Researchdegrees(MPhil&PhD)
As a research student, you will not normally be expected to attend classes. You must, however, beavailableforregularmeetingswithyourprimarysupervisor, andactively participate in the fortnightly departmental research seminar. You should also make a point of attending at least one of the series of research seminars which run at the institute of Classical Studies (Greek Literature, Latin Literature, Classical Archaeology, Ancient History, Graduate WorkinProgress); further details of these are provided below. The Colleges Graduate School has useful information on its webpages: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/graduate/school/. In particular it produces a series of documents designed to clarify the Colleges expectationsofyou, andwhatyoushouldexpectfromtheCollege.TheHandbookfor Supervisors is particularly helpful for graduate research students: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/graduate/school/current/docs.html Inaddition, youshouldconsulttheCurrentGraduateStudentswebpagesoftheSchool ofArts&Humanitiesat:http://www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/humanities/grad/current/. The paragraphs which follow should be read carefully, in conjunction with these two sets of information and regulation document; they lay down those aspects of your programmeofstudywhicharespecifictothisDepartment.Thereisoneacronymwith whichyouneedtobefamiliar:PARCPostgraduateAndResearchCommittee(Chairin 201011:DrHughBowden). 1.Periodofstudy Inpractice, thenormalminimumfulltimeregistrationforanMPhilistwoyears, fora PhDthreeyears(forparttimestudentsgreaterflexibilityisallowed).Duringthatperiod you must be in regular contact with your supervisor. Unless the PARC gives formal approvalinadvance, thisisassumedtomeanthatstudentsarelivingwithinreasonable distance of Kings. Experience has shown that attempts to supervise research students by correspondence or by email has serious disadvantages for the student. We also consideritimportantthatasaresearchstudent, youareasfullyintegratedaspossible into the academic activities of your peers and of staff, i.e. by taking part in seminars, attendingspeciallecturesandevents, etc. TheDepartmentexpectsthatmoststudentswillbereadytosubmitaPhDattheendof threeyearsfulltimestudy(orparttimeequivalent),andthatallfulltimestudentswill do so within four years. If, after the end of three years, your thesis is substantially 11

completebutnotyetreadytobesubmitted, youmay, atthediscretionofPARC,transfer your registration to writing up status. Please note, however, that such transfer is not automatic. 2.Roleofsupervisors&PostgraduateResearchCommittee On arrival in the Department, you will be assigned a primary and a subsidiary supervisor. The primary supervisor (informally: your supervisor) is the person who will be responsible for directing the course of your research and providing detailed feedbackonallstagesofyourwork.Thesubsidiarysupervisorwillnotnecessarilybea specialistinyourareaofthesubject, butwillbeavailabletoyouasapointofcontactif yourprimarysupervisorisawayonleaveorasafirstportofcallifforanyreasonyou findyourselfunableorunwillingtocommunicatewithyourprimarysupervisor. It is an important principle that all decisions affecting your academic progress within the Department are made by at least two members of staff, acting on behalf of the Department, andnotontheresponsibilityofyourprimarysupervisoralone. 3.RoleoftheGraduateStudiesCommittee This is the body within the School of Humanities to which the Departmental PARC is answerable. The Department reports annually to this Committee on the progress of students. 4.Progression Your work is monitored by theDepartments PARC twice a year, normally in January andJune.AttheJunereviewyouwillhaveaninterview(viva)withtheCommitteeso thatwecanassessyourprogress, anddeterminewhetheryouareontarget.Transferof registration from MPhil to PhD is most commonly at the ninemonths review, and transfer to writingup status at the 33months review, if students are not about to completetheirthesis. Sincestudentsbegintheirresearchatdifferenttimesoftheyear, thepatternofreviews is variable. Students who have interrupted their studies will need to check with their supervisors to confirm what they need to produce.
