Job Market Intel
NYC economy grew 2.4% in third quarter

New York City's economy grew more rapidly than the nation's during the second half of last year, but
the pace is slowing down, according to a quarterly report by city Comptroller William Thompson.
Real gross city product -- a measure of the overall city economy -- grew 2.4% in the third quarter of
2006, down from 2.9% in the previous quarter but above the 2% national rate.
Although growth in the fourth quarter is also expected to have exceeded the nation, the comptroller
noted a softening. "The city's growth rate has been decelerating since the first quarter of 2006, but a
recession does not appear imminent," Mr. Thompson said in a statement.
He added that a "tentative housing market should be reassured by steady job and income growth,"
and that a "banner year on Wall Street" will provide a lift.
Elsewhere in the report, the city's payroll jobs grew at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1.9%
-- or by 16,800 jobs in the third quarter -- after adding 14,300 jobs in the second quarter. Preliminary
data suggest that growth stalled in the fourth quarter.
Reflecting the weakening payroll numbers, personal income tax withholdings grew by just 1.1% in the
second half of 2006, compared with the year-ago period.
The report reveals that a growing portion of the city's workforce is self-employed. In 2004, the city
had 720,000 self-employed workers, an increase of 211,000 since 1997.
"The remarkable growth of self-employment underscores the entrepreneurial energy of this city but it
also raises additional concerns about health insurance, retirement benefits and the economic
security of our workforce," Mr. Thompson said.
Executives Express Confidence About Business Prospects

Global business confidence is at a five-year high, according to a survey by the Economist
Intelligence Unit, which found nine out of 10 top executives rating business prospects over the next
three years as good or very good.
The dynamism in emerging markets - especially China and India - was the main reason for this
optimism, with a majority of the 1,006 executives from around the world planning to invest more in
developing countries than in developed economies. However, the greatest concern among the
executives was the shortage of talent in emerging markets, despite the large numbers of students
graduating each year in China and India. They say that a relatively low proportion have the skills
required by global firms, and that competition for those that do is intense.
The survey, which polls more than 1,000 executives every year, is sponsored by UK Trade and
Investment, a government body that promotes British exports and inward investment. More than half
held top positions in their companies, with Asia and North America each providing a quarter and 40
per cent from Europe.
Nearly a third of the executives rated business prospects "very good", compared with just six per
cent five years ago. Given the strong global economic outlook, growth in sales was regarded as a
greater priority for 2007 than controlling costs.
Rising demand in developing economies was cited by 34 per cent as the strongest influence in the
global economy, followed by 32 per cent who said global sourcing. Most executives saw emerging
markets as a route to cutting costs and viewed developed economies as a source of innovation.

JMC Job Search Tips (Simple Things pt 47…)

What’s Your Q Score…
In the marketing world, a Q score refers to a measurement of familiarity for a celebrity, a
brand, a character, a TV show, etc. and usually the higher the score the higher the fees
commanded. Since we exist in an employment marketplace that is increasingly paying
more attention to coming talent shortages and that gives us the freedom to explore our
individual market value, we need to adapt this critical piece of strategy for our own job
search campaigns. In other words, the better known we are in our respective fields, the
more the demand and the higher compensation will be. So how do we go about increasing
our Q scores? There are a number of ways but the most effective is by what I’ll call
“networking for Q action” meaning that informational conversations should lead to
opportunities to get your name carried forth. These can include volunteering for
professional panels, writing articles, assisting in coordinating events, contributing to blogs,
etc. all under the alternate guise of getting your name out there…
