Play Production Project For this project, you will prepare to direct a scene from Macbeth.

You will need to decide the following:

When and where will the scene be set? What time period? Season? Will it be in outer space? New York in the 1950s? 18th century Denmark? Las Vegas? What about the scene and characters influenced your decisions about setting? Cite evidence from the play that influenced your choice. What is the importance of this scene to the rest of the play? What impact does it have on the characters?

Based on your decisions about setting, you will: -design a set -create a costume for a character in that scene -choose or create fabric samples that represent the colors and textures you want in the costume Once you have completed these components, you will write a short paper that answers the bulleted and bolded questions above plus:
Explain how your costume and set design choices add to the effect of the scene, our understanding of the character and your setting choices using evidence from the play.

You will present your project to the class upon its completion. Benchmarks (rubric for benchmarks is on page 3): Rlit 5, 3a Explore possible perspectives in a literary text Com 1, 3a Incorporates quotes correctly in own writing
Com 2, 3a Uses evidence appropriate to genre, purpose, audience, and theme Com 4, 3a Independently develops writing focus OC 1, 3a Understands and employs the guidelines for a polished and engaging presentation (e.g. eye contact, volume, posture, visuals, fielding questions, etc.)

Writing the Paper for the Production Project Your paper will need to answer the following questions. You should have a minimum of 3 MEAL paragraphs Paragraph 1:

When and where will the scene be set? What time period? What will your stage (props, design, etc) look like? What influenced your decisions about setting? How will they help a modern audience understand and connect to the play? Cite evidence from the play that influenced your choices.

Paragraph 2: Explain how your costume and fabric design choices add to the effect of the scene and our understanding of the character using evidence from the play.

Paragraph 3: Explain why and how this scene is important to the play and what impact it has on the characters.

MEAL paragraph Review: Main Idea: Your topic sentence Evidence: Supporting quote from the play Analysis: In your own words, how the quote supports the topic sentence (your idea for the costume and scene) Link: Transition to the next paragraph or connection back to the topic sentence

A modern take on Macbeth. What year and location do you think this version of the play was set during?

A traditional take on a costume for the play Twelfth Night. Notice the fabric sample! You will have access to fabrics for this projectuse them to give a sense of texture, pattern and color!

A very traditional set for a play

A minimalist set. Notice that light and backdrop become very important.

An abstract conceptual set. What is the pattern on the panels? What do you think they represent?
