Instructional Activities

Anticipatory Set
Description of the Lesson Launch activity: Have the students watch a clip from youtube which is about egocentrism. Tell the students how at the end of the lesson, we will be getting back to the video. I would like the students to tell me what they think they were seeing in the video based on the vocabulary words from the powerpoint. Description of how objectives will be communicated to students: powerpoint Description of the relevance of the learning: There are various ways psychologists explore the cognitive development of children. Jean Piaget is known as one of the most influential psychologists and his theory of cognitive development has been adapted into many educational environments.

Introduce New Information & New Concepts

A powerpoint will be used to provide the students with the new information they will need about Piaget's theory of cognitive development. Blanks will be left throughout to keep the focus of the students. At many times throughout the powerpoint, the students will be asked if they have any questions.

Guided Practice
The class should be broken up into groups of about 3 or 4. They should discuss the small group discussion questions. After about ten minutes, the groups will come back to the entire class and discuss the responses they came up with to the questions.

Assessments
A handout will be given in which the students will have to provide their own definition of cognitive development, list the four stages of Piaget's cognitive development, and provide their own definitions of two of the vocab words provided in the powerpoint.

Closure
The students will be asked to think back through their notes and discuss what they think they were seeing the video. They will be shown the video again and discussion will occur after about five minutes of small group discussion
