VAN NUYS - Police nearly outnumbered a small group of protesters who marched down Van Nuys Boulevard on Saturday, railing against banks and corporate greed as part of the new Occupy San Fernando Valley movement. About 30 protesters made stops at branches of Chase Bank, CitiBank, Wells Fargo and Bank of America along the main throughway. Police positioned themselves between the bank entrances and the demonstrators as the group shouted, "Stop the banksters," and "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out." "It's the banks that have their hands in politics and government," said Chris Palomino, a 24-year-old student from North Hollywood. "I just want to get as much information out to the population, try to get everyone educated out of the illusion that the corporations, that the banks are trying to put them in. We need to awaken the people." But the march, which was escorted by bike police and at least one patrol car, also attracted critics who said the movement's disorganization and lack of clear goals made it pointless. "They're not going to be taken seriously by their actions," said Dee Reynolds, 34, of Northridge, who stopped by to argue with the protesters. "Go occupy a job. Go clean up a neighborhood. "People need to worry more about their day to day lives, and their own personal business," Reynolds said. "They don't really have any demands they can ask for." The turnout was much smaller than both police and organizers had anticipated. Nearly 500 people had `liked' the group's Facebook page, which members hoped to mean that more people would eventually show up to join their cause. "It's unfair that the establishment has taken away from the people of this country for so long now," said protester Antony Cernuto, 46, a musician from Canoga Park. "It has to be fair for everyone, or it can't be fair for anyone." Police, meanwhile, laid out a strict set of rules in stark contrast to the encampment that has sprung up around City Hall downtown. Although protesters remained peaceful, police said they plan to enforce the 7 p.m. curfew rule in the plaza, which is surrounded by city, state and federal buildings including the Van Nuys Superior Court. "This isn't a park," said Sgt. Mitzi Fierro of LAPD Media Relations. "This is a government facility. "We're supportive of people exercising their First Amendment rights as long as they follow the rules," Fierro said. Protesters said they would sleep on or roam the sidewalks until 6 a.m., when the plaza reopens, and move back in.

Do these people not realize that they were also bailed out. If the banks failed, the economy would have collapsed and what we now see as a recession would be a grave depression. There will always be corporate greed in an economy based on capitalism. Should corporations turn their profits over to the people? Sure, to their stockholders, those that invested and took part. Those that didn't, don't see the big picture. Reply 1 Like Follow Post 2 hours ago Rob Miller Works at Freelance Producer Yes, but that does NOT mean that we should ignore the CORRUPTION that necessitated the bailout! Seriously, think about it. You're FOR corruption? You think letting big money do whatever it wants is a GOOD idea? The financial meltdown BENEFITTED you and society? We're better off for it? Come on. Shed the talking points you hold on to so tightly and have a man's conversation about it. Reply 1 Like 2 hours ago Top Commenter Woodland Hills, California

Rob Miller No one said that we should ignore corruption. You put a lot of words in my mouth and took most of what I said out of context. The talking points are simply this: If you, I or anyone else does not meet the credit worthy guidelines established as part of the Bail Out Guidelines, then we will not benefit and may lose our homes. The Bail Out intention was not that the banks should just hand out

homes. The Bail Out intention was not that the banks should just hand out money to all that asked, but to salvage what could be salvaged of our economy. Reply 1 Like 2 hours ago

Paul Shively I get it now... NOW they have "Credit Worthy Guidelines" as before the guideline to get a house was basically if you were breathing and could sign on the line. Of course a lot of these people shouldn't have qualified but was that their fault or the corps (banks) loaning the money. Be that as it may, we are now in the situation that we are in. As far as the banks handing out money... ha, like I said earlier they won't even load money to those that are more than qualified. If you were loaned a lot of money on the pretext it would go certain places and you decided to keep it yourself... what would happen... would they just shine that one? Of course not, so what are the banks different? Reply Like about an hour ago Tom Enright Rob Miller // you exist for now.. but NOTHING will change...you are screaming down an empty hallway . Obama will have no choice but to put a stop to this bs and look like the halfwitted leftist turd he is....so in that regard , thanks for your help in destroying the commiecrats and electing a Republican President, Senate and House...you will see jobs flooding back and the economy turn around in weeks . I grew up in Alabama -- i'm quite immune to that kind of rhetoric. And if you for one second believe that getting rid of anyone in the bought & sold White House and replacing him with another bought & sold politician is going to make ANY difference, then you haven't been observing both democratic AND republican presidential politics for the last 50 years. why is it "looking for a free ride" to protest the theft of billions from the economy by a now obscenely wealthy few? why is it lazy to protest the rewriting of law by lobbyists paid for by the very wealthy, to favor the wealthy in tax law and in de-regulation? protesting is the american way to be heard when you are not rich enough to be heard through a lobbyist. It is very difficult to figure out a next step, but the first step is for our voices to be heard. One regulation after another has been altered to suit the the wealthy over the last 30 years, in response to corporate lobbyists who write our laws and no-one has spoken up - and the result was the wall street crash - from which a favored few benefitted greatly. Now the taxpayers have bailed out the very institutions that gambled and took down their economy, making a few more people VERY rich (and both Democratic and Republican lawmakers supported that choice) So clearly voting one way or another did not help. So now, without the benefit of lobbyists, this is what a citizen must do in order to be heard. Reply Like about an hour ago Alina Szpak spc7ray no Tom its you who is insane, pardon me... just stupid. Tom Enright you seem to need to call anyone you don't agree with a moronwhich demonstrates that you don't really have a handle on what reasoned debate or free speech really are- or that living in a democratic republic includes many different voices. OWS is having a problem with the clarity of its message because so many different kinds of people have been hurt in the last 10 years their retirements have been stolen - yes, stolen, and handed to corporate CEO's as "bonuses". (read "Retirement Heist") Decent jobs have been shipped overseas for the last 30 years. I am bewildered by your belief that protesting these things is a desire to institute a communist agenda of some sort, but that again is kind of a typical boogeyman people are trying to insert into this conversation, where it actually has no place. These protesters are no better than the ones in Greece. First, they are paid to do the dirty work to distract from the lack of leadership in Washington. They blame the banks and cooporations. Where were they when they or their parents signed phoney loans for their homes? They lied then but it was OK. Our state needs jobs but that won't happen as long as the unions and Sacramento remove regulations that make it possible. Banks won't loan as they don't know what the future brings. Liberals offer free rides to illegals and businesses won't hire. There's plenty of money for pay raises and benefits. I'm sick and tired of the double standards. These protesters should go to Washington that's where the blame is. Reply 2 Like Follow Post about an hour ago Tom Enright EXACTLY CORRECT LEE !!!! Reply Like about an hour ago

I encourage everyone to watch the movie too Big To Fail and there is one comment in there that answers this question: "Will they do with the money what we want them to do?" The answer was "I hope so".. They did not.. They took the money, invested it in hedge funds etc, and paid out huge bonuses... And congress did nothing.. The $4trillion was for the loses the banks incurred from the housing market.. However no one ever handed over $4trillion to the people to cover their loses... So the people instead of being bailed out were foreclosed on... Where is the justice? Reply 2 Like Follow Post 2 hours ago Top Commenter Minneapolis, Minnesota
