STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I, Vivek Arora, am a final year student of the four year course of Bachelor of
Engineering (BE) at the Institute of Technology and Management (ITM),
Gurgaon - Haryana (India). I will be graduating in June, 2008 with a degree
in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). I am applying for admission to
MS program in Computer Science at your esteemed University.

Right from my school days, I have been very fond of solving problems and
puzzles involving mathematics and logic. The mathematical rigor and
systematic approach necessary to attack them have always looked
challenging to me. I chose CS for my undergraduate study of all other options
as it seemed to present a lot of intellectual challenges and immensely
satisfying experiences because of its wide range of applications to those
aspiring to harness its ever-growing prospects.

Besides, first hand background in CSE, the intensive training which I have
been imparted with during BE course at ITM has sharpened my capabilities. In
addition to the overall development of my personality, a spirit of team work
and competitiveness has been the result of having intelligent and assiduous
people around as classmates during the performance of a number of group
course projects. In fact, the evaluation process at our Institute encompasses
the overall development of the students including end-term examinations,
assignments, paper reading and seminars. This has added to my involvement
and enthusiasm in my undergraduate studies. I have always adopted a
rigorous approach in order to attain an in-depth understanding of the subject.
My grades in the undergraduate studies have been good. My approach to
learning courses has been oriented towards thorough study of underlying
concepts, giving me a broad conceptual basis. On one hand, I learnt the
Theory of Computation, Discrete Structures & Design & Analysis of Algorithms
etc., all having a flavor of abstract mathematics; on the other hand, the
principles learnt had applications in compilers, numerical computation,
operating systems, graphics, databases and artificial intelligence. I have also
been acquainted with programming languages like java, C, C++, DotNet. I
also learnt hardware courses such as Digital Electronics, Advanced Computer
Architecture, Digital System Design. The whole undergraduate curriculum in
CS has given me a sufficient exposure to various possibilities, thereby
whetting my appetite for a graduate program in this field. Such a program
from an eminent university would further sharpen my skills and help in
contributing to the society at large.

My areas of interest include Operating Systems, Multi-media, Computer

Networks and Programming Languages. I understand that the graduate
program in CS provides intensive training in the design, programming,
theory, and applications of computers. My professional goal is to serve the
society and work in any business, industrial or governmental organization,
and the advanced knowledge of computer theory and technology will help me
in achieving this goal. Incidentally, I may mention that though, I have been
selected by M/s. Infosys - one of the leading IT Company in India to work with
them, but I intend to pursue MS program first.

Besides academics, I have been an active participant in extra-curricular

activities e.g. annual cultural events organized by the Institute and even won
prizes. In sports, I have been the Captain of the Institute cricket team and
played in tournaments at Inter-college and Intra-college levels. I have also
been a member of the Department’s Volleyball team. This helped me to work
well in groups and cultivate good leadership qualities.

I have gone through the brochures of your University very carefully and have
realized that fantabulous facilities and highly trained and eminent faculty
members provide an excellent ground for further higher education. I have
decided to apply to Department of Computer Science at your University
because it compares to the best and I would get an opportunity to fulfill my
aspirations and will further hone my technical and analytical skills. I am sure
that highly competitive atmosphere here will bring out the best in me.

I am fully aware of the kind of dedication, commitment and perseverance

that it calls for and believe that the motivation, capability and the
background possessed by me will see me through any challenge. I am also
confident that I will meet the standards of your University and hope that you
will take a favorable decision regarding my admission.
