_ Floor Finish >> Purposes / functions

Floors are a major functional component of a building. They are its primary surface, subject to water, grit, dust and the abrasive and penetrating action of feet and furniture. They must be designed to deal with problems of skid resistance, sanitation and noise reduction between floors of a building. Floors have a lot of to do with our visual and tactile appreciation of a building. We sense their colors, patterns, and textures, their feel underfoot, and the noises they make in response to footsteps. Floors also interact in various ways with light: some floor materials give mirror like reflections, some give diffuse reflections or none at all. Dark flooring materials absorbs most of the light incident upon them, whereas light materials reflect most incident light and help create a brighter room. Therefore, surface finishes have a critical influence on the aesthetic qualities of a space. In the selection and use of a finish material, we should carefully consider color, texture, pattern and the way it meets and joins with the other material. If a finish material has modular characteristics, then its unit dimensions can be used to regulate the dimensions of a wall, floor, of ceiling surface.

Description

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from regional or, rarely, contact metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks. This metamorphic process causes a complete re-crystallization of the original rock.
>>

It is made up of calcium carbonate; it comes in numerous colors, white, grey, green

>>

It is a hardwearing beautiful product, expensive to purchase.

>> >> >>

It is cold and noisy underfoot.

From a designers point of view like granite it has a timeless quality.

This is a luxury floor covering and one that needs careful consideration before specification, as it is an expensive product.
>>

The floor structure needs consideration, as it is very heavy.

>>

Once laid, it will last for a very long time, as it is hardwearing and resistant to chemicals.
>> >> >>

_ Floor Finish >> Tiles

A tile is a manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as ceramic, stone, metal, or even glass. Tiles are generally used for covering roofs, floors, and walls, showers, or other objects such as tabletops.

Tiles are often used to form wall and floor coverings, and can range from simple square tiles to complex mosaics. Tiles are most often made from ceramic, with a hard glaze finish, but other materials are also commonly used, such as glass, marble, granite, slate, and reformed ceramic slurry, which is cast in a mold and fired.

Rubber floor tiles have a variety of uses, both in residential and commercial settings. They are especially useful in situations where it is desired to have hightraction floors or protection for an easily breakable floor. Some common uses include flooring of garage, workshops, patios, swimming pool decks, sport courts, gyms, and dance floors.

Quarry Tiles

Quarry tiles being famous for their strength and weight can be obtain in many shades and thickness as well as none slip.
>>

Quarry tiles are produced from dried clay fired in kiln for a number of hours at temperatures exceeding 1100C thus giving its classic warm orange shade.
>>

Used mainly for floor tiles in areas such as shower rooms, food preparation areas, factory floors, kitchens and dining areas.

Ceramic Tiles

Glazing ceramic tile creates a durable surface that is easy to clean, resists stains and scratches, doesnt fade and is slip-resistant.
>>

Identical to unglazed except a liquid glass is applied to the tile at very high temperatures. This creates a hard, non-porous surface.
>>

Ceramic tile includes a wide variety of clay products fired into thin units which are set in beds of mortar or mastic with the joints between tiles grouted.

Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain is a ceramic material made by heating raw materials, generally including clay in the form of kaolin, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 C (2,192 F) and 1,400 C (2,552 F).
>>

Porcelain can be used as a building material, usually in the form of tiles or large rectangular panels. Modern porcelain tiles are generally produced to a number of recognized international standards and definitions.

Types Uses Description
Many different species of wood are fabricated into wood flooring in two primary forms: plank and parquet.

Laminate is a floor covering that appears similar to hardwood but is made with a plywood or medium density fiberboard ("MDF") core with a plastic laminate top layer.
>>

Laminated Plywood: .MDF. .HDF.

HDF laminate consists of high density fiberboard topped by one or more layers of decorative paper and a transparent protective layer.
>>

Laminate may be more durable than hardwood, but cannot be refinished like hardwood. Laminate flooring is available in many different patterns which can resemble different woods or even ceramic tile. It usually locks or taps together.

_ Floor Finish >> Seamless chemical flooring

Seamless chemical flooring Many different seamless flooring materials are available. These are usually latex, polyester, epoxy compounds which are applied in liquid form to provide a completely seamless floor covering. These are usually found in wet areas such as laboratories or food processing plants. These may have granular or rubberized particles added to give better traction.
