WHAT IS THE 1000 SMILES
DENTAL PROJECT?
This is the world’s largest international
humanitarian dental project administered by
Great Shape Inc, based in San Francisco, and
operated in
collaboration with
International Smile
Power Foundation,
based in Seattle,
Sandals Resorts
International and
Jamaica’s Ministry of Health.
In 2008, the project will celebrate its 6th
anniversary. The project provides dental heath
services and education to over 10,000
Jamaicans annually. We are able to provide
these services through volunteers that span the
continental US, Canada and the UK. In Jamaica,
there is only 1 dentist for every 80,000 residents.
The primary services we provide are:
Extractions; cleanings; fillings;
sealants; and oral health
education.
We serve both children and adults.
Many of our patients have never seen
a dentist before.
WHEN DO WE GO ON PROJECT?
1000 Smiles Dental Project is executed during
the months of October and November. We
create 4 portable dental clinics in the rural
communities of the areas we serve. Exact dates
are
posted on our website (gsjamaica.org).
Each year there are 3 sessions in 3 separate
areas to choose from: St. Ann (Ocho Rios),
Hanover (Negril) and St. James (Montego Bay).
In addition to the clinics, our education team
goes into schools that surround the communities
we serve to provide dental health education and
distribute free toothbrushes and paste.
All volunteers register for 1 or 2 weeks of service.
Volunteers work Mondays to Fridays 7am -5pm.
Week-ends and evenings are free, with plenty of
time to enjoy the best Jamaica has to offer.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Above all else we want volunteers who have a
desire to make a change in the lives of Jamaican
children and their families. We need dental and
non-dental professionals to join our team.

Non-dental volunteers are assigned to support
roles as sterilization, education or patient flow.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
EACH VOLUNTEER PAYS THEIR OWN
AIRFARE, A $600 PROJECT FEE AND IS
RESPONSIBLE TO GET DONATED OR BUY
AND SHIP (TO MIAMI) THE SUPPLIES THEY
WILL NEED TO DO THEIR WORK. GREAT
SHAPE OFFERS A SPONSORSHIP
PROGRAM THAT VOLUNTEERS MAY ELECT
TO PARTICIPATE IN. IN THIS FUNDRAISING
PROGRAM, VOLUNTEERS ASK THEIR
FAMILY, FRIENDS AND OTHERS TO
SPONSOR THEM IN RETURN FOR A
CHANCE TO WIN A VACATION IN JAMAICA.
WHERE DO WE STAY?
All 1000 Smiles Dental Project volunteers are
hosted by Sandal Resorts Intl. at their resorts in the
areas we do work.
These luxury all-inclusive
accommodations feature
free food, beverages and
resort activities, your’s to enjoy when you’re not
working. All volunteers are placed 3 to a room, so
we encouraged volunteers to form their own groups
of 3. Sandals Resorts is a Jamaican owned
company and is a major partner in this project.
