracking software was not available
- No customized interface for downloading data - difficult
to use (per Food Quality article, 1996).
- Could only store 1,200 test points (per CHARM sales
material).

The Facts:
CHARM positions their positive control tablets as a "calibration verification
program". At best, a positive control can verify the performance of the swab,
but can not verify the performance of the luminometer, nor can it recalibrate
the luminometer when necessary.
The LIGHTNING system offers the only real calibration system in the industry.
The luminescent and non luminescent calibrators verify both high and low
counts in the luminometer, thereby ensuring that it is reading accurately.
The LIGHTING PC verifies the accurate performance of the swab.
Furthermore it is pre-dispensed in a sealed vial which is easier to use and
safeguards against human error and eliminates the dilution steps. LIGHTING
therefore offers the only complete calibration system.
Why is calibration such a big deal? The "Mega-Reg" (p. 38871, Sec.
417.5 RECORDS) states that under a HACCP program "the calibration of
process-monitoring instruments; corrective actions, including all actions
taken in response to a deviation; verification procedures and results; product

The FACTS:
While it is true that the LUM-T can store 4,800 test points, storage is spread
across 6 channels. Only 1 channel is pre-programmed for the ATP
luminometer. The other 5 are set aside for customized assays (i.e. Rosa
strips, Beta-lactams tests, etc.). So, to be technically correct only 800 data
points can be stored at any one time in the channel pre-programmed for ATP
testing. Furthermore, CHARM claims that 300 test points can be
customized - but that is across all 6 channels. So only 50 test points can be
customized in the pre-programmed ATP channel. A customer may choose to
use all 6 channels for ATP testing, but he must then remember where certain
test points are stored. This may not be the most convenient or user-friendly
feature.
LIGHTNING on the other hand, can store up to 2000 results and 200 of them
have the ability for to be customized. They can all be accessed in one easy-
to-reach, central location. We don't confuse our customers with channels.

The Facts:
LIGHTNING TRAX on the other hand has been proven for a number of years.
We now even have a version that can be downloaded from the web. TRAX is
a very powerful tool for analysis and reporting and suprisingly simple, once
you read the directions. We will be coming out with a one page "Quick
Reference Guide" for downloading data into TRAX, to make the process less
intimidating to the uninitiated.

One of the features of the CHARM LUM-T is "on-screen statistics". The results
from 4 mathematical calculations are available:

An ATP Positive Control Tablet available from Charm Sciences may be used to make a
positive control. The PocketSwab is used to test the positive control for calibration validation
of the LUM-T. This procedure not only validates the calibration of the analyzer but also
verifies the performance of the PocketSwab. A negative control (a PocketSwab activated
without swabbing a surface) is also run as part of the analyzer calibration validation. The
two-point validation assures that the test and analyzer meet specifications for selectivity as
well as sensitivity. The specification for a negative control is 0 RLU and for a positive control
is 20,000 to 40,000 RLU. It is recommended that positive and negative controls be run
monthly or quarterly to verify calibration. More frequent verification may be required as part
of a quality assurance system based on number of tests run (every 100 tests, for example),
shift changes, daily or weekly operation.
If specifications are not met, Charm Sciences’ Technical Support Department is available (see
Troubleshooting) for immediate assistance. ATP Positive Control Tablets, new PocketSwabs,
and loaner LUM-Ts are available within 24 hours, if necessary.
ATP Positive Control Tablets may be purchased separately using order code ATP-POS-5 or
ATP-POS-20 for 5 or 20 tablets respectively.
Battery
For optimum battery charge and life, recharge the battery only when the LUM-T displays
“battery low recharge soon.” This is a memory battery so drain the battery before recharging.
Full recharge is completed in 3 to 4 hours. The LUM-T battery charger requires a power
source of 120/240 Volt AC at 50/60 Hz. A charged battery will power the LUM-T for up to 8-
10 full hours of operation.
Cleaning
Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and any splashes or puddles. The LUM-T should be cleaned occasionally with
a damp cloth, but do not use any harsh cleansers.
8. TROUBLESHOOTING
Avoid spilling liquids into the sample chamber. If spillage occurs try drying with an absorbent
swab and dry air from a hair dryer.

Dry environments may cause an initial very high number that dissipates over the 5 second
count of the LUM-T. These results are caused by electrostatic interference. If excess RLU are
still recorded, it is recommended to
a) extend the count time or b) wipe the sample with a moist cloth prior to counting. See
section 4.4.2. for instructions to extend the count time.
If charger light does not display on plugging in, the battery fuse may have blown or the
charger may be defective. Contact Charm Sciences for instructions.
Contact the Technical Services staff at Charm Sciences for any questions or concerns about
the Charm LUM-T. 24 hour telephone support numbers are (781) 322-1523 or 1-800-343-
2170.

3. SENSIBILIDAD:
perforado.
Si un usuario actual de Lightning
quiere despedirse de la posibilidad de
calibrarlo, basta que deje que Filpro-
Charm lo perfore.
(Ya no acepta la barra inoxidable;
además, los calibradores de Lightning
también están PATENTADOS por
Biocontrol).

o no existe equivalencia)?
Resp.

Saludos cordiales,
Luis Quintanilla
