The Faculty of Engineering, UNISEL has taken the initiative to provide general guidelines for conducting submission procedure, and writing report on engineering project. This guideline will assist students to meet the minimal format requirements set by the faculty to complete the final form of the undergraduate engineering project report. In the process of completing the undergraduate programme at the university for the award of a degree, a candidate is required to submit a project depending on the requirements of the specific programme. The outcomes related to course learning objectives of engineering project are: Students are able to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems by applying the basic principles and practices from the fundamentals. Students will be able to experience and improve system performance by applying creativity in the design of systems, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret the results. Students are able to strengthen their capability in team-working skills, undertake project planning, design implementation and management, and acquire effective project report writing and presentation skills. This engineering project guideline is prepared to ensure the project reports are easy to read by complying to a consistent format. It is important that students follow the instructions for report preparation. At the end of the semester, the student must submit their log book, project report and product/prototype which belongs to the Faculty of Engineering, UNISEL. UNIT 2 PROJECT SCHEDULE The engineering project is carried out in one semester of the students study period, which is equivalent to 14 hours per semester. The project students are required to follow the project schedule to ensure a quality project report will be completed on time, get consistent guidance from the supervisor and also to give the supervisor sufficient time to read and check students project report ensuring students follow the schedule closely. UNIT 5

ORGANIZATION OF THE PROJECT

5.1 Sequence of Chapters Students and Supervisors should ensure that the chapters follow the agreed conventions of the Engineering Project Guidelines. However, students may decide on the specific title of each chapter of the project depending upon their supervisors guide and field of expertise. Normally, the project report consists of the following chapters: 5.1.1 CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION The introduction should include a full but concise statement of: a) The background of the investigation, briefly citing the reasons governing the need for the investigation. This background should reflect the title of the project. b) The aims or objectives of the investigation. The introduction should have a flowing, natural, style of writing and should read like a story. 5.1.2 CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW The literature review should contain an in-depth review of published work relevant to your investigation. Where a large number of papers are reviewed it is useful to group them under different aspects of the investigation, i.e. to use a separate sub-section for each aspect. The important part of this section is, the reporting and discussion of the literature. It is important to distinguish what you have learnt from reading the papers from what the authors originally said. Your conclusions, on reviewing the literature, should reinforce the aims or objectives of the investigation given earlier. 5.1.3 CHAPTER THREE: METHODOLOGY The project may be one of the following natures: 1. 2. 3. 4. Theoretical Analysis Numerical Modelling Experimental Design Experimental Procedure 8
Project Coordination Unit Faculty of Engineering

Engineering Project Guidelines

Depending on the nature of the project, the approach can be described in one or more chapters. For theoretical analysis Will require presentation of relevant formulae, equations, etc., leading to the appropriate theoretical prediction(s). It is essential that all assumptions be clearly stated. For Numerical Modeling Will include information on the analysis method used, such as Finite Element Analysis or Computational Fluid Dynamics, stating version of modeling software used. For Experimental Design Precise details of items under test, and of the testing system are required. For example, sketches of circuit diagrams and/or CAD drawings are often required in this section. All equipment should be specified fully. For Experimental Procedure Concise details of the operations performed should be presented mentioning factors which are of special significance. Trivial statements however should be avoided, but, for example, where the order of performing a number of steps is considered to be important such information would be appropriate, but should be presented as concisely as possible. The purpose is to define the experimental techniques employed without ambiguity, and thus in a way which would permit a complete identical re-test. 5.1.4 CHAPTER FOUR: RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS The results section will contain a statement of what has been determined, i.e. both evaluated and observed, as a consequence of performing the test. Thus it will comprise a concise statement of the calculated results together with other important facts which have been derived or observed.

Project Coordination Unit Faculty of Engineering

Engineering Project Guidelines

The discussion section involves an assessment of the experimental results and comparison with theoretical predictions where appropriate. Sample calculations may be included to show the correlation between the theoretical and measurement results. In some cases the discussion and the results can be included into one chapter. 5.1.5 CHAPTER FIVE: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION The conclusions contain a series of unambiguous statements; each carefully crafted to make a point and usually presented as a numbered or bulleted list. These statements must correspond closely with the aims and objectives set out at the beginning of the report. It must therefore contain the answers to questions which gave rise to the formulation of the aims of the experiment. Careful reference must therefore be made to the section which specifies the aims of the test. Recommendations where appropriable may be put forward together with the conclusions.
