Gross Economic Impact Estimates Based on the spending and income multipliers chosen on the previous slide, then: - the gross economic impact of this event upon your local community is roughly $602,622; - $386,884 accrues to local household income; - $141,616 accrues to local corporate income; - $71,109 accrues to local government; Visitor spending and the subsequent local recycling of visitor dollars induced a gross impact on local spending in the amount of $1,585,849. But after accounting for various monetary leakages that occur, only $602,622 remains in the long run as local income. In reference to the interpretation written in bold letters above, the NASC strongly encourages its members to use the exact wording above when reporting gross impact estimates to the media, its constituents, event rights holders, and the like. Calculating Net Economic Impact Estimates (accounting for Displacement) Academicians and practioners alike have realized and proven that when a community hosts a particular event and attracts non-local visitors, that event might displace (or crowd out) other would be visitors whose spending would have also impacted the community.

The significance of this is to imply that gross economic impact estimates may be too high.

So the question becomes, How much additional visitor spending was caused by some event ABOVE AND BEYOND historical norms for the weekend/time of year in question.

Though difficult to measure, a first approximation would be to compare hotel occupancy rates and room rates during the event to similar historical time periods in previous years when the event did not take place. In the case of events that take place annually, you can compare occupancy and room rates to historical data for the weeks just before or after the event in question.

In the absence of such data, the chart below calculates net economic impact estimates for various scenarios.

For example, if it is determined that the event in question yielded visitor spending that was 75% above and beyond historical norms, then you would conclude that:

- the net economic impact of the event was $451,967, based on a net increase in local spending of $1,189,386.

In reference to the interpretation written in bold letters above, the NASC strongly encourages its members to use the exact wording above when reporting net impact estimates to the media, its constituents, event rights holders, and the like.
