LYRICARITURE
When words are harder to find…

Pacman Evening
November 19, 2006 • No Comments

(November 19, 2006) It’s unusually cold for an autumn evening when you live this far south almost next to the gulf of
Mexico. Known for its bayous and wetlands, Louisiana is hardly a place to expect cold fronts this early part of the
year. Oh yes, its cold out there and I don’t even have my jacket ready for such a biting weather… Right after Church I
went straight to my friend’s house as we - friends - were all invited for a gathering to watch the 3rd Pacquiao-Morales
boxing match right in the heart of the desert city, Vegas… Right off the bat we were met by stomach-crunching smell
of sirloin strips and ribeye sweating it out on top of the medium sized grill just outside the foyer in front of the house.
A minute or two later I found myself stripping little pieces of the steak and slam dunked them straight to my palette
even before horn blew signaling official dinner time. Oh my, was it delicious?!!! And filling, especially when you
hadn’t eaten lunch and it was kind of getting a little late for my out-of-the-normal-schedule approach to meals as a
blood sugar patient. It wasn’t long after, the official food-munching unfolded.

Fil-am sluggist, Viloria, out of Hawaii, went pound for pound with Mexican standout and current title-holder, Romero,
all the way up to the end of 12th round only to come up with a draw and failed to claim the title he lost about a year
ago from another boxer. Very disheartening indeed when you’re pulling for someone of your race to win the
bout… though the people who came to watch with me had this feeling that the other fighter was a lot more prepared
for the fight just by the look at how the match unfolded. Not enough follow through, they say, when our guy was lucky
enough to hit some big shots and even managed the referee to count against the other boxer, twice! Oh yes, twice! But
the opponent seemed undaunted in spite all the hits he took and even showed his fervor to win or retain his crown. It
was basically a so-so fight and to not knock out the reigning champ in such a heralded match, i.e., the main event, one
can always expect the current titlist to keep his prized possession, the world champion’s belt. “Lutong macao,” they
always say, but that’s just the name of the game and has been that way since time immemorial. And there it was, a
draw… and the Mexican modern gladiator prevailed!

The aural dimension of nature creeps like a fog so vivid yet lucidly swallowed in the veinstream of one’s
consciousness. Whisper of a cool morning intent on waking up the pretentiously dreaming pysche of an unknown and
yet one who’s well aware of its much publicized claim of citizenship in the sphere of human existence. Colours
that welcome passage to the deep. Greens that no artist would ever trod much less trace. Reflections that no one
ever thought existed. Shadows that kept their motions with the imaginative mind. Echoes stuck so deep in a restless
soul. Emotions dancing with wolves and strange tropical creatures caused by self-served bamboo-like pipes. Eared
walls and watchful eyes wrapped in the wee hours of the night, pretending to care but seriously and curiously taking
inventory of what’s-for-desert-like attack on dignity and the human soul.

Things must be for real when one begins to identify the sensible from the surreal… the shape from the imagined… the
sound from the voice. When the bumps and bruises are there for the mirrors to capture and for a friend to nurse to
with that little knowledge of quack “medicine(ry)”, then one ought to seek refuge from the commonality of pressumed
“nuthood” to a much tangible sense of cry for help… huh?

REMINISCING

Words and music by J. Roel Lungay

It seems like only yesterday when I wrote my very first song

I still remember how I felt when I struck my very first chord

I fell in love with the melody that I still hold today

The words so full of mem’ries of how life used to be

Refrain 1:

LYRICARITURE Page 3 of 4

We’ve walked through life so slowly

But we’ve wandered far and free

We were different and so crazy

No moments dull and gray…

Remember how we used to sing and serenade the girls

We drowned ourselves in booze and beers until the break of day

Our lives were full of hopes and dream but we didn’t really care

The “clouds of non-existence” by then had wrapped our minds and wills.

Refrain 2:

We’ve walked through life so slowly

But we’ve wandered far and free

We were different and so crazy

No moments dull and gray…

We traveled life so easy

We’ve wandered fancy-free

Outrageous and so silly

So different from today!
