Reggio Reflections 1. Who is a child? A child is a blank canvas who explores and learns through experience.

A child is a wondrous creature who has the innate need to learn about the world around them. A child is a gift. Technically in our country, a child is under the age of 18 and the responsibility of their parents until that age. However, in the eyes of a parent, their child is still their child at all ages. As I reflection on what a child is they are a person somewhere between birth and puberty. A child is someone that needs to be taken care off with love and understanding. A child needs your guidance on what to do. They are to love and watch and enjoy in having in your life. This is an interesting question. A child, to me, is a person who sees the world through untainted eyes. He is a smart, capable, and competent person who works to make sense of his world and the people, places, and things in it. I believe a child can see the good in all people. A child is a young person with an open mind willing to soak up as much information as they can. They are a young person who is always exploring the environment they live in. Time to learn hands on A time to supported by parents A time to make mistakes To feel loved To learn about ones family backgrounds, cultures, traditions To grow Child is a person, an individual made up of unique character traits and dispositions. A child must rely on the protection and supervision of adults until he/she learns to provide for herself. A child grows through the years until adulthood, learning to make meaningful connections with himself, with his family, with his community, and with the world, forming more complex ideas and evaluations as he grows older. A child never stops growing. We, as adults, carry our childhood with us. We continue to have dialogues with our younger selves, and continue to learn in our unique style. A child is a young mind, a growing soul. A child is a question looking for answers. Someone who is learning and growing. 2. What is childhood? Childhood is an adventure. It is a time to be stress free and focus on the world experimenting and exploring to figure out how it works and how it can be manipulated. It is a time for beginning to build the person that the child will become. Childhood is the time when children are discovering the world, learning about what makes it work, learning about social relationships, learning what they are capable of doing, unlocking the codes of the culture around them, (social norms, environmental print, language, letters, numbers, etc.) and making memories. Childhood is a time for children

Reggio Reflections to be worry free to an extent. It is a time to splash in the puddles, make mud pies, wear moms high heels, help out with adult tasks, experience the elements, feel love, and feel proud of their own accomplishments. Scientific research has shown that a childs brain is hard-wired by age seven to predict a persons personality traits. Childhood is that very impressionable time between birth and adulthood where children are learning from everyone and everything they come in contact with. To me childhood is a time between birth and adolescence. Childhood is divided up between different developmental stages. These stages are early childhood, middle childhood, and Adolescence. Each stage has it challenges. But along with these challenges comes love and understanding. Childhood is a time when children are given the opportunity to learn about themselves and others. It is a time full of play and adventure. When I think of childhood, I think of not having some of the responsibilities I have now like paying bills and making sure there is food on the table. Childhood is important because it is full of experiences that will shape the rest of our lives. Childhood is when you were a child. Child hood is a time for exploration; its a time for learning without the worries of adulthood. Childhood is a time for learning to socialize, communicate, play and interact with people. To me, childhood is the time when a child (0-16 yrs. old approximately) is learning, growing, and learning about the world around them and how everything in it works. Childhood is a time to explore and to learn from hands-on experiences with things in the world around them. I believe that children learn best when they create their own learning opportunities. In our culture, childhood is a period in time for creating our individual styles of learning and self-reflections. We learn how to interact with our families, our communities, the world, and ourselves. We learn about mistakes, failures, and successes. We learn skills. Childhood is a time of learning and exploring. It could be a person with imagination and adventures to complete. Childhood can be a feeling. Fun, exciting, mysterious. 3. How do we learn? Funny enough, I learn in a way that is similar to the children. I touch, I feel, I manipulate, I make inferences, I test my thoughts and I come up with a conclusion. My conclusion may not be correct and then someone shares their conclusion with me and it all clicks. The opposite may happen as well. watching, (visually) imitating, reading, writing, reflecting, doing, making mistakes, taking risks, asking for advice, analyzing, tasting, listening, (auditory) feeling, (sensorial) smelling, kinesthetic, remembering, comparing, experiencing, intuition, making connections

Reggio Reflections between experiences, making emotional connections, confiding in/trusting others, noticing patterns, consequences learn from others stories, experiences, mistakes We learn by observing others and our surroundings, listening, reading what interests us, trial and error, having successes, making mistakes, and research. In my understanding of learning is we all learn differently. All humans have the ability to learn. Each person learns in different ways. We learn by doing and being taught how to do things. People learn gradually. I believe that each person learns differently. There are visual learners, auditory learners, kinesthetic learners, etc. However, I strongly feel that we learn by doing and through experience. Repetition leads to mastery--hear it, see it, do it, over and over and over. I also believe learning is compounded; meaning we call upon what we already know to learn more and make sense of new information. We learn through examples that are shown to us. We learn from watching the people and environment around us. We also learn from exploring and investigating the things we see around us, I also feel that we learn by asking questions and looking for further understanding. As adults, we learn through knowledge, whether someone tells us facts or we look up or study information; and we learn through experience, we learn what works or what doesn't work through past experiences. Visually Non-risk environment With support Thoughtfully Analyzing Reflecting In my time Verbally Through inspiration/motivation We learn when they are determined and passionate about something meaningful to ourselves. We learn by reflection and discussion. We learn through experience, observations, trial and error, practice, repetition. 4. How do children learn?

Reggio Reflections Children learn through experience. Providing experiences for children and allowing them to experience the concept. Children experiment with their environment and attempt to manipulate the materials to see what might happen. Curiosity. Questioning. Exploring. Pushing. Challenging. Accepting. In the same way When they learn something new, they often show excitement. Their body language and facial expressions are more exuberant in their emotions. By much the same way as adults do, however small children learn from being read to until they are old enough to read. Also children learn better from those they have built a relationship with. All children learn differently. They need to be guided and taught how to do things. Some children are visual learners. They learn by looking, reading and watching. Other children are auditory learners. They learn by listening and talking. Some children are kinesthetic learners. They learn things from movement and touch. Other children observe things. All children need your love and understanding to learn. I think children learn by doing as well. I feel they need repetition and the opportunities to practice skills as often and as many times as needed to master them. Children need a variety of experiences, in a variety of settings to make sense of all of their knowledge and generalize it across all domains. Children learn from experimentation and from their mistakes. I feel that children learn by watching the adults around them as well as the children around them. I feel that children learn by being engaged in activities with their peers and engaging in conversations with them. Children learn by being able to explore their environment and by asking and answering questions to further their understanding. Children learn in very much the same way as we do as adults; they learn through the knowledge of others, but the majority of what they learn comes from their own personal experiences and experiments. Hands-on Risk-free environment In their own time With support Visually Verbally As they get older to analyze Items that can help them problem solve, test, hypothesize In meaningful situations children learn when they are determined and passionate to add something meaningful to their lives. They learn by discussion and reflection, as well.

Reggio Reflections Children learn through experience and observation. They learn through exploration and mistakes. They learn through themselves and others. 5. What is the meaning of to educate? The meaning of "to educate" is to provide the experiences that children need and allowing the children to have the experiences without any preconceived or predetermined outcome. Knowing what skills children will need to have, and providing them with the materials and support to practice and master those skills. to teach, to guide, to help, to explain, to model, to help understand, to challenge, to facilitate, to further current knowledge and expand their thinking To teach using goals, observation, documentation, assessment, and evaluation As I reflect on what the meaning of education. It is how we acquire knowledge. You can be educated in many ways. School is one place that you can be educated. People in your life can also educate you. You have to be educated to go on to a fulfilled life. I don't think you have to be a teacher to educate someone. I think when you educate someone you provide them with information he/she doesn't know, or you shed new light on information he/she already has. When you educate someone, the person educated should come away with more information and insight that he/she can apply in his/her own way. To educate is to teach someone so that they are competent in the thing being taught. To provide opportunities for the children to gain knowledge To me, "to educate" a child means that I am facilitating learning experiences for them, and that I am scaffolding their learning. I am not just giving new information and facts, but I am wondering, exploring, and experiencing things with the children, learning along with them, and giving them ideas of how they could find out more about something instead of just telling them. To teach others With support Have someone take something away from what you are teaching them To provide thoughtful observations that allow us to ask questions. To provide a positive environment for dialogue and investigation. To be partners in this endeavor. This is to experience. To expand someones knowledge. To mole young minds. To educate is to learn. 6. What is the relationship between teaching and learning? I believe that the relationship between teaching and learning is just that; a relationship. I believe that being an early childhood teacher really means being an adult who has a strong relationship

Reggio Reflections with a group of children and that within that strong relationship the teacher is able to facilitate the learning. Teaching can be in the form of having the right materials available for children to discover and learn. It can be a peer teaching another peer based on their knowledge and skill. It can be an adult scaffolding the childs skill, development, and thinking by building upon their strengths and interests. As teachers educate, they must be conscious of how a student learns by observing them, documenting their results, assessing, and evaluating their progress. This will determine if their children in their class are learning the material being taught. A good teacher also needs to build a relationship of trust and assure that children have the opportunity to learn from others, make mistakes, have successes, and are taught how to research and construct their own knowledge. When I think of teaching I think of learning. The two go hand in hand. Without learning you could not teach. In order to learn something, I think it must be taught. However, there are many different ways and kinds of teaching. I think people can teach themselves, I think people teach people, and I think experience is a teacher. I don't think you learn something without having been taught in one of these ways. Teachers are ones that we are learning from, we are learning from teaching. I feel that teaching guides learning, when you are teaching a child you are playing a role in their learning by being a support system. The relationship between teaching and learning is very close. In order to be a good teacher, you must always be learning. You are learning new teaching strategies, new technology, new ways of classroom management, etc. I believe that in order to be a great teacher, you have to be open to changing your ways and to constantly learning new things. Strong A child can be taught by things in their environment and that can be the teacher They need to be motivated to learn and be able to connect with an experience Meaningful A child needs to be taught something to learn i. By the environment ii. Another peer iii. A teacher iv. A parent Anyone can teach or learn The teacher is always learning through/from the child. Both aspects build off of one another. 7. What is the relationship between theory and practice?

Reggio Reflections I believe that a theory is an idea, while practice is testing that idea. Learning takes place individually. Most often, teaching is meant for a group of people. However, lessons are taught every day that teachers dont even know that theyre teaching! *wing theories about how children learn gives strategies to implement into practice in order to educate and further development I am not actually sure about this one but I would think that theory is how you think something should work from start to completion, and practice is how it actually turns out. You have to have a theory to have a practice. There has to be a theory so that you can have a practice. They go together without one you cannot have the other. Theory provides insight and ideas based on research and experience. When a person embraces a theory, I feel he/she will put that theory into practice. It will shape how the person views those he/she is educating, how the environment is set up, and how the person believes his/her "students" will learn best. Theory drives practice. Theory is an idea used to explain something and practice is something that you are doing every day. Theory is what we believe in and the way we feel things should be done and practice, is how we carry out our theory in the classroom. Theory and practice go together; it's important to have both. Having a strong theory as a background is great, but it is equally important to be able to effectively put it into practice daily. It is important to know theory so that you can use it in the classroom Practice is what you do with a technique, learning experience They go hand in hand Theory is a reflection of observations. Who has created this theory? Why has this theory been created? Will it stand up to years of practice and scrutiny? Practice is what we decide is best for children at this point in time, due to change as needed. Teachers can discuss practices, use practices, and tweak them according to their environment. I believe that practice is the process, an ongoing collaboration, not the end result. Theory is saying it, while practice is doing what you say. Theory is a way of predicting or hypothesizing while practice is a way of applying and doing. 8. What is the role of school in society? I believe that, unfortunately, the role of school in today's society is one that focuses on direct teaching and testing of children. I believe that children are not able to express their own ideas nor challenge the ideas of others within the learning environment. There is a definite hierarchy with the "correct person" being the teacher in all aspects and the student being "the learner".

Reggio Reflections school in our society seems to require children to follow specific rules, teaches based on a curriculum in a book rather than childrens individual levels and strengths, is very structured school helps children understand the society in which they live School provides a place for children to go while parents work School brings children together, gives them a community of which to belong, teaches them socialization and educates them on skills appropriate at each age. School prepares students for society so they can enter into the community as prepared and educated citizens. School has changed over the years and societys view of school has been variable. To teach children, not only the educational skills they will need to carry them into adulthood and their future career, but also teach them social skills, and the importance of caring about themselves and the needs of others. In my reflection of how school and society go together you have to have school to educate people in a society. Because education is a very important for an individuals success in life. Education provides students teaching skills that prepare them physically, mentally and socially for the world of work in their later lives. I think school is a place where we learn the skills necessary to function in and contribute to society. School is something that society looks at as a necessity. Society sees school as a place for children to gain knowledge and develop the skills they see as necessary in life. I think that school is a very important part of society, but I feel that it often gets overlooked. In today's society, an education is so important, I believe that communities should rally around schools and support and reach out to them more. It is valued as important but very drill and kill type of teaching Everyone is so worried about the product and not the process that got the children that far Scores are so important I feel that early child is beginning to become more supported Important to teach your children readiness for the outside world To provide structure and safety for children in which they may gain knowledge and skills. To foster dialogue and caring relationships with themselves and each other. To foster positive disposition towards investigation, discoveries, creations documentations.

Reggio Reflections School holds multiple meanings. It could be a safe haven. A place to explore and investigate. A place to teach and to learn. A place to make mistakes (child). 9. What is the relationship between school and research? I am not confident that there is any relationship between school and research other than use of standardized testing and using those results for whatever reason they are used for. Im not sure. How much research is done during school time verses research done in small group or individual sessions? What is the relationship between How has the content of teaching changed with the times? Schools should be teaching children the skill and value of research from the time children are young so that they can continue to use and improve their research skills for the rest of their lives In my reflection of how school and society go together you have to have school to educate people in a society. Because education is a very important for an individuals success in life. Education provides students teaching skills that prepare them physically, mentally and socially for the world of work in their later lives. I think you should research in school. Research involves hands-on experiences and allows us (children included) to think deeply and re-evaluate our thinking and knowledge. Schools are a place where research is taught as well as encouraged. Research helps the schools determine what is important to teach, it also helps them determine different ways of teaching different topics to help students learn. I feel in our age group it is very important We are researching the children every day Temperaments Learning style Academically Socially The relationship between the two needs to be strong in order to scaffold your learning as well as the childs I feel that research in older grades is more about the grade level and the expectation and little about the individual child Teachers are researchers as well as educators. School is a perfect environment for teachers to share their research with others. School is a safe haven for children to do their own investigations for themselves and with others. By researching, we are able to find answers to our questions about young children. School is a way of exploring and testing our research.

Reggio Reflections 10. And what is the relationship between schools for young children and research? I believe the relationship between schools for young children and research is that there is a constant yearning to know more about the child, the development of the child, the best way to teach a child, the results of a certain teaching or learning style. Early childhood educators are looking to that research to give the young child the best opportunities to build their foundation both cognitively and socially. Im not sure. Perhaps children in this age are more able to spontaneously research by performing hypotheses and testing their ideas. Children can be taught research skills as a young preschooler doing project work and can then further their research skills in the later years of school and throughout their lives. There has to be research to inform policy and practices of teaching and learning. Without research there would not be schools. You have to research how things are done before you can implement them in schools. Schools for young children help build the basis for them to be able to develop research skills. Research helps us guide the different developmental stages of childrens, it also gives us more information on the way children learn and guides us to what we feel is the best practice for the young children we teach. Same as above Children are natural investigators and scientists. Teachers are in partnership with children to delve into questions and to discover meaningful information. 11. What is the relationship between school and education? I believe that at the elementary age, school is a place that children have to go and have to be in a specific role, which from my perspective makes the learning less relevant in that the children see it as a chore and often cannot wait to be done. The relationship in early childhood school is that education is happening all of the time and in many different ways. A "Let's do life together" approach. It is a place where children can learn in their own ways and at their own pace without the pressure to learn so we can move on. Children are getting an education as they attend school. They are learning more than just the content areas. They are learning the good, the bad and the ugly about all aspects of their experience. It is the schools responsibility to provide a quality education (both intellectual and personal/social) for young children, teens, and young adults.

Reggio Reflections I feel that the relationship between schools for young children and research would be about the same as with older children. There would just have to be different things to research according to the age of the children that the research is being done on. What is the relationship between school and education? They go together without a school you would not have education as we think of it. You have to educate the children to have a school. School is a place that we have sit up to educate children. Many people might think you have to go to school to get an education. I've heard many times, "I'm going to school to get an education." I think people can get an education through the experiences they have without going through the institution of "school." All people have many different experiences that provide them with an education tradition "school" probably never would. I think many people view school as a place to be educated in reading, writing, and arithmetic, but where do you learn about yourself and relating to others? School should be a place where you learn reading, writing, and arithmetic while also learning about yourself and others--school she teach us how to be "whole". School is where children are getting their education, but not their entire education. Children are getting educations at home too. School is a place where children should be given the opportunities to gain knowledge about the world around them. The relationship between school and education is traditionally seen as you go to school to get an education. School is where you get an education, yes; but you can get more than an education from school, and you can get an education from other places than school. School and education go hand in hand Children can learn outside of school as well It is wonderful to teach and support parents to follow the same routines/learning strategies at home School and education are about meaningful relationships. Knowledge is gained through meaningful relationships. Education enables us form more complex and meaningful connections with our families, our communities, the world and ourselves. School is where you can receive an education. School is education all around, not just for the children but adults as well.
