ROLE OF EDUCATION IN SOCIAL CHANGE


SOCIAL CHANGE:

Social changes are the changes in the society, which arise due to the need of the time. The main reasons for social change are: 1. When the existing system fails to meet the needs of the society 2. Or when the better alternatives are present for the needs of the people Social changes include the various types of developmental, cultural, economical, political and globalization changes taking place. Education plays a vital role in the social change of a society. The idea of education is not merely to impart knowledge to the pupil in some subjects but to develop in him those habits and attitudes with which he can successfully face the future. A large part of our social and technical skills are acquired through deliberate instruction, which we call education. A.W Green writes: Historically education has meant the conscious training of the young for the later adoption of adult roles. As it has been stated , education plays an important role in the socialization factor as well as the development of the society. The concepts of socialization and learning are related to in fact often inseparable from the concept of education. The main function of the educative process is to pass down knowledge from generation to generation- a process that is essential to the development of culture. Formal education is primarily designed to inculcate crucial skills and values central to the survival of the society or to those who hold effective power. ROLE OF EDUCATION IN SOCIAL CHANGE: Education plays a vital component in the social change. A society having uneducated members can never be fully developed. Education provides the basis of the change through the youth because when the youth is aware of the circumstance and situations, they strive for its betterment and to modify the system. For this education is a major tool. Education contributes in all kinds of social change ranging from 1. Developmental changes 2. Technological changes 3. Cultural changes 4. Political changes 5. Traditional changes Role of education in developmental changes : When a society prospers ,it is because the people in it are prospering. This can only be possible when the people are accustomed to help in developing their community to the best possible and utilizing the resources properly. Literacy helps people to know more and so they are better in organizing structuring and developing their community Role of education in technological change Our society has evolved to become an industrial one , one with constant new technological avenues open to us. The new technological discoveries have made our life easier and they would not have been possible had it not been for education. Be it

computers or internet or various types of cellular phones ,their constant upgrading and better models are only because of education. Role of education in cultural change: Education acts as a mean of transferring cultures but it can also be the tool for changing the cultures according to the modern times. As an example when people became literate , their sense of thinking became more liberal and they realized that allowing women to work, study and do regular jobs like men would reap benefits for society as a whole. Education helps in broadening the mindset of people to accommodate new social norms and values. Role of education in economical change: For the economical upholding of a society education is essential. More jobs are created when new fields are introduced in studies and because of decrease in unemployment , there is a general economic stability. Furthermore this leads to economic power. If we take the example of the reigning superpower of the world America, we see that for the people there it is an obligation to study till at least high school. So even the most uneducated person is able to acquire a job and is in a position to earn a decent living. Role of education in political change: The state or government controls all the affairs of a country but even that is dependent upon education. The leadership of the country if educated can better understand the problems and crises in the country. Other than that, if the people are educated and are aware of the political situations, they can evaluate the leaders and according to that voice their opinions. It allows people to bring the change they seek. This becomes the ultimate cause for the political turnarounds and revolutions in countries, which can change their fate. CONCLUSION: In order to bring a social change ,education is necessary . otherwise one or more institutions of the society will suffer and the social progress can never occur. . The fact that the education system is a part of the society, which is it changing. Therefore the real issue is that of the interrelationship between educational institutions and other aspects of the society. The education system can not be seen in isolation from its social context.
