ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Before getting into the thick of things, we would like to add

a few heart left words for the people who were a part of the
project in numerous ways….people who gave unending support
right from the stage the idea was conceived. In particular we
express our deep sense of gratitude to our faculty in charge,
Er.B.M.Das, for inspiring us to choose the particular topic and
guiding us all although. Being a expert himself, he was able to
explain the technical details to us lucidly enough to pursue the
subject further by ourselves.

We would also like to utilize this opportunity to express

our deepest gratitude to Dr. P.K.Satpathy, H.O.D., Dept. of
Electrical Engg. for his support that inspired us to successfully
carry out the project. Special thanks are also to the members of
faculty of Electrical Engg. Department for their inspiration and
guidance throughout the project work.

PROJECT LIFE CYCLE

The various phases undertaken for the completion of the project were:
1. PLANNING
• After the topic selection of the project, we analyzed what has to be
done and how is to be done properly and efficiently for the
completion of the project.
• We then divided ourselves into three groups namely: Bipin Ku. Ray
and Abheejeet Mohapatra, Arjuna Panda and Dibyajyoti Satpathy,
Ashoka Ku. Mishra and Soumen Priyadarshee and distributed among
ourselves the various tasks to be performed.
2. ANALYSIS
• The three groups individually studied the three transformers and
their respective connected loads. The load study showed that most
of the loads in CET are inductive in nature which is the principle
reason for low power factor.
• We collected the electricity bill for the month Dec 2007 from our
guide and studied it thus knowing the monthly consumption,
amount paid and the penalty associated with the low power factor.
• To improve the power factor, we studied what are the methods
possible for doing so and came to know that LT Capacitor Banks are
the most effective ones.
• We then gathered information about the devices to be used and
consulted our guide Er. B. M. Das about the design.

3. DESIGN

• In this phase, design of the capacitor bank, its location and the
associated mounting and protecting devices and the cost involved
are decided along with help of our guide.

4. OPTIMIZATION AND PAYBACK PERIOD

• How many capacitor banks to be used, type of operation whether

manual or automatic, selection of specific brands for optimum
performance, estimation of savings and the cost and finally the
payback period is calculated.

5. SUPPORT

• The support phase included post-implementation review of the

system with help of our faculties and the guide. It also included a
systematic approach to identify the major and minor changes
needed for the system.
