Young childrens emotional development can be enhanced if they are introduced to certain kinds of books. One of the main emotional benefits stories provide is the ability to communicate and share our thoughts/feelings with others. Stories provide enjoyment and encourage children to develop feelings and their imagination, allowing the child to make sense of their own experience. Their value to children is not only acting as a gateway into other worlds so the child can escape but also providing support in reflecting real life situations. Gorilla (by Anthony Browne) illustrates how some parents have busy lives and the child may feel unimportant, leading them to feel unloved and lonely, something which children may identify with. There is also a less obvious link with single parent families as the mother is not mentioned throughout the story. A child feeling vulnerable to any of these issues may read this book and identify with the character however the positive ending shows that these feelings are only temporary. The illustrations also depict the change in emotion. When Hannah is sitting at the table with her father, he is shown in a blue cold tone whereas later on when Hannah is sat at the table with the gorilla, warm red tones are used. Medwell et al (2009) states that stories provide readers with access to a vast data bank of others peoples experiences from which readers might learn as they live their own lives. The emotional benefits of books can support children in positive ways; during distressing times for example: parents splitting up or bereavement. Books can illustrate these situations and show them being dealt with or can stimulate empathy, enabling the child to identify with the characters. They can also provide a sense of hope, reassuring children that everything can be resolved. Many everyday family issues and occurrences are explored in Zoo by Anthony Browne. Browne presents a situation where parents embarrass their children, a universal theme which encourages funny story telling, sharing of thoughts and feelings. The main emotional benefit which children of different ages can connect with is empathy. A younger child might empathise with the animals who look alone and melancholy, however an older child might recognise the contrast and transition between the family and the animals in the zoo. This brings wider themes and issues into the story for the children to think about such as whether zoos are considered humane. Throughout the book the images and words compliment each other however illustrate different benefits with the pictures telling a story of their own. An older child may read the story and realise how the images vary in emotion to the words.

The ability to express emotions, empathy towards others, develop feelings of self worth and self esteem. Stories are valuable to children because they act as a gateway into other worlds. You must get children to understand and perceive books are for pleasure, as teachers we must create fun and creative environments for children to feel welcomed. Chambers (1985) stories are utmost necessary for our survival. Main emotional benefits ability to communicate, share our thoughts and feelings with others. Stories can act as an organising tool effectively organise our thoughts into a rational structure. Stories allow us to make sense of the world in which we live in. encounter them in everyday life; conversations, our memories and our future. By introducing this to children, it should help provide them with a rich experience in order to develop their understanding of the way others feel. Stories are a learning tool learning vicariously through others. Jacqueline Wilson tackle domestic issues within her writing, invites the reader in to the difficult world that the characters live in and their turmoil of their family life and home situation. Children in the class who experience similar situations are able to identify with the characters, this acts a protective shield as they are learning vicariously and an emotional connection is formed between the reader and the author. Children who do not experience such issues are able to empathise and develop an understanding. little red riding hood and cinderella aimed at young girls and survived for a long time due to their immense popularity. protect themselves from the dangers of the harsh world. Montessori (tucker 1990:pp 67) claims that introducing younger children to fairy tales are too damaging because they are too terrifying. Therefore some stories can contain too much for a reader to handle.
