FOR IMMEDIATE LOCAL RELEASE

G.H.O.S.T. is an outreach opportunity for children and their parents to have a safe time trick or treating on the campus of Austin Peay State University in conjunction with campus faculty, staff, and students. The tradition began in 1996. SGA sponsors G.H.O.S.T., Great Halloween Option for Safe Trick or Treating and allows children to have a safe celebration with alternative treats and no tricks. Phi Kappa Phi will be passing out the books this year as an alternative to candy G.H.O.S.T. for the fall of 2011 will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on October 30th at Morgan University Center Plaza. According to Dr. Linda Thompson, professor of nursing and president of Phi Kappa Phi, books are a treat that will feed young minds long after Halloween candy is gone. "The Phi Kappa Phi Executive Board voted recently to launch a Literacy Initiative by giving out books to children, instead of candy, at Austin Peays G.H.O.S.T. event," Thompson said. Donations of books of less than $5 can be made to Phi Kappa Phi at Dr. Linda Thompson's office in the McReynolds Building room 103. Originally intended for the children of APSU students, faculty and staff, G.H.O.S.T. also draws children from the local community. APSU clubs and organizations, as well as groups from the community, hand out candy, give away books and paint childrens faces. Phi Kappa Phi has been treating children to books for Halloween since 2003 and has done this every year since.
