Eleven Senses Who Knew? Workshop

Marilyn Kelly

Senses: The physiological tools that the body uses to perceive the world. Aristotle defined the five traditional senses: Sight, Hearing, Touch, Smell, and Taste. Six additional scientifically recognized senses: Pain, Balance, Sense of Time, Joint Motion and Acceleration, Temperature Differences, and Direction. Sight Vision: The ability of the brain and eye to detect light. Conveys large amounts of information in a way that is easy to process. People benefit when sight is combined with other senses in learning. o People read each other using body language. Hearing Audition: The perception of vibrations traveling through a medium as sound by the ear or body. Used to tell stories, give warnings, and set moods. Most animals attempt to use sound to communicate. Sound can be used to bring out basic instincts. o Unexpected noises can trigger the fight-or-flight reflex. Touch Tactition: Perception resulting from neural and pressure receptors in the skin, hair, tongue, and throat. Soft things are comforting. Ridged/firm things give a sense of stability and safety. Touching something sharp or hard acts as a warning. Very personal sense

Smell Olfaction: A chemical sense consisting of hundreds of receptors in the nose. Scents are a strong identifying trait and can trigger memories. Flavor is a combination of smell and taste. Womens sense of smell strengthens during ovulation. Taste Gustation: A chemical sense consisting of receptors within the entire oral cavity Five identified taste receptor types - Bitter, Salty, Sour, Sweet, and Savory. Appetitive tastes (salty, sweet, and savory) indicate essential nutrients. Aversive tastes (bitter and sour) warn of harmful substances.

Pain Nociception: The detection of damage or near-damage to tissue through pain receptors. His grip wavered and he slid down the gravely rock. His arms scraped and stung, fingers wildly grasping to regain hold. He fell for what seemed like forever and landed with a resounding crack. Agony shot through his leg like a bullet and burned like hot brass. Three types of pain receptors - Skin, Joints and Bones, and Organs. All pain receptors send signals to the brain through the spine. Balance Equilibrioception: A combination of several systems in the body that prevents falling while walking or standing. They swung around in each others arms, laughing until they both fell over. Their heads spun and turned, and the sky wavered uncooperatively. Other senses contribute to balance - Sight, Joint Motion and Acceleration, and Direction. Much of balance is determined by a system of tubing within the inner ear. Joint Motion and Acceleration Proprioception: The sense of the relative positions of parts of the body. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with the precision of a master marksman, her eyes focused on the warm glow of her screen. Based solely on internal measures - Muscles, Tendons, and Articular Sources. This sense is impaired by alcohol and is tested in field sobriety tests. Expansion on this sense is necessary for learning new skills, sports, and arts. Sense of Time: A system distributed throughout various portions of the brain to perceive durations. Waiting in the hospital lobby lingered on for an eternity. The hours dragged on like glaciers, stretching into what seemed like forever. Perception of time is variable and subjective. Time seems to pass more slowly or quickly depending on situational factors. o Certain drugs and brain chemicals can also alter perception of time.

Temperature Difference Thermoception: The detection of heat and cold by receptors in the skin.

She was paralyzed by the oppressive heat, melting away in her harsh, unbreathing clothes. Different parts of the brain are used to register internal and external temperature. Cold temperatures encourage movement. Warm temperatures encourage rest. Direction Magnetoception: The ability to detect a magnetic field to perceive direction and altitude. When the plane took off his head spun. He closed his eyes but he could still feel his body ascending higher and higher into the heavens. Weak sense in humans, most commonly used for navigation in other animals. * Interoceptive Senses: Internal senses which are not used to interact with the world Debatable whether they should be considered as true senses. Respiration rate, Vasodilation (blushing, chilling, flushing, and headaches), Swallowing, Intestinal distress, Fullness, Cramping. Intuition Sixth Sense Instinctive Knowledge Extrasensory Perception (ESP): Sensing with the mind, not the body. Other senses useful for writing. Sense of duty, humor, purpose, style, etc. See word lists for more.
