Bipartisan Support in the House for Going Big on Debt Reduction November 2, 2011
Today, a bipartisan group of 100 congressmen in the House of Representatives released a letter urging the Super Committee to exceed its mandate and recommend $4 trillion in savings. The letter was signed by a nearly equal proportion of Republicans and Democrats and continues the momentum for the Go Big message. This is a huge step forward for bipartisanship in Congress and makes the road to reaching an agreement on debt reduction all the more possible, said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. Controlling our rising debt demands a bipartisan solution from both chambers of Congressand the White Houseto put a plan in place, to make it stick, and to ultimately restore confidence in the United States. And these brave lawmakers are working to do just that. The 100 congressmen who signed the letter join a growing chorus of lawmakers, business leaders, former government officials, and experts calling on the Super Committee to exceed its mandate and embrace comprehensive fiscal reform. In particular, they are joining with a bipartisan group of 45 senators echoing the same message, making this a truly bipartisan and bicameral effort. The Super Committee can now rest assured that if they are able to agree to a big package of reforms, which they so desperately need to do, theyll have unprecedented support from many of their colleagues across the political spectrum, added MacGuineas. But this isnt just a message for the members of the Super Committee themselves. It is also an urgent call to congressional leaders that Congress is ready to take up serious reforms to our entitlement programs and tax code to set the country on the right path. Momentum for a big solution just keeps growing, paving a road to success. But its up to the Super Committee and congressional leaders to capitalize on this unique opportunity.
