1. TRICK OR TREAT HOURS ON POST- Safety of children on Halloween should always be a concern. This year Trick or Treating is allowed on JBLM from 6-8 pm on October 31. Trick or Treating is only allowed in the housing areas. The barracks are off limits to trick or treating.

2. Force protection- Force protection conditions for Joint Base Lewis-McChord are now posted on the JBLM public website at http://www.lewis-mcchord.army.mil/. This will allow commanders to keep their Soldiers, Airmen, DOD civilians and Family members aware of the current FPCON to raise security awareness. The FPCON can be raised in the event of a specific threat to the installation or upon direction of higher headquarters. Categories are grouped by age and division. Each participant can submit up to three entries per category. Pick up your entry forms and rules at the McChord Arts & Crafts Center, Building 1121, Barnes Boulevard at McChord Field. Entries must be submitted no later than Dec. 27. 5. USTA Offers Free One-Year Junior Memberships To Military Kids- The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced it is offering free one-year USTA Junior Memberships to all children ages ten years and younger that are new to the USTA. Children of active duty military, National Guard, Reservists and Veterans are invited to take advantage of this membership promotion, which launched earlier this year. The offer is open to all first-time junior members now until 31 December 2011. Junior

memberships regularly cost $19. To join the USTA and receive the free membership, new junior members in military families can sign up by one of the following ways: using source code- RIBBONU10; calling USTA Membership Services at 1-800-990-8782; or visiting USTA Membership Services online at http://www.usta.com/membership 6. National Caregiver Support Line -is open Monday Friday, 8a.m. to 11p.m. and Saturday, 10:30a.m. to 6p.m. (EST). Recently launched, the support line will serve as a primary resource and referral center, to provide information on VA and community caregiver support resources and offer emotional support for the caregiver. 7. MOVE YOUR UNAUTHORIZED VEHICLES- Effective NOV 10, the Provost Marshalls Office will begin towing non-compliant vehicles/trailers from unauthorized parking at JBLM. This includes all recreational vehicles, boats, trailers, and non-functional vehicles parked on base (except those stored in MWR long-term storage lots or authorized service/repair facilities). The JBLM military police office can keep an eye on your home while you are away. You can simply walk into the MP Station and fill out a quick form. When you return home, just give them a quick call to let them know. This is separate from the form that Equity Residential asks you to give them when you go away. 9. GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT- Walk away from tobacco for a day on 17 November for the Great American Smokeout. www.ucanquit2.org 10. NATIONAL MEDICATION TAKE BACK DAY- Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is participating in the Drug Enforcement Agencys (DEA) 2nd National Medicine Take Back Day for unwanted or expired medication. This event will be held on October 29, 2011, at the JBLM-Lewis PX far corner parking lot near the main intersection from 10:00am 2:00 pm. This is an opportunity for those residing on JBLM to safely, conveniently and anonymously turn-in their unwanted or expired over-the-counter and prescription medications. Employees residing outside of JBLM can to take their medications to a community collection site. To locate a site near you, go to www.dea.gov and enter your zip code or city and state. To protect privacy, participants are reminded to remove their personal information labels. All solid dosage medication and liquids in consumer containers will be accepted. Intravenous solutions, injectibles, syringes or any other medical waste WILL NOT be accepted due to the potential biohazard risks. 11. HOLIDAY MAILING DATES- Deadlines to ensure arrival by Dec. 25 are Nov. 12 for parcel post mail; Nov. 26 for space-available mail; Dec. 3 for parcel airlift mail; Dec. 10 for priority mail and first-class mail, letters and cards; and Dec. 17 for express mail military service. Express Mail Military Service is not available for holiday packages and mail going to Iraq and Afghanistan, said Ms. Faye Slater, the Deputy Director of the Military Postal Service Agency. 12. Put down that cell- Law Enforcement personnel will begin issuing district court violation notices (i.e., federal magistrate court ticket) for using cell phones while driving on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. This will require the violator to pay a $75 fine or go to court to argue before the magistrate judge. Those who opt to continue using cell phones while driving must use a hands-free device to avoid a ticket. Repeat offenders risk losing installation driving privileges at the discretion of the garrison commander. 15. Legal assistance hours- The hours of operation on Tuesdays and Thursdays have changed for the JBLM Lewis Main Legal Assistance Office. Hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays will remain the same. The new hours are as follows: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for attorney services and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for notary and power-of-attorney services. 1. Escape Zone hour- The Escape Zone at McChord Field is extending its hours to Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. The Escape Zone offers a place to parents and their children 5 and younger to learn and play together. The Escape Zone is in Building 841 on Fairway Road. For information, call 982-8590/2695. 2. TELL ME A STORY EVENT- Join the MCEC on Sunday November 6, 2011 at 3 pm at the Four Chaplains Memorial Chapel on JBLM. The Featured Book at this event will be Listen to the Wind by Greg Mortenson and Susan L. Roth. The Military Child Education Coalitions Tell Me a Story event is geared towards children 4-12. Each family will receive a copy of the featured book. Hands on activities, snacks, and a fun learning experience will be provided. BOSS INFORMATION
WHAT IS BOSS? Almost all of you know that BOSS (Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers) is a program that is set up for Single Soldiers to have activities that you can enjoy and volunteer for to get out into your community. The thing you may not know is that BOSS is YOUR program. SOLDIERS AND SOLDIERS IDEAS ARE THE PROGRAM! You can improve the program by just bringing your thoughts to the table. BOSS is not another program that is trying to come up with ideas on its own. They want to know what you think would be fun and exciting. BOSS wants to help set up those ideas and make it possible.

You can now follow the events that BOSS is holding by texting. Put in FOLLOW JBLMBOSS to 40404. You will receive messages about what events are going on. You could also have the chance to receive free tickets or other cool stuff. DESIGNATED DRIVER (DD) PROGRAM: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! This is an easy way to get hours for volunteering. It starts from 2100 0300 every Friday and Saturday. If this program isnt used, then it will disappear. If you want to volunteer, then sign up at your BOSS board or at the Nelson Recreation Center. 1. EFMP movies monthly- The McChord Theater is showing sensory-friendly matinee movies to EFMP Families on the third Saturday of each month at noon. "123 Magic Class: Managing Difficult Behaviors in Children 2-12". This class offers military parents, along with civilian employees, the opportunity to learn simple solutions and techniques to address obnoxious behaviors (i.e. whining, arguing, tantrums) utilizing timeouts, but with a different attitude and technique than you may have tried in the past. It really does work, according to the many participants who have taken this research-based class. Free on-site child care is available if your child is pre-registered with CYS. It trains you to become an effective caregiver for a person at risk of suicide. It helps you perform suicide first aid for this person. It helps you to assist the person at risk of suicide to stay safe and to seek further help. ASIST is a very interactive workshop that equips you to: recognize invitations for help, reach out and offer support, review the risks of suicide, apply a suicide intervention model, and link the person at risk to community resources. ASIST is a very effective program. Evaluations have shown that it increases a caregivers knowledge,

CLOSURES AND CONSTRUCTION

1. JBLM POOL CLOSURE- The Kimbro Pool located in the McVeigh gym near the Carey Theater will close Oct. 31. It is scheduled to re-open in Sept. 2012. Renovations will include new lap lanes, better filtration & climate control, and a zero-depth kiddie pool w/ indoor splash park. Until then, youth lessons, evening swim, scuba classes & NG/Reserve training move to newly-renovated Keeler Pool (Old Madigan Area) & weekend swim, pool parties/rentals move to the pool @Soldiers Field House.

2. Liggett Avenue- Public Works announced plans to shut down Liggett Avenue between Division and 12th Streets for 45 days of construction. The project start date depends on the contract, but PW expects work to begin by press time. The closure will include the intersection of Liggett and Division, but 12th Street and the intersection at Liggett and 12th will remain open. Parking areas along that length of Liggett Avenue will be blocked. Most of the parking areas have access from other directions, but parking will be blocked completely in front of and west of McVeigh Sports and Fitness Center and across the street from I Corps Headquarters, Building 2025. Parking for McVeigh will be in the rear and on the north side of Liggett, which can be accessed from Pendleton. While Liggett is under construction, the contractor is required to provide access from the parking area north of Liggett to McVeigh at, or near the location of the current McVeigh crosswalk. 3. Pendleton Avenue- Construction to upgrade the road substructure under Pendleton Avenue near the Town Center on JBLM Lewis Main will be completed in a few months. Pendleton between 8th and 12th streets will be closed daily for construction from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. Access to offices and other buildings will be maintained. Traffic will be detoured

to Liggett Avenue during construction hours. Officials are working to mitigate noise impact to Town Center residents. This is the first of several major construction projects on two miles of Pendleton Avenue during the next 18 months, as crews widen the road and upgrade communication, power and water lines underneath. The widened avenue will result in better traffic flow, parking and facility access, creating a friendlier environment for bikes and pedestrians. North Gate Road- Road repairs on the JBLM North Gate Road (Huggins Meyer Road SW), a 1.7 mile stretch between JBLM Lewis Norths D Street Gate and Lakewood, will continue through today. Commuters who normally use North Gate Road will be detoured through Lakewood and Steilacoom. The D Street Gate on JBLM Lewis North will remain open throughout the road repair projects. Emergency vehicles will have access through the construction site for emergencies. Clover Park School buses will also have access to transit through the construction site. Upon completion of the North Gate Road repairs, East Drive will close for repairs. East Drive repairs include adding a right turn lane and a traffic signal. Repairs to East Drive are expected to take approximately 90 days. These road repair projects were designed to improve roadway surfaces, increase traffic mobility, and create a safer driving environment for the community.
