Occupy Oakland Organizes General Strike/Mass Mobilization

Hundreds gathered at "Occupy Oakland" Thursday to plan a massive mobilization and General Strike to occur on Wednesday, November 2nd, titled Liberate Oakland, Shut Down the 1%. A broad range of organizations such as labor, faith-based, non-profit, social justice, education, youth and others were represented among those determined to carry out the proposal (see occupyoakland.org). The General Assembly convened after protesters reentered Oscar Grant (aka Frank Ogawa Plaza) on Wednesday night. It was passed by the General Assembly, numbered at above two thousand people, with a vote of 96.9%. The Mass Day of Action is targeting the 1%, and all banks and corporations are urged to close down for the day. All workers, students, and other members of the community are urged to forego normal activity and join the peaceful protests centering out of the Plaza. It is recognized that many working people and students may not be able to join a General Strike on short notice, but ...we invite all students to walk out of school, states the call for action, and Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland. Those unable to leave their place of work without endangering their jobs are encouraged to join the protests before and after work (or school), and at lunch. Last nights General Assembly featured a candle-light vigil for Iraq Veteran Scott Olsen, a peaceful protester who was critically injured by the police Tuesday night. It is expected that hundreds will gather again at 5:00 PM today before the 7:00 PM General Assembly to continue planning to organize their neighborhoods, schools, community organizations, unions, churches/synagogues/mosques, affinity groups, unionized workplaces and families to encourage them to participate in whatever way possible. It was very moving to see people from all walks of life and all sectors of our community working together to build this local, national and world-wide movement for fundamental changes in how our society operates, and who controls the vast majority of our wealth and resources, stated . The Mass Day of Mobilization this coming Wednesday will inspire everyone to fight for a shift of this countrys resources and wealth from the controlling 1% to the struggling 99%.

Strikers and community members will converge on downtown Oakland throughout the day formass gatherings at 14th & Broadway: 9:00am 12 noon 5:00pm (see occupyoakland.org/strike). Occupy Oakland calls out to the Bay Area community to support this movement and this Mass Mobilization. Bring your voice, your story, your ideas, and your frustrations. All are welcome, and all will be respected and supported. #30#30#30#
