Network Guru Terms & Network Diagrams

Terms
1. Broadband- Internet access over a connection much faster than an
ordinary modem, such as ADSL or cable
2. Cat-45 Cable- network cable
3. Client-a application that negates a (remote) service on another
network by some form of blamter
4. DSL- is a family of technologies that provide digital data
transmission over the wires of a local telephone network
5. Ethernet- a large, diverse family of frame-based computer
networking technologies that operate at many speeds for local area
networks
6. Ethernet Card- a piece of computer hardware designed to allow
computers to communicate over a computer network
7. Hub- a device for connecting multiple twisted pair or fiber optic
Ethernet devices together, making them act as a single segment
8. Intranet- a private computer network that uses Internet protocols,
network connectivity to securely share part of an organization's
information or operations with its employees
9. ISP- a business or organization that provides to consumers access to
the Internet and related services.
10. LAN- a computer network covering a small geographic area, like a
home, office, or group of buildings.
11. Modem- a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode
digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to
decode the transmitted information
12. Peripheral Device- any device attached to a computer in order to
expand its functionality. Some of the more common peripheral
devices are printers, scanners, disk drives, tape drives,
microphones, speakers, and cameras
13. Router- a device that determines the proper path for data to travel
between different networks, and forwards data packets to the next
device along this path.[1] They connect networks together; a LAN to
a WAN for example, to access the Internet
14. Server- an application program that accepts connections in order to
service requests by sending back responses and can run on the
same computer as the client application using it, or they can
connect through a computer network.
15. USB- a serial bus standard to interface devices. A major component
in the legacy-free PC, USB was designed to allow peripherals to be
connected using a single standardised interface socket, to improve
plug-and-play capabilities by allowing devices to be connected and
disconnected without rebooting the computer
16. WAN- a computer network that covers a broad area of any network
whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or
national boundaries and are used to connect LANs and other types

of networks together, so that users and computers in one location
can communicate with users and computers in other locations.
17. WiFi- a wireless technology intended to improve the interoperability
of wireless local area network products
18. Wireless Connector- a conductive device for joining wireless
connections together

For the diagrams below, get a blank piece of paper from your teacher
so that you can draw your diagrams. Make sure that you put your
name on this sheet and turn it in to your teacher after submitting this
file. (If you would like to draw them on the computer and know how
you may do this.)
The 3 links at the bottom of the instructions will help you
greatly with this part of the assignment!
Diagram 1
Draw a diagram of a LAN and give two examples where of where
a LAN might be used. The diagram must include at least 5 computers
(at least one must be a wireless laptop), at least one peripheral device,
and how each is connected to the other or how they may be connected
to a central source.

NOTE: some of the items you will need to include – Cat-45, Client,
Ethernet Card, Hub, Modem, Router, WiFi or Wireless Connector.

Diagram 2
Draw a diagram of a WAN and give two examples where of where
a WAN might be used. The diagram must include at least 3 different
LANs, two peripheral device, a connection to the Internet, and how
each is connected to the other or how they may be connected to a
central source.

NOTE: some of the items you will need to include – Broadband, Cat-45,
Client, Ethernet Card, Hub, ISP, Modem, Router, Server, WiFi or
Wireless Connector.
