Lesson Plan for Lia

Outcomes: In this lesson, students will begin to understand how to sort objects into equal groups. I can statement: I can divide objects into equal groups.
Learning Objectives: The student will begin to: Understand what an equal group is Count the number of objects in each group Divide the given objects into equal groups

Instructional Objectives:
Wisconsin Extended Grade Band 3-4 Objectives: Mathematics Bb2: Combine and separate number or objects 0-20 into requested equal groups. Instructional Achievement Levels for this Standard: Minimal Add one to a group of objects Basic Add one-step single digit number problems Proficient Add and subtract onestep single-digit number problems Combine or separate numbers or objects 020 into requested equal groups Advanced Solve addition and subtraction one-step single digit number problems using symbols

Assessment: Lia will be assessed throughout the lesson. We will focus on the proficient level of combining and separating numbers or objects 0-20 into requested equal groups, however if we need to I will go back to the minimal and basic standard achievements to ensure that she is understanding the concept. I will also keep an informal assessment chart which is listed below. The chart will outline what the number in each group is and whether or not she was able to place the correct amount of objects in it. Number of Objects Per Group Original Number Put in group by student Number of tries needed to create the correct groups

Materials Needed: 40 Manipulatives Number spinner 1-9

2 White Boards Markers Total Time needed: 24-30 minutes Procedures: Steps for instruction: Warm Up: On the desk will be the manipulatives and the spinner 1-9. I will put a group of manipulatives in front of Lia and a group in front of me. They will each have the same number in the group. We will count each group and then write the number on the write board. Instruction: I will then show Lia how each group has the same amount of objects in it. Together we will recount each group. Then I will ask her to put two objects in each group. This will give me an understanding if she knows how to make equal groups with a small number. I will ask questions, Can I have two? Now give yourself two. We will then count the groups again and write each number on the white boards. We will continue to do this, going through the numbers 3, 6, and 8. Each time I will give her assistance with needed however allowing her to grow each time. Then once we have gone over a few numbers I will then ask Lia to spin the number spinner. The number that the spinner lands on will then be the number of each items in our group. This will serve as the assessment for the lesson. I will keep track of the amount of manipulatives placed in each group and whether or not Lia is able to create equal groups.
