Investment-Firm Bonuses to Rise 10% to 20% After Year of Soaring Revenues, Profits

Stock-market records, a bumper crop of corporate buyouts and the highest Wall Street profits in six
years mean investment bankers and traders can expect 10% to 20% higher year-end bonuses --
roughly the same increase as last year.

Within the bond divisions at big firms, the greatest increases will come in commodities and structured
finance, with the smallest gains in mortgage securities, investment-grade bonds and convertible
bonds. Within stock divisions, winners will be in equity derivatives and prime brokerage.
However, one area that has slowed since the Amaranth debacle has been energy trading. "We saw a
real drop in demand for energy-trading personnel after Amaranth," says Mr. Karp.
In the U.S. securities business, this year's pretax profits are expected to rise 45% to $25.6 billion, the
highest level since the peak bubble year of 2000, when they reached $31.6 billion, according to data
from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. In that year, not surprisingly, big
bonuses were more concentrated in the technology area, Mr. Karp says.
One reason Wall Street employees can't expect bonuses to rise as much as revenues is that the
number of employees has increased. In the first nine months of 2006, the number of employees at
Goldman, Merrill, Morgan Stanley, Lehman and Bear rose 5% to 173,200, as the firms have sought
to expand.
For example, Morgan Stanley last week announced three separate investments in hedge funds. And
Merrill Lynch recently bought a specialty investment-banking firm, Petrie Parkman & Co., to ramp up
its energy-banking effort.
After overexpanding during the bubble, and then slashing in the years 2001-2003, Wall Street
has "been slow to hire back, they've been more careful" during the current upturn, Mr.
Johnson said. But now "they're hiring again," he said. "They realize that the bench is not as
deep as it needs to be."

JMC Job Search Tips (Simple Things pt 43…)
A POPULAR JOB SEARCH MYTH…
Do you know the one about “taking the holidays off because there’s no hiring taking
place”? Well, that’s exactly what it is – a myth. Don’t suspend your search activities during
the holiday season as for the last three years; there has actually been a continuation of
hiring activities that has continued into December. Research has shown that more and
more companies have sought to use the holiday months of November and December to
assemble their teams for the new year so that they can “hit the ground running”. It is in
that spirit that we once again bring you the following holiday tips courtesy of Jay Colan &
Joe Quinn:

HOLIDAY JOB SEARCH


1. The holidays are a great time to network. It is a time to participate in the many activities of the
season, including family, social, and community events as well as functions of religious
organizations, professional and trade associations. Your networking can lighten up from some of the
self-conscience outreach that sometimes can characterize networking to a more natural reconnecting
with people who you have known over the years.
The December meetings of most professional associations are generally more social than meetings
in other months where the focus is a panel or speaker. The December meetings have a "glad to see
you" camaraderie. The events of the past few years have made us even more sensitive to the
appreciation of our ties, affiliations and communities. The holidays are a time to participate in the
general warmth with which people have been greeting people you have not seen for a while.

TIP: Many charities have fund raisers and events during the holidays. The boards of many charities
are populated by corporate leaders. These events can be pricey, so choose them wisely. You can
readily get the names of those on the board of directors of charities by obtaining the annual report
from the organization or by going to nccs.urban.org, then click on "databases".

2. The budget planning that goes on in the fall can overlap with your holiday networking. The
networking that happens in December could result in a line being created for you for when the
company is ready to hire you, which could be in the next fiscal year. There are also situations where
a project needs to be completed before the end of the fiscal year by someone on a project basis,
even if there is a head count freeze. A manager might want to fill a line before the end of the fiscal
year to rationalize the need to continue that line that following year. We have seen clients hired in
the last few weeks specifically to start in December to complete a project or to fill a line before
yearend.

3. Holiday cards (with return addresses) are always appropriate ways of staying in touch with people
you have not had contact with for a while. This is the time for Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza,
Ramadan, Diwali, and New Year's - so many traditions are commemorated in November and
December- all the more reason to send a non-denominational card with a winter scene.
No need to write about being out of work - just "Happy Holidays, Best Wishes for the New Year".
People use the holidays to contact people they have not been in touch with for a long time. Just a
simple card can rekindle a relationship. In addition to family and friends, former colleagues,
classmates, vendors and clients (where appropriate) as well as recruiters are people to write to at
this time of the year.
Send the cards early in December to avoid your cards getting lost in the rush of cards later in the
month and to possibly result in the person contacting you to get together during the holidays or to
invite you to holiday festivities. Cards easily reflect the sentiment, "We've been out of touch, let's get
together in the new year!"

TIP: Since this form of outreach is so highly personalized, make sure the cards are hand-signed and
the envelopes are hand-stamped. Any corporate mailing of this is highly inappropriate and if
anything would work against the effort to reach out to people in a personal way.

4. Volunteering has always been a good way to structure time for people in job search, to meet other
professionals and to do purposeful activity that could be especially meaningful. Such activity is even
more poignant during the holidays. Two hours of volunteering each week could be a good outlet and
would be appreciated by charities at this time.
