MSBL / MABL World Series Spotlight on

THURSDAY OCTOBER 20th, 2011

Fred Martinez (35+ Colorado Bandits)

Fred Martinez was playing adult baseball before he joined MSBL. He had experienced frustration in communicating with the other adult league in Denver. With exciting and innovative ideas to improve the players experience, grow the number of teams, and make the league more equitable for everyone, he found their national leadership unresponsive and very inflexible. His first contact with Steve Sigler at a local league meeting convinced him this organization was what he was looking for. His adult team had been playing at such a high level that their games were not at all competitive. Among his good ideas was to break up a heavily talented team and build several teams, each with a core of talent. This would insure everyone having a good time and promote parity among teams. After winning two championships in the other league, he now gets a thrill every time he brings a new player to play on real professional fields in a high quality tournament. Freddie is a second generation baseball player who watched his dad experience success in the sport and became his idol, both as a man and a ballplayer. A former veteran who served overseas, Freddie looked for adult baseball opportunities everywhere he traveled. Having played high school and college ball, he knew the value in bringing his family to earlier World Series tournaments. Now in his 12th year, his daughter will get to see her dad play in Arizona for the first time since she started school. As a high school baseball and softball coach, he gets great enjoyment out of seeing young players develop skills and a love of the game. Freds desire to give back to the people who helped him find a place in the Men's Senior Baseball League has led him to share that feeling by working with our organization, either locally or nationally. Finding the right organization has made all the difference. Western Bar B Q - Friday October 21st Tempe Diablo Stadium (5:00p - 9:00p)

35+ / 55+ Teams Still Hoping For A Playoff Spot In Must Win Situation MSBL / MABL Force Play Slide Rule Helps Keep Injuries To A Minimum
By Tom Prendergast

For all practical purposes, the playoffs are starting today for several teams that are in a must win situation. And as always, teams that allow the fewest runs have the best shot at advancing to the next round. Its important for all team mangers to verify their teams runs allowed and if they are incorrect, to notify the WS staff, so we can make sure the totals posted are right. The intent of the force-play-slide rule is to ensure the safety of the defensive player. This is a safety as well as an interference rule. Whether the defense could have completed the double play has no bearing on the applicability of this rule. This rule pertains to a force-play situation at any base, regardless of the number of outs. The exception to this rule occurs if a runner slides away from the direction of the fielder to avoid making contact or altering the play of the fielder. Any fielder may use a decoy only if it serves a strategic purpose. For example, if a fielder, who sees a man attempting to steal a base during a hit and run, looks upward into the sky in an attempt to fool the runner into thinking the ball is in the air, when in fact the ball is on the ground. This is a good baseball play and one that could keep the runner or runners from advancing. On Friday night at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the MSBL / MABL World Series will host a Welcome Bar B Q for all players, from 5:00pm til 9:00pm.

Remember - No Drinking or Tobacco products are allowed on the fields during the MSBL / MABL World Series.
