The world of work is changing. Students graduating 20 years ago were encouraged to choose an appropriate occupation. They expected that by getting the right training and by working hard, they would advance through their career andeventuallyretire. Today you face a more complex economy. You will make a whole series of career decisions across your lifetime that will include going back to school or learning on the job in order to adapt to rapidly changing markets. Utahs Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs will prepare you to engage in the work of the 21st century. We are depending on your skills, talents, and knowledge! Through career exploration and career preparation, CTE will help guide you as you make critical decisions about your future. So, start now and study, plan and prepare for your future. Career and Technical Education will give you the edge! Best wishes for success, Did you know that 90 percent of the fastest growing jobs and over 60 percent of all new jobs will require that you have some additional education and training beyond high school? This means that you will need a certicate or associate degree, but not necessarily a bachelors degree.

Have you heard about the Utah Career and Technical Education (CTE) Skill Certicate Program? The CTE Skill Certicate Program provides you with the opportunity to receive a skill certicate, which veries technical skill attainment, by taking a CTE course and demonstrating your skill.
As you participate in CTE courses you are encouraged to take tests in the area in which you are studying. Once you successfully complete a specic skill certicate test, you will be issued a CTE Skill Certicate. While the assessment system is not a formal certication program, the certicates issued can be used when seeking a job or in applying for further education and training as evidence of your accomplishments.
UtahFutures.org will help you identify occupations that use the skills you have and those that you want to obtain. By using the SKILLS Assessment you will see how skills transfer between occupations. This will help you as you explore occupations, identify ways to modify your career direction, or prepare for a job interview. The Social Media REVOLUTION

Communication has drastically changed as a result of the social media revolution. This dramatic shift has been called the biggest shift since the industrial revolution. (Just to refresh your memory, the industrial revolution was about 150 years ago when production changed from hand and home to machine and factory. Yes, it was a huge deal, having truly changed American society and economy, and paving the way for the innovation that the U. S. has forever after been famous.) Who are you talking to? What type of electronic device do y you you use to communicate? Where do you get your information? How do you ? communicate with family and h friends? Safety net
Take these tips from the Federal Trade Commission to help ensure your safety as you socialize online: Think about keeping some control over the information you post. Consider restricting access to your page to a select group of people, for example, your friends from school, your club, your team, your community groups, or your family. Ashton Kutcher and Ellen Degeneres have more Twitter followers than the entire population of Ireland, Norway, and Panama! Be cautious about posting information that could be used to identify you or locate you ofine. This could include the name of your school, sports team, clubs, and where you work or hang out. Make sure your screen name doesnt say too much about you. Dont use your name, your age, or your hometown. Post only information that you are comfortable with others seeing and knowing about you. Many people can see your page, including your parents, your teachers, the police, the college you might want to apply to next year, or the job you might want to apply for in ve years. Remember that once you post information online, you cant take it back. Even if you delete the information from a site, older versions exist on other peoples computers. Consider not posting your photo. It can be altered and broadcast in ways you may not be happy about. If you do post one, ask yourself whether its one your mom would display in the living room. There are over 200 million blogs with 54 percent of bloggers posting content or tweets daily. Flirting with strangers online could have serious consequences. Because some people lie about who they really are, you never really know who youre dealing with. Be wary if a new online friend wants to meet you in person. Before you decide to meet someone, do your research: see what background you can dig up through online search engines or through friends. If you decide to meet them, be smart about it. Meet in a public place, during the day, with friends you trust. Tell an adult where youre going, and when you expect to be back. Trust your gut if you have suspicions. If you feel threatened by someone or uncomfortable because of something online, tell an adult you trust and report it to the police and the social networking site.

Gather Information for your College Application

Identify your short list of schools to which you will apply. Obtain applications for the schools in which youre interested, and know the deadlines. Complete FAFSA and other nancial aid forms as needed. Request copies of your high school transcript. Take ACT and/or SAT and assure scores are sent to colleges of interest. Complete AP courses and exams. Obtain letters of recommendation. Write application essay and get others to proofread and offer suggestions.

Find the occupation in the Career Chart (pp. 18-52) that ts each description. How to use the chart on pages 18-52
Star Rating
The Utah Department of Workforces Services created the star rating system to rank jobs based on both outlook (90 percent on the number of annual openings projected for the occupation, and 10 percent on the growth rate) and wages (median annual wages for the occupation in Utah). Five Star jobs are those with the strongest employment outlook and high wages, with four, three, two and one star ratings applied as the rankings go down. Please note, however, that occupations are grouped by training level, so the wages for a high paying job that requires just short-term on-the-job training will not match the wages of a high paying job that requires a college education. Also, a ve star rating does not necessarily mean a job will be easy to nd since that will depend on the number of qualied applicants available to ll openings. Think demand vs. supply.

Interest Code
Also known as Holland codes, the interest codes assigned to occupations in the chart come from O*NET. You may have taken an interest assessment to help you understand your personal career interest code, and that will help you nd occupations that are suited to your interests. For more information on Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic (A), Social (S), Enterprising (E), and Conventional (C) interest types (and code combinations), talk to your school counselor and complete the Interest Proler in UtahFutures.
Statewide Hourly Wages

The rst amount listed in this column is for inexperienced workers and reects the average wage of the bottom third of the people working in that occupation in Utah. The second amount in the column is the median wage, representing the middle wage in the full range of wages paid to workers in that occupation in Utah.
