Time : 03 Hours Maximum Marks : 75

Instruction to Candidates:
1) Section - A is compulsory.
2) Attempt any Nine questions from Section - B.

Section - A
Q1) (15 x 2 = 30)
a) What are the reasons for using layered protocols?
b) State the meaning of the following IP addresses :
(i) An address with a net id of all 0s.
(ii) An address with a host id of all 0s.
c) Why has the PCM sampling rate been set at 125 µ sec?
d) With the aid of sketches, explain the effect on a transmitted binary signal
of the following :
(i) Attenuation.
(ii) Delay distortion.
e) Explain signal propagation delay.
f) What are the advantages of FDDI over token ring?
g) Why data link protocols almost always put the CRC in a trailer rather
than in the header?
h) What are the functions of Data Link Layer?
i) Explain the meaning of the term ‘reliable stream service’ and how it differs
from a basic message transfer service.

P.T.O.
j) Explain wave Division Multiplexing.
k) Compare Upward and downward multiplexing with reference to the
transport layer.
1) Suppose there is a heavy traffic on both a CSMA/CD LAN and a token
ring LAN. A station on which system is more likely to wait longer to send
a frame? Why?
m) Give an example in which multicast address might be beneficial.
n) How long does it take to transmit x KB over a y-Mbps link? Give your
answer as a ratio of x and y.
o) What is the purpose of data modem?

Section - B
(9 x 5 = 45)
Q2) Besides bandwidth and latency which other parameters are needed to give a
good characterization of QOS (quality of service) offered by a network used
for digitized voice traffic.

Q3) Show by calculation how many hosts per network each IP address class (A,
B, and C only) can have?

Q4) Compare the channel requirements for voice traffic with the requirements for
the real-time transmission of music, in terms of bandwidth, delay, and jitter.
What would have to improve? By approximately how much? Could any channel
requirements be relaxed?

Q5) Suppose you are doing RSA encryption with p = 13, q = 7, and e = 5.
(a) Find the decryption exponent d.
(b) Encrypt the message m = 7.

Q6) Explain ISO-OSI reference model for a computer network and compare it
with TCP/IP model. How is physical address converted into IP address and
vice-versa? Write also the name of protocol by which these can be done.

Q7) Compare the following communication switching techniques

(i) Datagram Packet Switching
(ii) Virtual-circuits.

J-3395[S-1251] 2
Q8) Discuss the following questions related to the transport layer :
(i) Many features of the transport layer (e.g. flow control and reliable delivery)
are also handled by the data link layer. Is this duplication of effort? Why
or Why not?
(ii) What the problems with 2-way handshake are in connect establishment
and connection termination?

Q9) Suppose we want transmit the message 1011001001001011 and protect it

from errors using the CRC-8 polynomial x8 + x2 + x1 +1.
(i) Use polynomial long division to determine the message that should be
transmitted.
(ii) Suppose the leftmost bit of the message is inverted due to noise on the
transmission link. What is the result of the receiver’s calculation?

Q10) Suppose you are designing a sliding window protocol (Go Back N) for a
1-Mbps point-to-point link to the moon, which has one way latency of
1.25 seconds. Assuming that each frame carries 1KB of data, what is the
minimum number of bits you need for the sequence number?

Q11) A 1000-bit block of data is to be transmitted between two DTEs. Determine

the ratio of the propagation delay to the transmission delay, a, for the following
types of data link :
(i) 100 m of twisted-pair wire and a transmission rate of 10 Kbps.
(ii) 10 Km of coaxial cable and a transmission rate of 1 Mbps.

Q12) For the network given in Figure 1, show how the link-state algorithm builds
the routing table for node D.

Q13) Why are synchronous modems required for medium and high speed
applications?
