Welcome
Open days are a great way to find out more about Oxford and the wealth of opportunities which the University offers its students. As Oxford is a collegiate university, there is no central campus. You can visit one or more colleges whilst you are here, as well as academic departments and other University buildings. The Undergraduate Admissions Office and a variety of student advisory services will be hosting presentations and information desks throughout the day at the Open Day Information Centre based in the Examination Schools in the High Street. There are many different ways to plan an open day here and we hope very much that this Open Day Guide will help and ensure that you can find your way around. Please note that all events listed in this guide do NOT require advanced booking.

Students with disabilities

So that we can provide the best possible service, please advise us of anyone attending the open day with mobility or other special needs. You can contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office in advance of your arrival by emailing: undergraduate.admissions@admin.ox.ac.uk or by ringing: +44 (0)1865 288000. If you are planning to book onto a college open day or to attend a departmental open day, please could you notify the college or department in advance of your visit of any mobility or other needs. Please note that it will also be possible to speak to staff from the Universitys Disability Advisory Service on the day if you wish to discuss the support available to you. Please see p.10 for further details.

If you have downloaded this guide in advance and would like to see if places are still available for college or departmental events which do require booking, please visit: www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/opendays

University of Oxford Open Day

Places to eat and drink

If you book in to a college open day lunch may be provided. If you have not booked, there are many good cafes and restaurants dotted all over the city of Oxford. If you are looking for some refreshment, then you may wish to head for Little Clarendon Street, Broad Street, Cornmarket, the High Street, the Oxford Castle area or the Covered Market (between Market Street and the High Street). Alternatively, the restaurant at the Oxford University Club, at 11 Mansfield Road, is somewhere you can go to if you are looking for a drink and a meal. The restaurant has picturesque views out across the field towards Marston. It will be open all day, serving breakfast between 07.30 and 10.30, lunch between 12.00 and 14.00, and dinner between 18.00 and 20.30. Snacks and refreshments will also be available throughout the day. www.club.ox.ac.uk/catering If we are lucky with the weather and you feel like a picnic, perhaps by the river, then you may like to make for the University Parks (see p.14) or Christ Church Meadow (see p.14) both of which are central.

Please do tell us what you think

Help us make open days an even better experience, by taking a few minutes after your visit to answer our questions at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/ouopendaysept11 All participants will be entered into a raffle and the winner will receive a 25 Blackwell Bookshops gift voucher for use in one of their 40 shops or online.

Do you still have unanswered questions?

If you feel you need further information after the open day, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office at: undergraduate.admissions@admin.ox.ac.uk Or phone: +44 (0)1865 288000

Visiting Colleges
Oxford University is made up of different colleges. They are sometimes described as being like halls of residence at other universities. They are like this but much, much more besides. If you study at this university you will belong to a college and you will live in that college, at least for your first year. It is also likely that most of your tutorial teaching will take place there as well.

But how do I choose there are so many?

During your time here (or if possible in advance) try and draw up a short-list of colleges to visit. To do this, first check which colleges offer your course: Look on our website at www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/colleges See p.138 in our Undergraduate Prospectus You can also watch the video How to choose a college at www.admissions.ox.ac.uk You might also like to consider: The size of the college The location of the college (is it near the city centre or a few minutes away? Is it near your department building, the park, the river or the swimming pool?) How old or new it is If after doing this, you still find you have no strong preference, dont worry. Visiting any of the colleges will give you a very good idea of how the college system works. It is worth knowing that an increasing number of students make an open application which means that they dont express a college preference and the University allocates the college which will consider them. Did you know that every year around 25% of successful applicants are offered a place by a college other than the one they expressed a preference for on their UCAS form?

International Students Admissions Advice

The Admissions Process

International students are most welcome to attend our open day events and admissions staff will be happy to answer your questions about the UCAS form, English language requirements, qualifications or about any other aspect of the admissions process and how it relates specifically to anyone living outside the UK.

What is UCAS? Do I need Maths A-level to apply for PPE? What should I put in my personal statement? Will my extracurricular activities at school help me make a stronger application? Do I have to have a GCSE in a modern language? How can I prepare for the interview? If you would like these, or completely different questions answered about applying to Oxford, please come and talk to staff from the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

The Student Information & Advisory Service for International Students

If you are interested in applying for a course that requires a pre-interview test, please ask tutors at a college or a subject department open day or staff on our information desk at the Open Day Information Centre. Staff on our information desk will include a team from Cambridge Assessment, the organisation which administers many of our pre-interview tests.

Oxford Pre-Interview Tests

If you are an international student, you might like to speak to a member of the Student Information and Advisory Service. This service is responsible for providing advice about issues such as immigration and extensions to students visas. It coordinates a meet-and-greet service at Heathrow Airport for students arriving at the start of the academic year and runs an annual Orientation Programme for new students. This service also holds workshops and presentations during term time, and organises a departure programme for students preparing to leave the University to return home or to work in the UK after their studies. www.ox.ac.uk/students/international_students

University Libraries
The Universitys libraries are world-renowned and a major resource for all students. There are over 100 libraries and many are found in some of the Universitys most beautiful buildings. The Bodleian Library is the main university library which all students may use for reference. It is a legal deposit library which means that it can claim a copy of any book or periodical published in the UK or Ireland. It is the second largest library in the UK and currently holds more than 8,000,000 volumes on 117 miles of shelves. We regret we cannot allow access to the reading rooms (working areas of the Bodleian Library) to open day visitors. This is because we need to ensure these rooms are quiet for study purposes.
