Chapter one: Complex Numbers.


The real number system, Exponents and In this chapter, we shall learn the following properties of the complex number system: Sums and Products, Algebraic properties, Moduli and Conjugates, Triangle inequality, Polar coordinates and Eulers Formula, Product and quotients in exponential form, Roots of complex numbers, and Regions in the complex plane. Chapter 2: Analytic Functions.


In this chapter, we shall learn some properties of functions of a complex variables. The main properties that we shall cover are the following: Functions of a complex variables, Mappings, Limits, Theorems on limits, Limit at infinity, Continuity, Derivatives, Differentiation formulas, Cauchy-Riemann equations, Sufficient conditions for differentiability, Polar coordinates, Analytic functions, Reflection principle, Harmonic functions. Proposed Problems. Page 31-33: 1-4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13. Page 42-43: all problems. Page 47-48: all problems. Page 54-55: all problems. Page 62-64: 1-14. Expected time. 4 weeks.

Chapter 3: Elementary Functions


In this chapter, we shall study the main properties of the following functions: The exponential function, Trigonometric functions, Hyperbolic functions, Logarithmic function and its branches, Some identities involving logarithms, Complex exponents, Inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. Chapter 4: Integrals

In this chapter, we shall study the theory of integration of functions of a complex variables. The main topics that we shall cover are as follows: Complex valued functions, Contours, Contour integrals, Antiderivatives, Cauchy-Goursat Theorem, Simply and multiply connected domains, Cauchy Integral formula, Derivatives of analytic functions, Liouvilles theorem and the fundamental theorem of algebra, Maximal moduli of functions. Chapter 5: Series
The main goal of this chapter is to prove that a function of complex variables is analytic if and only if it has a Taylor series expansion.. The main topics that we shall cover are as follows: Convergence of sequences and series, Taylor series, Laurent series, Absolute and uniform convergence of power series, Integration and differentiation of power series, Uniqueness of series representations, Multiplication and division of power series. Proposed Problems. Page 142-143: all problems. Page 149: all problems. Page 156-158: 1-8. Page 172-176. 1-6, 9-13. Expected time. 3 weeks.

Remarks
(1) First exam is expected to cover Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. (2) Second exam is expected to cover Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. (3) Final exam will cover all the material. (4) The date of the first, second, and final exams will be announced later. (5) It should be understood that the above proposed problems are the minimum a student should do. (6) The attendance of lectures of the course is obligatory according to the University Rules.
