180 Degrees Turn (5 Ws & H of Repentance)

May 29, 2006

Recap:

Week 1: Are you ready to meet your deadline?

I. We have a deadline – physical and spiritual death. (Revelations 21:8)
II. Everyone will meet those deadlines. (Romans 3:23)
II. Not everyone will experience second death. (Revelations 4:15)
III. The choice is ours if we want to receive God’s gift - Jesus. (Romans 6:23)

Week 2: NonCPA hired as senior associate

I. Grace and Mercy are two difference things. [Addendum: Mercy is NOT getting what we deserve. Grace
is getting what we DON’T deserve.]
II. God is patiently awaiting for our return.
III. Repentance is agreeing with the offended party of the offense one has made.
IV. Repentance is necessary to salvation. (John 1:15)
V. In our return, God will make us co-heirs with Christ.

Psalm 103
[8] The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
[9] He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;
[10] he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.
[11] For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;
[12] as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
[13] As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him
[14] for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

What is repentance? Turning 180 degrees

Knowing what you are turning away from and who you’re turning towards to.

John 8: 1 – 11 Adulterous woman is forgiven.

John 8:11 "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

Two controls in our lives: One is either controlled by the sinful nature or by the Spirit.
Romans 8:6 The mind of the sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and
peace.

Who is controlled by the sinful nature? Everyone.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Who is controlled by the Spirit? Those who have Christ.

Romans 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of
God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

Where & When? It’s anywhere, anytime.

Acts 9:1-9 Saul at Damascus
Acts 9: 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around
him.

How? In humility

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told
this parable: 10"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The
Pharisee stood up and prayed about[a] himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers,
evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

13"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and
said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

14"I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts
himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Facts:
• Jesus did not come for the righteous. He came for the sinners. Mark 2:17 On hearing this, Jesus
said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the
righteous, but sinners."
• God wants us back so badly he didn’t mind sending his own for our sins.

Romans 5:10-11
10For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how
much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11Not only is this so, but we
also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
John 3:16
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall
not perish but have eternal life

Summary
I. Repentance is knowing what to turn from and who to turn to.
II. Everyone is to turn from a life controlled by the sinful nature and turn to Jesus for a life
controlled by the Spirit. (Romans 6:23)
III. Jesus came to earth to reconcile us to the Father. (Romans 5:10-11)

Memory Verse
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave is one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall
not perish but have eternal life.

To Ponder:
Who is Jesus? Jesus is a common name, even the evil Spirits believe he is God but they don’t know him,
so who is he?
