Do you like taking your dog for a walk before work? How about going for a bike ride on the weekend? If you do, then give it up for your bones, muscles, and joints, because without them, you wouldnt be going anywhere! The following discussion questions and activities will help your students understand and appreciate the work of their bones, muscles, and joints.
Standards
This guide correlates with the following National Health Education Standards:
Students will: Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. Demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health. Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks. Demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
Discussion Questions
Note: The following questions are written in language appropriate for sharing with your students. 1. What are bones? What jobs do bones do? Can you name some of the bones you have in your body? Where can you find them? Bones are so hard! Maybe it would be easier for people to move around without them. Do you agree or disagree? Why? Whats a joint? Where do you have joints in your body? How do joints move? What would happen if you didnt have joints? Youve got more than 600 muscles in your body, but what can they do? Where can you find muscles in your body? Are all of the muscles in your body alike? Why or why not? Ouch! Have you ever broken a bone? How about strained or sprained a muscle? Tell the story of what happened. How did you get better? Your bones, muscles, and joints keep you moving and grooving. How can you take care of each of these important body parts?

A Winning Combination
Objectives:
Students will: Learn how bones, muscles, and joints work together to move the body
Materials:
Computer with Internet access Word processing program, or pen and paper

Activity:
You just kicked the game-winning goal, Mr. Knee Joint! How do you feel? Great. But you know, I couldnt have done it without my bones, cartilage, muscles, ligaments, and tendons As the radio announcer for Body Parts Sports Network, youve seen a lot of great sports moments, but that goal kicked by number 44, Knee Joint, was one of the most exciting! It was so exciting, in fact, that you want to record the play-by-play commentary in writing so that it can be placed in the Joints in Sports Hall of Fame. Before you start writing, check out the articles at KidsHealth to learn more about how bones, muscles, and joints work together to move the body. Then write your play-by-play commentary describing how the parts of the knee joint collaborated to make the game-winning goal. Include the following information: The names of the bones that meet at the knee joint; The jobs of all the parts of the knee (bones, cartilage, muscles, ligaments, and tendons); and How these parts worked together to move the leg and kick the goal.
Extension:
1. The skeletal muscles in Mr. Knee Joints leg arent the only muscles working hard to help his body run smoothly. Select a different type of muscle in the human body, either smooth muscle or cardiac muscle, and design a sports award that acknowledges the work these muscles do to help us play hard!

Activity:
Test tubes fizzing. Bunsen burners heating mysterious liquids. Electricity sizzling along wires. Youve just entered the laboratory of the mad scientist, Dr. Build-A-Bone! Dr. Build-A-Bone has dedicated his life to discovering what mysterious substances are in bones, and to developing a process for growing new bone. For years scientists have been searching for his laboratory now you are the lucky one who has found it! But you dont have much time to look around, because the mad doctor will soon return. You grab some documents and make a quick getaway. Once home, though, you discover that Dr. Build-A-Bones papers are incomplete, and some of the information is missing (see the Dr. Build-A-Bone handout). Use the articles at KidsHealth to help you fill in the blanks.
Extensions:
1. Dr. Build-A-Bone has not yet developed a process for growing new bones, so youd better take care of the ones you have! Brainstorm a list of all of the ways you can protect your bones. Make a poster to hang in your classroom, reminding your classmates of ways to keep their bones safe and healthy.
