FHPC Foundation
A message from FHPC Foundation Board of Trustees
Do you know we have a FHPC Foundation? Well, we do. It was incorporated in 2003 as a separate entity whose sole purpose is to raise and invest money to support future programs of Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. In subsequent newsletters we will be providing more details about the foundation. The intent of these articles will be to help members of our congregation gain a good understanding of what the FHPC Foundation is and how it can help our church in the years ahead. As a starting point, the Foundation Board of Trustees wants to introduce itself to you. Jim Stewart is our Chairman. The rest of our Trustees are: Bud Fuls, John Wyman, Ben Fast, Roy Nickel and Norm Collins. This board especially wants to make sure each of you know our foundation represents a really good way for any member of our congregation to give back to her/his church. Lets look at an example: Like most organizations, churches occasionally face situations where they need money for capital improvements to their campus and/or buildings. These special projects are often awkward to fund. Dilemmas of this type have caused many colleges and churches to make heavy use of foundations. Over time, the monies in a foundation can have a very positive effect on what the organization is able to accomplish. Suffice it to say that our church has these kinds of challenges from time-to-time. And you can be assured we will have more of them in future years as our requirements change and our facilities age. While members can make direct payments to the FHPC Foundation at any time, there are several other ways you could participate. All of these ways will be described in future Newsletters. However, this month we want to highlight just one very easy and painless way any member of our congregation can help to assure the future financial health of Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. It involves a minor modification to your will that would make FHPC Foundation a beneficiary. The beauty of this approach is that the contribution wont be made until after you have entered the Church Triumphant. This means it wont be cramping your current lifestyle. Many people using this approach bequeath a percentage of their final estate value to their church foundation. Interestingly, even 4% or 5% of an estate can be a significant number. If many of us were to include FHPC Foundation in our wills at such percentage levels, the eventual cumulative impact on the future of our church would be profound. What wonderful gifts to the work of God these would be. The way our foundation is set up, you can even direct your gift to one of five different funds. These funds are explained in the Foundation Brochure, which can be picked up at the church office. In closing, your Foundation Board of Trustees asks that you give serious thought to this matter. Then we hope you will make provisions for bequeathing a part of your estate to our foundation. May God show us the way.

Mission Ministry
Part 2... Yard Cleanup
Apologies - Again! No delivery for October. For a Reason and a Season! Dear Volunteers: There will be no food delivery until January 2012 or later. No one in the FH Community Effort will be scheduled until then. Many thanks for all your devotion and hard work in this effort. It is not profitable to send trucks to AZ at this time and we are working on all the churches in the CA, NV and AZ area to create orders so we will be a delivery site again in January. We invite you to offer your energies in another ministry that will feed 32 Fountain Hills children who are deemed at risk. These children go with out food each weekend when they leave school, except for snack packs placed in their Back Packs as they go home. We are participating in this ministry with Church of the Ascension and The AZ Brain Food Center. You can sign up on their website or call the FHPC office. It would be a blessing to have committed people like you join us in this ministry. Let us know if you wish to participate or know more about getting involved. Here is a video to give you more information. http://www.azbrainfood.org/ "How we react and what the Father wants to change in us is His Plan." October 22, 2011, The FH Presbyterian GOOD DEEDS DOZEN Outreach Program, coordinated by Lisa Kern, completed the backyard cleanup project that we coordinated with the Town of Fountain Hills and MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY 2011 who rebuilt her dilapidated RV gate. The Elderly woman, Eleanor, is simply unable physically and financially to handle the upkeep. STARBUCKS donated the coffee again and Phyliss Kern donated water and Gatorade and made sure everyone was hydrated. Carman and Jimmy with 1st CLASS LANDSCAPING and MAINTENANCE trimmed palm trees and cut down the weeds and sawed out the Desert Broom plants in the back yard earlier in the week. Kevin from FOUNTAIN HILLS CONSTRUCTION CLEANUP donated his dump truck again to help make all this possible. The volunteers were all wonderful and so inspirational. A big THANK YOU to each of you!! November 13th will be our kick-off for selling and brewing Just Coffee. Available for purchase will be both regular and decaf coffee in whole bean or ground form in one pound packages. You will always be drinking this years crop, freshly roasted days before it is shipped to us. This coffee is USDA Certified Organic. The proceeds from your purchase of Just Coffee will be designated for : CARE-FH and SUPPORT OUR TROOPS.

Barnyard Bonanza
Barnyard Bonanza was a Blast! Thank you Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church!
It was thrilling to actually see strollers in the parking lot! Kids and adults squealed "eek!" in the haunted house and "aaahhhh" while petting the baby pigs, goats, chickens, the calf and even a llama in the petting zoo. About 50 pumpkins were sold with pictures taken at the fall photo station. All the girl scout cookies sold at discounted prices and the food bank's collection container was filled with non-perishable items before 5 pm. Kids had popcorn and cotton candy in between making crafts. Parents enjoyed creative homemade refreshments (like pony cupcakes) as they were serenaded with guitars, banjos and spoons while their kids waited for a pony ride. People hung out and enjoyed conversation even though the afternoon temperature was very warm. Many (if not most) of you joined in to make this a memorable gift to the community. Here are a few pictures!

Christian Formation
I just got home from attending a memorial service of another wonderful member of our Church Family. As I reflect on all those who have gone before us to our heavenly Terri Schmidt, Elder home, I think of all the wonderful things they have helped us accomplish in our church this last year. Many of those we have said good-bye to, have contributed in major ways to Christian Formation. They may not have done so in the last couple of years, but sometime in their lives. I was introduced to many after I was ordained an elder and took on my position of Christian Education Elder (now Christian Formation Elder). Many were there to encourage me as I muddled my way through, and were happy to sit and talk with me about their experiences. We are so lucky to have so many in our congregation who are so willing to help us, in Christian Formation, to grow our area of the church. Thank you to all who have so graciously given of your time and talents to our ministry. Now I will tell you what we have going on well as learn more about Mark, feel free to join us on Sunday mornings at 10:30 in the Adult Center. When we finish Mark, we are possibly going to explore another gospel.
E-Scrip
It is that time of year again when we are asking you to register (annually) your Safeway cards. You can go on line and do this yourself or you can ask Sandy Heunisch for help, she is our e-scrip angel. She also has some Fry's grocery cards for sale or you can purchase these in the office. These cards are re-loadable; this means that once you purchase one you do not have to keep buying new ones. You just go to the customer service counter or a cash register and give them money to put on the card and continue to use the one you have. By registering these cards to the Presbyterian Church, for every dollar you spend at these stores, a certain amount of money comes to back to the church.
Barnyard Bonanza
By the time this newsletter comes out we will have had our day of fun in the sun with our Barnyard Bonanza. Please see photos on page 9.
Koffee Klatch
If for some unknown reason you find yourself at a loss of something to do or you have the urge to join others in studying the bible, you might be interested in attending Koffee Klatch. They meet almost every Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM in the Adult Center. Our very own Associate Pastor, Stan Jones, leads this study. They have a very faithful group of attendees, so he is very good at leading this class. If you want to come and check it out, they are always looking for more to join in on their fun.
As I close this month I want to share with you Psalm 34:3 O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. Let us all give thanks for the changes in our church. ~Laugh Loudly~Laugh Long~Laugh Wholly~ Terri Schmidt Christian Formation Elder

FORWARD BY FAITH
The slogan above, Forward by Faith, was selected because 2012 is going to be a pivotal year for our church. We will be taking a bit more risk, financially, than we normally would. But that risk is not taken blindly. Our eyes and minds are wide open. It is being taken, because we dont have much time left to achieve the growth that will allow this church to survive over the long term. You and I know that our age demographics are working against us.
2012
Therefore, we must have faith that God will show us the way. You may have already received your pledge card in the mail. If not, it will arrive soon. Please put it in the enclosed envelope, for confidentiality, and drop it off at the church office, or place it in the offering plate during a worship service. Please make sure you have it in on or before Consecration Sunday, November 13. If you are not able to deliver your pledge personally, please mail it to the church office. We thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration. - Jerry Maples, Chairman Pledge Campaign for 2012

Music Ministry
Moving right along, those involved with our Music Ministry have more to look forward to as we reunite with those coming back to town, and to our church family. The choir loft fills more to the capacity it was built for, and almost all the bells of our 3 octave set will be rung by our fabulous Celebration Ringers. The Pearwood Recorders begin their rehearsals, and, the youth band "Committed" will be ready, since re-adjusting with new players, to be a part in our worship service once again. The Celebration Singers will be continuing in their preparation toward the presentation of Bradley Ellingboe's "Welcome To Our Wondering Sight," a beautiful Christmas Cantata to be presented in our worship service on December 18. If you're interested in joining with the Celebration Singers in presenting this beautiful work, please join now so you'll have a chance to really learn the music and feel it's expression. This delightful group of people rehearse Thursday evening's from 7-8:30 PM in the Sanctuary. You are very welcome to walk in, get a folder, sit down and sing! Wednesday evenings have given new life to the young ones that come by having a fun place to go, and new songs to sing! How fun it is for us to have youth on our campus who can learn of this safe ground on which to walk, and who are given kind attention by adults who love working with them. How fun it is to sing and dance with them for a few minutes before they split into their classes about Christian living. There has been established a new tradition by the passing of our longest participating choir member, Bob Crawford. It's the marking of a chair made empty by his absence. There was a single white rose placed on the chair, and a white stole, marking a place where Bob sat for over 25 years, quietly fulfilling his call to praise God through singing. It's amazing how such a quiet man has left such a loud absence. I will always appreciate seeing God's work made real in that of Ralph Berry driving Bob to and from rehearsal each week, and to Sunday morning worship when Bob lost his ability to drive alone. I will never forget how happy Bob would be when they'd show up for an evening rehearsal after having stopped by for a milk shake on the way. Bob would be happily drinking every last bit before we started. He will be missed. Thank you for always getting him there, Ralph. Deborah Fisher Director of Music Ministries Make me to know Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth, and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all day long. - Psalm 25: 4-5
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Bless the LORD, O my soul, And do not forget all his benefits Who forgives all your iniquity, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from the Pit, Who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, Who satisfies you with good as long as you live So that your youth is renewed like the eagles.
- Psalm 103:2-5,NRSV
The psalmists all-encompassing list is a good example of all the gifts of God we should gratefully acknowledge. Personalize this ancient prayer by pondering your own experiences of Gods forgiveness, healing, redemption, love, mercy and satisfaction of your daily needs.

Library Footnotes
A dynamite of a book has just been added to the church library: Real Christianity, written in 1797 by William Wilberforce, Member of the British Parliament. He spent almost his entire adult life in a lonely battle against the British slave trade, and finally prevailed. What a Christian! When he was but seven his father died. His mother sent him from London to be raised by her sister and her husband in the countryside. He came under the influence of Methodism and of John Newton, who had formerly captained a slave ship, but had stopped his wild career when he encountered Jesus dying on the cross for him. Williams mother was upset that this dynamic new Christianity was capturing her sons heart, so summoned him home to London. There she plied him with all the upper class amenities she could, operas, parties, important and wealthy people, etc., along with worship in the Anglican Cathedral every Sunday. He there experienced the vivid difference between cultural and real Christianity. Twenty years later he wrote this book, so clearly describing the disparity between the two. It is so relevant for our day, and our lives!! We may not know how even our own churches through the years might have fed us cultural Christianity in place of the real thing that Jesus came to give us. In Wilberforces own words: I have seen how most people totally miss the wonderful power and beauty of true biblically based Christian faith. I hope they will realize the shallow substitute for which they have settled. In every stage of life cultural Christians have devised schemes to keep themselves from dealing with the true state of their hearts. This book is our current study in Tuesday morning Koffee Klatch, as well as available in the church library. Come join us. It is really stirring us up to take a deeper look at our faith. - Stan Jones

Hospitalized? Call the church! If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from illness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a congregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and we are not aware of it. You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.
