NPMaAVT98.9 Moa and Martin are going to build stairs to the bed (see picture). a) They decide that the height of each step should be 20 cm. How many steps do they need to saw? (1p) b) The stairs must reach at least 0.6 m out on the floor. Decide how far you want their stairs to reach, and calculate the length of the planks they need for the side pieces. (2p) c) To saw off the side pieces, they need to know the angle between the stairs and the floor. Calculate this angle. (2p)

NPMaAVT98.10 a) The diameter of a golf ball must be 41.2 mm. Golf balls can be bought in boxes that hold exactly 4 golf balls. See figure to the right. How much per cent of the volume of the box does the volume of the balls take up? (2p) b) Tennis balls can be bought in cylindrical tubes that hold exactly 4 balls. See the figure below. Show that the relationship between the volume of the tube and 3 (3p) the volume of the balls is . 2

PAIR OF CIRCLES

Below two circles of different sizes are drawn. Examine and calculate the relationships between a) the lengths of the circles (radius, diameter and circumference). the areas of the circles. the volumes when you fold the circles into cones as shown in the figures below.

b) c)

You are allowed to cut out the circles and measure them. Present your investigation and your conclusions.

Fold the circle in the middle to form a semicircle. Fold the circle once again in the middle to form a quarter of a circle. Pull the layers of paper apart, so that you have one layer on one side and three layers on the other side. A cone has now been formed.

Show that your results are true for all pairs of circles if the radius of the first circle is twice as long as the radius of the second circle. (Hint: call the radius of the small circle r.) Examine, as in a, b and c other pairs of circles, where the radius of the first circle is three times as long as the radius of the second circle, where the radius of the first circle is four times as long as the radius of the second circle and so on. What conclusions can you draw from your investigation?
