com account and download programmes and following a workout session to upload the key metrics of that session back to the iFit.com profile. Powered by Google Earth, the user is able to access their iFit.com on any device with a web browser and to design their own run. Once downloaded by the T14.0, the treadmill replicates the terrain to relfect the varying inclines. The console has a resting area that enables users to place a wireless laptop on top of the console and with the laptop also logged into iFit.com, the progress of the run being undertaken can be viewed on Google Earth. The Nordic Track T14.0 Treadmill is a premium range machine from the gobal fitness equipment giant Icon. The Nordic Track brand represents their higher-end products and in turn the T14.0 is close to the top of the Nordic Track treadmill range. Let's start with the basics: This treadmill is powered by a large 2.75 horsepower continuous duty motor, has a 20 inch by 60 inch running belt, a top speed of 22 kph (13.7 mph) and a maximum incline of 12%. These specifications are among the best for any machine that retails for under 1000. We found the Nordic T14.0 treadmill to be a solid and sturdy machine and the roomy running belt provides an extra sense of security when running. The running deck is cushioned using Nordic Track's "ComfortShox" cushioning system. Certainly, we can confirm that this does provide a nice feel when running on the deck and that the deck is able to absorb heel impact well. The console of this treadmill is one of the most intuitive that we've come across. On either side of the console are a set of short-cut keys which enable the speed or incline of the treadmill to be set with a single touch - perfect for those that just want to get on the treadmill, press start and then manually control their workout! The center-piece of the console is a large touch screen LCD - something that we've not seen on a treadmill at the mid-level price point! This touch screen display provides a very easy user interface for accessing all of the immense programme functinality available on this treadmill. There are 22 pre-set programmes grouped as 16 performance workouts (10 timed and 6

distance ones) and 6 weight loss workouts. Navigating throught the comprehensive range of programmes is straightforward using the touch screen and the display shows all of the important characteristics of a programme (including its speed profile in a chart) and with the proformance workouts, the intensity levels of individual programmes can be set. In addition to all the pre-set programmes, the Nordic T14.0 features a competition training facility. This type of functionality was first seen on the highly successful C2500 treadmill and proved to be a major attraction of that treadmill (now discontinued). The functionality has been upgraded and enhanced to take advantage of the T14's large, graphics capable LCD screen. Using this facility you either race against a single computer generated opponent or alternatively, a pack of virtual opponents. This feature provides motivation to runners of all fitness levels, as the the fitness levels of the virtual opponents can be set to try to match the user's fitness level! The most impressive feature of this treadmill is unlocked by inserting the optional iFit Live module into the console and registering for you iFit Live account online. With iFit Live, the Nordic Track T14.0 makes use of a home WiFi network to access your iFit.com account. At its most basic level, this enables custom programmes that are designed online to be downloaded to the treadmill and for all the exercise data from a particular session to the uploaded and stored against your profile online. However, iFit Live is a rather polished offering that is intergrated with google maps. This enables you to plot the course of a run anywhere in the world. When running a customer designed iFit Live trail, a laptop may be placed on the console of the T14.0 and the it's possible to see the actual course being run in an updating Google street view mode. The iFit Live functionality is truely impressive and brings treadmill running into the Internet age, and for those with an iPhone, there is even an app available that allows food intake to be recorded against the profile, enabling goal specific tracking on iFit.com. As expected with the premium grade treadmill, there is a Polar heart rate receiver built into the console and the Polar chest belt is included as standard. The built-in speakers are of a decent quality, though we would never rate a treadmill by the quality of speakers! The Nordic Track T12 Si Treadmill is manufactured by Icon Health & Fitness - the world's largest fitness equipment manufacturer. For the last few years, Nordic Track treadmills have been among the best selling treadmills in the UK in the mid-price segment. Let's start with the basics: This treadmill is powered by a large 3 horsepower continuous duty motor, has a 20 inch by 60 inch running belt, a top speed of 20 kph (12.5 mph) and a maximum incline of 12%. These specifications are among the best for any machine that retails for under 1000. We found the Nordic T12 treadmill to be a solid and sturdy machine and the roomy running belt provides an extra sense of security when running. The running deck features "duraslide" which enables the level of cushioning to be adjusted by sliding an orange merchanism on either side of the running deck. According to NordicTrack, this enables the level of impact absorption to be to be varied between 19% and 26% in comparison to road running. Whilst it's almost impossible to verfiy the figures stated, we can confirm that there is a noticeable difference in the level of cushioning when the sliders are at their minimum and maximum settings. We feel that this is a useful feature - specially in situations where

the treadmill will be getting used by different users with varying weights and fitness levels. The console and programme options of this treadmill are impressive to say the least! Instead of difficult to read LCD windows, there are clear and bright LED windows that provide all the critical feedback. In addition, programme feedback is provided by provided by ten LEDs indicating the training zone the user is in as well as a larger window that displays progress along a quarter mile track or the programme segments when using a programme. In addition, there are the normal incline and speed keys that one would expect from a treadmill of this price. The programmes are cleanly organised into groups: Weight Loss programmes (6 target calorie burn levels), performance workouts (6 programmes), heart rate control programmes (2) and user defined programmes (4 in total). We particularly like the simplicity of the weight loss programmes. Simply select the number press the button indicating the number of calories being targetted (choice of 250, 300, 350, 400, 500 and 600 calorie sessions), enter your weight (unless previously entered) and hit the start button! The programme then starts and a count down of the calories is displayed as the treadmill varies the intensity and speed of the belt. The presence of heart rate control is a very welcome feature and the treadmill comes with the chest belt needed to unlock this fucntionality. We are fans of heart rate control programmes as heart rate controlled training ensures exercising at the right intensity to achieve fitness goals - be they fat burning or cardio training. The console also features a little slot for iFit. This deceptively small feature of the console unlocks a whole world of personal training with the option to purchase goal specific iFit SD cards that each feature professionally designed programmes and typically provide 8 week's worth of personal trainer workouts. These programmes are accompanied by the voice of a personal trainer providing instructions and advice over the treadmill's speaker. Our only gripe with this fantastic feature is that the American accent can get a little much! Of course, all of these programmes and options are just that - options. For those that wish to just get on the treadmill and use it, full manual control is very easy and simple to use specially with the quick speed and incline keys. Heart rate can be measured without wearing a chest belt by gripping the hand pulse sensors. Though we would never rate a treadmill by the quality of speakers, it is worth nothing that the speakers built into the NordicTrack T12 Si are actually pretty decent quality! In brief: The NordicTrack T12 Si folding treadmill is a high quality, feature rich treadmill from one

of the best known names in the business. The big motor, large running deck and adjustable cushioning make this machine better value for money than pretty much every other treamill on the market at under 1000. On top of this comes the superb console with the iFit SD technology and clear LED displays. Overall, this is a very easy treadmill to recommend! Compared with the NordicTrack C2500 (an older, discontinued model that is still available from some retailers), the T12 has a larger motor, clearer display and more programmes. On the negative side, it doesn't have a fan built into the console and loses the competitor functionality. On balance, the T12 treadmill is a clear step-up from the hugely popular C2500.
