Deer/car collisions keeping sheriffs department busy

volunteer who coordinates collection efforts in Staples, can be reached for questions or additional information at (218) 6392010.

An ambulance belonging to Tri County Hospital, Wadena, was damaged when it collided with a deer during a transport to St. Cloud on Friday evening. Colder temperatures, an active breeding season, and hunters in the woods will cause even more deer/car collisions in the weeks to come. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution. At 2:26 am, October 29, a one vehicle accident with injuries was reported on County 7, near Norris Drive. The driver, Cindy Campbell, had been taken to a nearby private residence. Cindy had been westbound on County 7 when she braked hard to avoid a deer and slid into the ditch with her 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, rolling it several times into a wooded area. A passerby noticed the fresh skid marks and investigated, finding Campbell bleeding badly and still inside her vehicle. They administered first aid and took her to a nearby residence. She was then transported by ambulance to Lakewood Hospital by the Staples Ambulance for severe lacerations to her scalp and other injuries. Alcohol was a factor in the crash and criminal charges are pending blood test results. The Todd County Sheriff s Department thanks the good Samaritans that stopped and helped the driver at the scene. On October 29, at 9:33 pm, Frank Strom, rural Bertha, reported hitting a deer with his Chevrolet truck on US 71, south of Clarissa. Stroms truck was disabled from the collision. At 7 pm, October 29, Jaken Tyrrell, rural Browerville, was north bound on 283rd Ave, approximately one half mile north of County 18, with his 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, when he struck a deer. Tyrrell was not injured. There was moderate damage to the right front corner of his truck. On October 28, at 1:45 am, Kevin Punt, Detroit Lakes, reported he hit a deer with his Suzuki Forenza on Hwy 71, south of Long Prairie. The car sustained moderate damage. At 9:21 pm, October 28, Justin Grewe reported hitting a deer on County 24, east of County 11. Grewe was not injured, his Chevrolet truck was moderately damaged on the drivers side front. On October 27, at 6:53 pm, Colton Haakinson, rural Sauk Centre, reported hitting a deer on County 2, just west of 171s Ave. Haakinson was not injured, his 2001 Ford Focus appeared to be totaled. At 8:36 pm, October 27, Jason Levin, Long Prairie, reported hitting two deer with his 2012 Chevrolet work van on County 11, one mile north of Hwy 27. The van sustained severe damage.

Disaster Assistance sign up for 2010 crop losses

Todd County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Polly Olson announced the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments (SURE) program enrollment for 2010 crop year losses begins November 14, 2011. Producers across the state experienced several natural disasters during the 2010 crop year that caused hardship and financial losses to many agricultural operations, said Olson The SURE program provides assistance to producers when disaster strikes, so I strongly encourage producers with 2010 crop losses to contact the Todd County FSA office to learn more about the program," she said. To qualify for a SURE payment, the producer's operation must be located in a county that was declared a disaster for 2010 or be contiguous to a disaster declared county and have at least a 10 percent production loss that affects one crop of economic significance. Producers with agricultural operations located outside a disaster county are eligible for SURE benefits if they had a production loss greater or equal to 50 percent of the normal production on the farm. Freeborn County received a disaster designation during 2010. Todd County was not a disaster county - BUT there were many

Peggys Potpourri
The first commercial cookie in the U.S. was the Animal Cracker, introduced in 1902. The Oreo, the best-selling cookie of the 20th century, was developed and introduced by the American company Nabisco, in 1912. The U.S. leads the world as the biggest cookie bakers and eaters, spending more than $550 million annually on Oreos alone. The top 3 selling commerical cookies in the U.S. are: 1. Nabisco Oreo; 2. Nabisco Chips Ahoy; 3. Nabisco Oreo Double Stuff Half of all home baked cookies are chocolate chip. Early American tinsmiths began making cookie cutters by hand back in the 1700s. American cookie jars evolved from British biscuit jars and first appeared on the scene during the Depression in the 1930s when housewives began making more cookies at home, rather than buying them at the bakery, and needed containers for them. The chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1930 at the Toll House Inn Restaurant in Massachusetts. Mrs. Wakefield sold her chocolate chip cookie recipe to Nestle, who began manufacturing chocolate chips in 1939. The official state cookie of both Massachusetts and Pennsylvania is the chocolate chip cookie.

Obituary

Gear up for pheasant hunting

By Scott W. Roemhildt, DNR information officer Pheasant hunting doesnt require a lot of specialized or expensive equipment, but there are some basic items that will make your time in the field more enjoyable and productive, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). LICENSE/HUNTING REGULATIONS HANDBOOK The trail to good hunting starts with a license and a state pheasant stamp. Get your handbook, license and stamp at any DNR license vendor, by phone at 888-665-4236, or online at www.mndnr.gov. MAPS Scouting an area will increase the odds of finding pheasants and good maps will help too. Go to www.mndnr.gov for free maps that identify wildlife management areas and Walk-In Access areas. Combined, these programs provide 1.3 million acres of public hunting on 1,550 parcels. A local plat book may also come in handy to identify specific pieces of land. SHOTGUN AND SHELLS Bring along a shotgun that you have practiced with and are comfortable shooting. The style or gauge of the shotgun is not nearly as important as your proficiency with it. Since pheasants are fairly tough birds, you will want to choose a heavier load such as 4 or 5 shot and limit your shooting distances to 50 yards or less. This will result in fewer wounded birds. Also, be aware that if you are hunting federal land, nontoxic shot is required. BLAZE ORANGE Minnesota pheasant hunters are required to wear at least one visible article of clothing above the waist that is blaze orange. This could be a hat, jacket or hunting vest. Remember that more blaze orange will make you more visible to other hunters. GOOD BOOTS Pheasant hunting involves lots of walking on uneven terrain. Good quality, above-the-ankle shoes or boots will provide the comfort and support you need for a day in the field. Since crossing creeks and marshy areas is common, waterproof boots are preferred by many hunters. LAYERED CLOTHING Cool fall mornings often turn into sunny, warm afternoons. Layered clothing will prepare you for a variety of weather conditions. Long sleeves and gloves will help keep you from getting scratched up when moving through tall grass, cattails or woody cover. Hunting chaps or brush pants will protect your legs and keep you dry on mornings when the grass is wet.

EYE AND EAR PROTECTION Anytime you use a firearm, you should protect your eyes and ears. A pair of sunglasses and foam ear plugs will provide basic protection. More expensive options included coated, colored, high impact lenses and digital hearing aids that enhance some sounds while protecting from loud noises. A GOOD DOG While a dog is not required to hunt pheasants, a good hunting dog will increase the number of opportunities you have to harvest birds and provide you with a companion in the field. A hunting dog is a year-round commitment. Be sure you are willing to invest significant time and energy before purchasing a dog. REFRESHMENTS After a few hours in the field, you will need to refuel. Dont forget water and snacks to keep you going through the day. Water your dog often and consider canine energy bars that are on the market. Have fun, be safe and good luck hunting!

OPINIONS
Leave the binoculars at home
cedars. I decided to hunt from the ground hoping to catch a deer coming from the hayfield heading across the creek to bed down in the timber. It was dark and the temperature was just above freezing when I jumped on the Gator and motored across the pasture as quietly as a Gator will go. I climbed the fence and made my way to my hunting spot. A nice full cedar tree about three feet tall makes a perfect blind. A person can watch a large area but between the camouflage clothing and the tree, it is difficult for anything to see the hunter. This day, I was going to take the first deer that passed by. I need deer jerky. Before it was light enough to see, something walked by on the trail. I could hear their feet rustling in the leaves about twenty yards away. That was a perfect distance. The wind was in my favor and they were using the trail. It has always been my belief, if some deer are using a trail at night, some will use the same trail during the day. Some of my opinions are not as sound as others. No other deer used that trail after it got light. A turkey called off in the distance. I got out my binoculars to check it out. I have a turkey tag, but no turkey call. If it came any closer, it would only be by random chance. There was not to be a random chance as I heard it moving away, continuing to call as it went. Through the binoculars I saw two does and three fawn picking their way through the timber on the other side of the creek. Of course they were not going to come my way. They were going into the timber to bed down before it got too hot. While I had my binoculars out and with nothing else to do, I decided to glass the opposite hillside. Within just a few minutes, a white flash of light caught my eye. Sunlight reflected off the antlers of a big buck laying under a cedar tree part way up the opposite hill. He was about three hundred yards away, watching me as I watched him. He could see the entire area around him from his cover of the small bushy cedar tree and had the wind at his back. Nothing would come anywhere near that he would not know about. It was at this point, I decided, its best to leave ones binoculars at home. Its pointless and frustrating to see everything out to three or four hundred yards when there is nothing a person can do about it.

Letters to the Editor

Local law enforcement is following the law of the land
This is in response to a letter titled My apology for public safety that was written by Dan Schilling of Long Prairie that appeared in numerous newspapers throughout the County on 10-19-2011. Mr. Schillings letter addressed issues involving the Amish Communities in Todd County. Prior to this letter, Mr. Schilling wrote two other Letters to the Editor about this same topic. The main emphasis of his letters is the fact that some of the Amish Communities do not use slow moving vehicle signs on their horse drawn buggies. There are four separate Amish Communities in Todd County. Two of the communities mark their buggies with slow moving vehicle signs and two do not. All of the communities use reflective tape on their buggies. One of the communities uses battery powered lights after dark and the other three communities use lanterns if they are operating their buggies after dark. Mr. Schilling implied that I dont feel that there is a public safety issue involving the Amish buggies. I personally met with Mr. Schilling. I did not tell him that there is not a public safety issue. I did advise him that we recently had two accidents involving Amish buggies but that in both cases, the buggies did have slow moving vehicle signs. I also advised him that in both cases, the drivers of the vehicles who hit the buggies were charged with Inattentive Driving. Both of these accident occurred during daylight hours. Mr. Schilling also stated that I do not feel that the horse crap on the road is a problem. I did not tell him that horse crap on the road is not a problem. I did advise him that mud and manure from farm implements is just as big of a problem but that very few people complain about that issue. Mr. Schillings letter stated that I was noticeably angry at him for being concerned about public safety. I did not feel that I was angry with him but I was probably not my normal jolly self after seeing the previous two letters that he had written. All three of the letters he had written have not included all of the information that I had given him. I have advised Mr. Schilling on more than one occasion that the use of slow moving vehicle signs is against the Amish religious beliefs. They believe that the bright colors of the sign and the symbol itself would put their faith in worldly symbols rather than God. I also advised Mr. Schilling that in the late 80s in Fillmore County, MN, Amish individuals were cited for not having slow moving vehicle signs on their buggies. One of those cases eventually went to the Minnesota Supreme Court in Minnesota vs. Hershberger. In that case, the Supreme Court in a unanimous ruling ruled that the Amish do not need slow moving vehicles signs on their buggies. The court ruled that there is clear separation between church and state. It was decided that the Amish do not have to use the slow moving vehicle signs. I have personally met with all of the Amish Communities in Todd County and I have expressed to them that I would appreciate it if they would use slow moving vehicle signs. Two of those communities have decided to use the signs. The other two communities appear to be opposed to the use of those signs but advised me that they would discuss the issue as a group. Once again, the Minnesota Supreme Court has ruled that the slow moving vehicle signs do not have to be used on Amish buggies. All of the communities agree to the use of reflective tape and some type of lighting after dark. Mr. Schilling also mentioned in his letter that there are 300 Amish families moving to our County and in his visit with me advised me that it was because of the lack of enforcement by Law Enforcement. In meeting with the different Amish communities, they were not aware of 300 families moving to our area. They advised me that one of the main reasons that they have located in this area is because of the lower price of land, not because of a lack of enforcement. There is not a lack of enforcement. Law Enforcement is following the law of the land put down by the Supreme Court. There are numerous hazards on our roads everyday. There are individuals riding bicycle, people out for a walk, farm implements, and Amish buggies. Drivers constantly have to watch for these hazards. The Amish are a part of our community and I respect them for their beliefs and simplistic way of life. To say that I am not concerned for public safety is ludicrous. As your Sheriff, public safety is and always will be my number one concern and it is the number one concern of every Law Enforcement Officer in Todd County. Todd County Sheriff Peter J. Mikkelson

By Walter Scott Most shots with a bow are taken at thirty yards or less. If a hunter is desperate, or spies the biggest buck they have ever seen, some people will take a shot out to forty yards. Anything beyond that is pushing ones luck to unacceptable levels. Sunday morning, I planned to hunt for just a few hours early in the morning. The weather was supposed to turn warm and the deer would quit moving. The rut is just beginning so the bucks would rather bed down during the day than fight the heat in hopes of finding a receptive doe. There is a major deer trail crossing the creek at the far end of our lake. One side has a hay field and pasture that is sprinkled with cedar trees; the other side is a fairly steep hill with some mature oaks and open places also populated with small

What I noticed when I arrived was more organization to the plaza; areas that were clearly marked such as an area for medics, media, library, donations, and food. In addition, various groups, Veterans for Peace being the most prominent that I noticed had a table set up with literature and usually one or two people at the table to visit with people as they strolled by. If you are interested in keeping up on whats happening go to the official website: http://www.occupymn.org/ for a daily schedule and more. I arrived shortly after a march of about a hundred folks wound their way through downtown Minneapolis had ended. I met up with a couple of friends at the Veterans for Peace table and enjoyed catching up with their lives and commiserating with them about the state of our state and the state of our nation. Tim and Deb are a part of the middle class that is being squeezed out of existence because we, as a nation, have allowed the corporate take-over of our government. We have not demanded campaign finance reform, we have allowed the de-regulation of Wall Street, and the nail in the coffin comes in the form of Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission; allowing corporate money to flow into our elections with no accountability, (the best government money can buy). And, of course that doesnt even touch all that is siphoning money away from us, in the form of, un-funded occupation/wars, tax cuts for the wealthy and corporate welfare via tax loopholes; there is much to be concerned about, not the least of which is the Keystone XL project that is at the forefront for environmental activists. It has been said that if the pipeline goes through it will be gameover for the environment. At 7:00 my friends and I headed over to All Nations Indian Church in Minneapolis to hear David Rovics perform. David is a troubadour for our time, he performs with a breadth and brilliance that is stunning, irreverent and serious, mastering his acoustic guitar and bringing the audience along in the best tradition of folk singers. If you are not familiar with Davids work go to his website http://davidrovics.com/ and listen to Occupy Wall Street (Were Going to Stay Right Here). If you have a trip to the cities planned stop by the Peoples Plaza, talk to the people you find there, and perhaps you will pick up a sign and march with the people, or better yet, write a letter, make a phone call and demand government of the people, by the people, for the people Retha Dooley, Sauk Centre, MN

Holiday Drive initiated

The media keeps reminding us there is hunger in our own country. Very often our mail brings solicitation letters for the same cause. Its that time of year when the Browerville Area Food Shelf calls for help with their holiday needs. The state of the economy does not seem to be improving, and with higher prices everywhere, we all have to cut corners in order to make our income go around to cover essentials. We hope our area churches, schools, organizations and individuals will again participate in our November to mid-December campaign. Monetary donations are appreciated since we have better buying power through the Food Bank. Any canned or pre packaged foot items that are NOT outdated are also welcome. If each of us do a little bit, it will help our Food Shelf make it through the winter months. Your help is very much appreciated. Donations may be left at area churches, the Food Shelf on Wednesdays, or at Browerville City Hall. May your holidays be happier knowing you have helped others. Florence Rickbeil, Browerville Area Food Shelf

Boys will face Mahnomen in Fargo

By Coach Petermeier The Browerville Tigers opened up Section 6A playoffs vs the Eagles from New York Mills. The Tiger defense was ready to play. We played the Eagles a week and a half ago so our defensive scheme was pretty fresh in our memories. We made a few adjustments from the first time we played and executed the game plan pretty well. We held the Eagles to 66 yards rushing in the first half and 6 yards passing. The second half was even better as the Tigers were able to hold the Eagles to 46 yards rushing and 4 yards passing. On offense we didn't run very many plays. We ran 18 plays in the first half but we did rush for 189 yards. The second half was even less as we only ran 12 total plays for 58 yards. Ben Dreher ran a punt back in the third quarter. Because of this we only had the ball for a total of three plays in the third quarter. Over all we played very well the entire game. Seth Kellen rushed 9 times for 114 yards and two TD's. Ben Dreher rushed 7 times for 90 yards and one TD. Ben also had two punt returns for TD's, one was for 55 yards and the other was for 45

Girls end a good season

By Coach Irsfeld Friday night the Browerville Tiger Volleyball team hosted the BerthaHewitt Bears for a sub-section match up. The Tigers ended their season as they were defeated 0-3 (21-25, 20-25, 18-25). Blocking and serve receive were definite factors in the game. We needed an effective double block up in the middle. All our front row players needed to jump with their hands completely above the net to block and attack effectively. We needed more blocks. We needed more kills. Serve receive was up and down. We just could not get it under control. The offense doesn't run smoothly if the passes aren't consistent. Aside from these struggles, there were many positives during the game. We picked up balls on coverage, ran quicks when we could, stayed home on defense, covered a majority of tips, and pushed the ball into their openings at key points in the game. Highlighted stats were Brianna Ludwig with 10 kills and 7 blocks, Megan Kruzel with 7 kills, and Katelyn Middendorf with 14 set assists. A big thank you to these volleyball players. Their time, effort, and dedication to our program is much appreciated. A special thank you to the staff, parents, and fans for all the support you give these student-athletes. Good luck to the football team! GO TIGERS!!

Volleyball
By Ashley Olson and Karina Sovich Friday night the Tiger girls hosted the Bertha-Hewitt Bears for the Tigers play-off game. Looking at this season the girls have had a pretty even match vs. the Bears. The Tigers won the first time we faced them, but the second time the Bears won. In the tournament the Tigers hosted the Bears won. Coming into this game both teams knew they could play equally. As the game progressed, the players tried their hardest, but unfortunately for the Tigers the game ended with the Bears winning. This ended the Tiger volleyball season. They had their ups and downs, but overall Karina and I think you had a wonderful season. Thank you to all the girls, it was a joy to watch you and we really enjoyed it.

yards. Both returns were set up with great blocking down field as perfect walls were set by the punt team. Trenton Wollenburg rushed 4 times for 14 yards, Makenzie Asmus rushed 3 times for 13 yards, Benton Johnson rushed 1 time for 2 yards, Adam Sutlief had 1 rush for 1 yard, Jackson Polak rushed 2 times for 1 yard, and Marcel Franek rushed 1 time for 22 yards. The Tigers rushed 29 times for 257 yards. The Tigers second round game pitted the Tigers against the Huskies from Pillager. Pillager got the ball to start and moved down the field for two first downs passing and running. The Tigers came up with two huge stops. One on third down and the next on fourth down to halt the Huskies first drive. The Tigers took the ball and went 66 yards on their first drive. An eleven play drive that was capped off by a ten yard run from Ben Dreher. We had to over come a few penalties on this drive and it really set the tone of the game from the stop on defense to overcoming penalties missed blocks. The Huskies called 4 or 5 blitzes that worked to perfection for them as our lineman didn't have their heads up and missed the blitzer. The Tigers were able to stop the Huskies again and have 6 play 44 yard drive fueled by Trenton Wollenburg's 21 yard scamper and an 11 yard reception where he was hit for a 1 yard gain but broke two tackles to gain a first down. Seth Kellen eventually scored on a one yard run. Pillager got the ball, through the air and on the ground to make it 13 - 6 Tigers. This is where the Tigers took over. The offensive line began to win the line of scrimmage and we were able to pick off the blitz and began to open holes. We were able to rush for 87 yards and two TD's in the first quarter and 194 yards and 4 TD's in the second quarter. Ben Dreher had 3 TD's and Trenton Wollenburg had one TD. Dreher's TD's went for 27, 52, and 10 yards while Wollenburgs came on a 16 yard run where he had to run over 2 players from 5 yards out to power in for his. The Tigers received the opening kick off of the second half and were on the move again but a fumble stopped the drive. That was the

last time Wollenburg and Dreher saw the field on this night. After the Huskies had one set of downs both teams emptied the benches and the second and third teams played the rest of the way. Adam Sutlief got a score as he to powered his way into the end-zone on a one yard run. In the fourth quarter Jackson Polak read the veer perfectly and scored on a 21 yard run around the end. For the game the Tigers rushed the ball 58 times for 505 yards and also had three receptions for 23 yards. On defense, other than the Huskies TD drive, the defense played very well again giving up nine yards rushing in the first quarter, 18 yards in the second, 41 yards in the third quarter and 78 yards in the fourth quarter. We did give up 93 yards passing in the game but Seth Kellen was able to intercept two passes to stop Husky drives. We, at times, were over committed to stopping the run and it cost us in passing yardage. We were able to stop them when we needed to most and get the ball back to our offense. The Tigers will now move on to face Mahnomen in Fargo on Friday at 3:00. We will have to play a perfect game if we are to move on to the state tournament. The Browerville Football team would like to congratulate and wish good luck to the Eagle Valley Football team. Good Luck at the

Football
By Ashley Olson and Karina Sovich Saturday night the Tigers hosted the Pillager Huskies for a playoff game. The boys were still pretty excited about their defeat over New York Mills on Tuesday. With their heads tuned into the game they had everything going as planned and played their hardest. The Tigers came out on top with a 56-6 win! Great job boys!! They are not headed to the Fargo Dome and will face Mahnomen. Good Luck and keep it going! At the football game Browervilles brand new Friends of Rachel Club (FOR group) worked on making a chain of kindness. What this means is students were handing out slips of paper for the crowd to write down kind acts they see around them. The students will be putting the chain together soon and hope to continue making it longer. The group would like to thank all those who participated and they hope many will continue to support the group made in honor of Rachel Scott, the first student killed at the Columbine school shooting.

Hunting safety
Nothing can ruin a hunt faster than an accident. Drowning, hypothermia, getting lost, falls from tree stands or just spraining an ankle are among the perils awaiting hunters ill prepared for a trip afield. Because hunting involves firearms, knives, and arrows and is often conducted in cold and wet weather in some the state's wildest areas, hunters should take particular care to prepare before heading out for a day in the woods or wetlands. Many hunters want to know more about how to plan their hunts to avoid accidents, injuries, and getting lost. The MN DNR has an On-line Hunter Education course that is a good reference for all hunters and its free. Just click on the following link www.hunterexam.com/ usa/minnesota/ to get the free course. It contains valuable information for hunters young
