Comments:
This paper reports catalytic and non-catalytic processes of direct conversion of methane using a
dielectric barrier discharge at ambient temperature. A preliminary study was done by comparing
the catalytic activities of different metal catalysts at the same plasma system. Recently, the author
published a similar paper (Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry 2006, 15, 87−92. Song, H. K. is the
corresponding author, Antonius Indarto is the first author). The experimental setup (Figure 1) is
similar to the reported figure (p88, Figure 1) in previously paper (Journal of Natural Gas
Chemistry 2006, 15, 87−92). Figure 2 is identical to the previous Figure 2 (p88). Figure 3 is
nearly identical (the data are the same) to Figure 3 and Figure 5 (p89 and p90) in the above
mentioned paper. As a consequence, to publish this work as a communication is not appropriate.
However, the main theme (the main goal is to identify the metal catalyst components which can
influence the reactions in the room-temperature plasma condition) and the findings (among all
metal catalysts, only Pt and Fe can be activated by plasma by showing a unique characteristic on
the products distribution) of this work are of interest and publishable. I can recommend
publication of this work as a FULL PAPER only after the work is placed in its proper context by
clarification of the prior work cited above and attention to the points enumerated below:

1. Characterizations of the catalysts should be included.

2. Many kinds of Al2O3 and zeolite are available. The type of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and
zeolite should be mentioned.
3. More references should be cited.
